William Henry Dreyer
age 72; entertainer
A memorial service for William Henry Dreyer, 72, of Burnsville, N.C., formerly of Sellersburg, was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine, N.C. He died Sept. 20, 2003, after a long illness.
He was a native of Sellersburg, a graduate of Silver Creek High School and was a theater director, actor and musician. During a long and varied career, he worked as a director, a producer, an actor, a dancer, a singer, a puppeteer, an assistant costumer, a conductor, a church organist, a pianist and a teacher of general music, singing and acting.
He spent eight years working for the American Friends Service Committee.
He lived in New York City, Lambertville, N.J., Bucks County, Penn., Guatemala City, Glenside and Philadelphia, Penn., and High Point, Winston-Salem and Yancy County. He was the director of several hundred theatrical productions.
He received an Emmy Citation for a telecast of the opera "La Boheme" with Luciano Pavarotti and two Best Director Grand awards in Grand Rapids, Mich.
From 1970-75 he taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts and between 1974 and 1980 his Carolina Theater Company took touring productions into every school system and every prison in North Carolina.
From 1990 to 1996, he was the managing and artistic director of Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville.
He was active in the community everywhere he lived. Most recently, he was instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the new Celo Health Center building in Yancey County, N.C.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine, N.C., where he was also the church organist.
Owens Cooper
age 76; World War II veteran
Funeral services for Owens Cooper, 76, of Marysville, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown, with burial in State Cemetery, Marysville. He died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Salyersville, Ky., an Army veteran of World War II, a lifelong farmer and a school bus driver for more than 47 years. He was a member of New Market Christian Church, Clark County Farm Bureau and 4-H.
Survivors include his wife, the former Norma Jean Amick; three sons, Mark Cooper, Louisville and Gary and Tom Owens Cooper, Marysville; two daughters, Peggy Wolfe, Marysville and Debbie Nickles, Charlestown; a brother, W. G. Cooper Jr., Marysville; four sisters, Sarah Rose Hall, Charlestown, Phyllis Pack, Frankfort, Ky. and Janet Becker and Patty Hutsell, Louisville; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation at the funeral home will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, Monday, Oct. 13, and after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Anna Mary Elizabeth Head
age 93; of New Washington
Funeral services for Anna Mary Elizabeth Head, 93, of New Washington, were held at 10 a.m. this morning, Monday, Oct. 13, at Grayson Funeral Home, New Washington, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. She died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her home.
She was a native of Louisville and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne Head, Grapevine, Texas, Davey Head, New Washington and Carl Head Jr., Louisville; two daughters, Blanche Dennis, Mt. Washington and Janice Wenning, New Washington; 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Stines.
Visitation was held Sunday at the funeral home.
Leona Holbrook
age 90; of Charlestown
Funeral services for Leona Holbrook, 90, of Charlestown, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Everidge Funeral Home, Whitesburg, Ky., with burial in Hall Cemetery. She died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Medical Center of Southern Indiana.
She was a native of Letcher County, Ky. and a member of Thornton Old Regular Baptist Church, Thornton, Ky.
Survivors include two sons, Larry D. Holbrook, Wise, Va.;' two daughters, Rosemary Smith and Phyllis A. Holbrook Charlestown and a brothers, Raymond Hall, Spedwell, Tenn.
Visitation at Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, Oct. 13 and at Everidge Funeral Home, Whitesburg, Ky., from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
John Earl "Jack" Horn
age 85; World War II veteran
Funeral services for John Earl "Jack" Horn, 85, of Jeffersonville, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Coots Funeral Home, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. He died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Norton Hospital, Louisville.
He was a native of Jeffersonville, a retired bookeeper for C. H. Graves Quary and former employee of Urban Renewal. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Jeffersonville Optimist Club and American Legion Post 35.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Horn; two sons, John M. Horn, Alexandria, Va., and James W. Horn, Floyds Knobs; a brother, Thomas E. Horn Jr., Jeffersonville; five grandchildren, Pam Hall, Carrie Brown, Mike Horn Jr., Angela Horn and Maritza Horn and a great-grandchild, Halee Dianne Hall.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne Edwards.
Visitation at the funeral home will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.
James Michael "Mike" Kelley
age 52; of Clarksville
Funeral services for James Michael "Mike" Kelley, 52, of Clarksville, were held at 10 a.m. this morning, Monday, Oct. 13, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Clarksville, with burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery. He died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at University of Louisville Hospital.
He was a native of Clarksville, was a State Farm claims specialist and was an active instructor with the Louisville Soaring Club where he spent many weekends volunteering his help to further others love for flying. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cloud Pleasers Club and Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his mother, Mary E. Kelley; four brothers, Grant A. Kelley Jr., and Paul D. Kelley, Clarksville, Lyle T. Kelley, Jeffersonville and Ronald L. Kelley, Sellersburg; a sister, Patricia M. Leffew, Virginia Beach, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Grant A. Kelley Sr. and a niece, Heather R. Kelley.
Visitation was held Sunday at Coots Funeral Home.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Catholic Church of St. Vincent DePaul.
Irma L. Kessler
age 66; of New Albany
Funeral services for Irma L. Kessler, 66, of New Albany were held at 11 a.m. this morning, Monday, Oct. 13 at Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Oak Street Chapel, with interment at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
She was a native of New Albany, a retired nursing supervisor at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, a former captain in the United States Air Force, active in the Floyd County Humane Society and was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Visitation was held Sunday at the funeral home.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Floyd County Humane Society.
Hutie I. Moore
age 90; of New Albany
Funeral services for Hutie I. Moore, 90, of New Albany were held at 1:30 p.m. today, Monday, Oct. 13, at Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Home on Market Street, with interment at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 Central Time at the Sacramento Methodist Church Cemetery
in Kentucky. She died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at Lincoln Hills Nursing Home.
She was the former Hutie Nall of McLean County, Ky., a homemaker and member of Parkway Southern Baptist Church in New Albany.
Survivors include two grandsons, R. Doug and Brian K. Moore; three great-grandchildren, MacKenzie, Alyssa and Bryce Moore.
Visitation was after 9 a.m. this morning, Monday, Oct. 13 at the funeral home.
Mildred A. Niessen
age 89; of New Albany
Funeral services for Mildred A. Niessen, 89, of New Albany, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Chapel Hill Christian Church Cemetery. She died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 in Akron, Ohio.
She was the former Mildred A. Wells, a native of Salem and the widow of Frank H. Niessen.
Survivors include seven cousins, Virginia Scott of Galena, Shirley Brandt of Floyds Knobs, JoAnn Ollis, Lena Brown of Borden, Edgar Clark Jr. of Pekin, Betty Tipton and Margaret Eubanks, both of Florida.
There will be no visitation.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Chapel Hill Christian Church.
