TELL CITY, Ind. - Gladys. L. Rogers, 84, of Tell City died there Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Oakwood Health Campus. The Tell City native was a member of First Baptist Church in Tell City and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Holbert Lee Rogers.

Survivors include two sons, Michael D. Rogers of Tell City and Owen L. Gordan of Evansville; a daughter, Barbara E. Wiram of Evansville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Simpson Arnold Jr. of Tell City; and a sister, Hazel Howell of Tell City.

Services are at 1 p.m. EST Saturday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in Tell City. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Baptist Church.

Elson Bon Fortune

HATFIELD, Ind. - Elson Bon Fortune, 83, of Hatfield died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Miller's Merry Manor in Rockport, Ind. The Hatfield native retired from Arkla Industries as a welder and was a member of American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Fortune; two sons, Kenny Fortune of Richland, Ind., and Lynn Fortune of Rockport; a daughter, Bonnie Kall of Newburgh, Ind.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother, Ethel Fortune of Hatfield; and a brother, Robert Fortune of Richland.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be in James Parker cemetery in Hatfield. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Evansville American Red Cross.

Zella L. East Deom

TELL CITY, Ind. - Zella L. East Deom, 88, of Tell City died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at her home. The Sulphur, Ind., native was a homemaker and former nursing assistant at Perry County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening, quilting and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Henry Earl East in 1964 and Cletus Deom in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Robert Earl East of Santa Claus, Ind.; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 10 a.m. EST Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City, Ind. Burial will be in Jefferies cemetery in Oriole, Ind. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City chapel. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Paul Catholic Church, Jefferies cemetery or Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.

Carra Wertman

DALE, Ind. - Carra Wertman, 72, of Dale died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand, Ind., from heart failure. The Spencer County, Ind., native was a Protestant, a member of Chrisney Senior Citizens, a seamstress, and she enjoyed quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Wertman, in 1997; and a son, Walter Wertman, in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Don Wertman of Dale and James Hayden of Evanston, Ind.; a brother, David Tribbie of Newburgh, Ind.; and two sisters, Linda Summers of Huntingburg, Ind., and Anna Laura Hartley of Gentryville, Ind.

Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Fuller Funeral Home and Crematory, Dale chapel. Burial will be in Dale cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles Michael Stepro
6 December 2001

CHRISNEY, Ind. - Charles Michael Stepro, infant son of Michael and Lisa Quigley Stepro died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville.

Other survivors include his grandparents, Fred and Sandra Bolin Lumpkins of Cannelton, Ind., and Chuck and Karen Quigley of Zanesville, Ohio; a brother, Ryan Fuchs of Tell City, Ind.; and two sisters, Whitney Fuchs of Tell City and Danni Jo Stepro of Chrisney.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove cemetery in Tell City. Huber Funeral Home in Tell City is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn G. Bates
26 November 2001

ROCKPORT, Ind. - Evelyn G. Bates, 84, of Rockport died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Baker's Rest Haven in Boonville, Ind. The Spencer County native was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Richland (Ind.) Order of the Eastern Star and Lincoln Hills Arts and Crafts Association. Her husband, Murray Bates, died in 1983.

Survivors include three sons, Bill Bates of Mequon, Wis., Don Bates of Monet, Mo., and David Bates of Newburgh, Ind.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Caulderine Savage of Rockport; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be in Mount Zion cemetery in Richland. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mount Zion cemetery Fund.

Connie Powers Butterfield

EVANSVILLE - Connie "Powers" Butterfield, 60, of Evansville died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at her home from cancer. She was a member of Bethel Temple and a graduate of Central High School. She owned a charter boat business and the Paris Bistro Restaurant on St. Martin Island.

Survivors include her companion, Bill Butterfield; four daughters, Tracy Kessler and Rhonda Dame, both of Newburgh, Ind., and Kelly Harger and Jama Wilson, both of Evansville; a stepson, Jim Butterfield of Evansville; three stepdaughters, Kathy Brooks of Manchester, N.H., Betsy McGarvey of Indianapolis and Sarah Budden of Portland, Ore.; 23 grandchildren; her mother, Eva Jean Powers of Hawesville; two brothers, Ron Powers of Owensboro and Wendell Powers of Hawesville; two sisters, Judy Andrews of Owensboro and Terri Bush of Hawesville; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel in Evansville. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Cancer Society or Vanderburgh County (Ind.) Right to Life.

Ralph Starnes

TELL CITY, Ind. - Ralph Starnes, 75, of Tell City died there Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Perry County (Ind.) Memorial Hospital from pneumonia. The Madison County, Ind., native was a cement mason and an Army veteran of World War II. He helped build Perry County Memorial Hospital, Tell City Twilight Towers and Beverly Healthcare Nursing Home. He was a Protestant and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Feix Starnes.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph E. Starnes of Loogootee, Ind., and James D. Starnes of Cromwell, Ind.; three grandchildren; a brother, Robert Starnes of Newport News, Va.; and a sister, Sarah Moody of Indianapolis, Ind.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Saturday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City chapel. Burial will be in St. Peter's United Church of Christ cemetery in Lamar, Ind., with military rites. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Peter's United Church of Christ or the church cemetery.

Jane W. Kellems

TELL CITY, Ind. - Jane W. Kellems, 89, of Tell City died there Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Perry County Memorial Hospital. The Cloverport native retired from General Electric in Tell City and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the church Altar Society. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 2939, American Legion Auxiliary 213 and enjoyed flowers, gardening and playing cards. She was preceded in death by a son, William Snyder.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Francis Kellems; three daughters, Mary Leisner and Betty Bryant, both of Tell City, Ruby Yoakum of Boonville, Ind.; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, Ind. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Derby, Ind. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. EST Wednesday at Huber Funeral Home in Tell City. Prayers will be said at 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. VFW memorial services are at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Mary's cemetery.

Ruth Ann Cunningham
1 December 2001

TELL CITY, Ind. - Ruth Ann Cunningham, 60, of Tell City died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County in Paoli, Ind., from a heart attack. The Tell City native was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Evanston, Ind., and had worked as an X-ray technician at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Ind. Her husband of 29 years, Arthur "Bud" Cunningham, died Dec. 26, 1998.

Survivors include a son, Carl J. Cunningham of Tell City; and a sister, Norma Marshall of Lanesville, Ind.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

Howard Phillip Cagle
4 December 2001

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - Howard Phillip Cagle, 79, of Huntingburg, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville from complications after a stroke and renal failure. The De Kalb, Ill., native retired from the railroad in Chicago at 75 and was a member of the railroad workers' and painters' unions. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 as an airplane mechanic and inspector and received seven Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He was preceded in death by two sons, Martin Cagle and Howard Cagle Jr.

Survivors include four sons, Geoffry Cagle of Virginia Beach, Va., Daniel Cagle of Huntingburg, James Cagle of Petersburg, Ind., and Raymond Cagle of Callahan, Fla.; five daughters, Alice Middleton of Rockport, Ind., Phyllis Mulligan of Gary, Ind., Patricia Rankin of Callahan, Edith Nugent of Gentryville, Fla., and Debra Kiegal of Tennyson, Ind.; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Memorial services are at 6 p.m. EST today at Fuller Funeral Home, Huntingburg Memorial chapel. The body will be cremated. Visitation is after 2 p.m. EST today at the funeral home.

Gregory L. Reisz
9 December 2001

CHRISNEY, Ind. - Gregory L. Reisz, 81, of Chrisney died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville. He was a member of St. Martins Catholic Church, Rockport American Legion Post 254 and former commander of Chrisney Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an Army 2nd Armored Division veteran of the World War II European Theater, former president of National Farmers Organization and a self-employed coal leasing consultant.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Louise Reisz; six sons, Gregory Reisz Jr. of Evansville, Stanley Reisz of Philpot, William Reisz of Huntingburg, Ind., Kevin Reisz of Jasper, Ind., Mark Reisz of Tell City, Ind., and Jonathon Reisz of Santa Claus, Ind.; five daughters, Reba Flaim of Owensboro, Madonna Reisz of Bell Buckle, Tenn., Rhonda Caldwell of Bloomington, Ind., Elizabeth Winkler of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Marian D. Renshaw of Hashbrouck Heights, N.J.; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Leonard Reisz of Owensboro; and five sisters, Sister Mary Reisz of Bardstown, Margaret Payne of Rockport, Ind., Martha Snyder of Chrisney, Joan Reisz of Owensboro and Nancy Harpenau of Tell City.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Martins Catholic Church in Centerville, Ind. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
