James L. Hammett

age 92; jeweler

A funeral mass for James L. Hammett, 92, of Tampa, Fla., will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Holy Family Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, New Albany. He died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at his home in Tampa.

He was a native of Charlestown and a jeweler and watchmaker who owned Hammett Jewelers in Clarksville. He was a longtime resident of Clarksville moving to Tampa in 1990. He was a 1929 graduate of New Albany High School and a member of the Jeffersonville Lions and Kiwanis clubs.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Hammett; a sister, Josephine Graf of St. Joe; two grandchildren, Michelle and Steven Hammett; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Shelby Hammett and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Louise Hammett.

Mary Jean Alexander

78; retired tax accountant

Funeral services for Mary Jean Alexander, 78, of Clarksville, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Scott Funeral Home, North Chapel, with burial in Martinsburg Cemetery. She died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Westminster Healthcare Center, Clarksville.

She was a native of Middleboro, Ky., a retired self-employed tax accountant and a member of Church of Christ in Pekin and the Pilot Club.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Dean and Jesse Russell Alexander, Jeffersonville; two daughters, Diana Ruth Mull and Janetta Sue Thomas, Jeffersonville; six granddaughters, Aubrey Alexander, Stephanie and Samantha Mull, Melissa Coyle, Mimi Alexander and Christina; two grandsons, Samuel Mull and Todd Alexander; nine great-grandchildren, Todd Alexander Jr., Tierney Mull, Haley Mull, "Little Bit" Mull, Amy Buskirk, E.J. Knell, Tyler Sandafer, Katie Knell and Kristopher Alexander; a half brother, Daniel Callahan, Borden and six half sisters, Flora Childers, Sellersburg, June Trainor, Janet Wright and Brenda Jacobi, Borden, Ruth Ann Jackson, Galena and Gaye Fordice, Rushville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norval Alexander; a son Robert Alexander and parents, Foster D. and Mary Yeager Callahan.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Paul Calvin Kelley

76; a Kentucky Colonel

Funeral services for Paul Calvin Kelley, 76, of Clarksville, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Clarksville, with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, Edinburgh. He died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was a chief engineer for WKLY Radio and Television, Louisville, a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Clarksville and the Society of Broadcast Engineers. He was also a member of the Sunnyside and Jeffersonville Lions Club and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva C. Schroer, Kelley; two sons, Joseph L. Kelley, Clarksville and Thomas E. Kelley, Sellersburg; three sisters, Felecia A. Nichols, Indianapolis, Patricia S. Fehribach, Jasper and Teresa L. Taylor, Jeffersonville; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Kelley; a sister, Evelyn Newkirk and a niece, Jean Franke.

Visitation at Garr Funeral Home, Sellersburg, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rest Haven Cemetery, Edinburgh.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Anthony Building Fund.

Ruth Eleanor Strickler

83; a Baptist

Funeral services for Ruth Eleanor Strickler, 83, of Charlestown, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown, with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. She died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Medical Center of Southern Indiana.

She was a native of Chicago, Ill. and a Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Brian D. Strickler, Charlestown and Gary Strickler, Utica; two daughters, Sandra Warden and Jean Cook, Grand Haven, Mich.; a sister, Louise Cutler, Bloomingdale, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Lewis.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 29 and after 9 a.m. Friday.

Betty Jean Whitaker

76; of Clarksville

Funeral services for Betty Jean Whitaker, 76, of Clarksville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Riverview Village, Clarksivlle.

She was a native of Jeffersonville, a former resident of New Albany and the widow of Robert E. Whitaker.

Survivors include a son, Edwin "Nick" Kime, New Albany; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Bertha E. Beavin

81; of New Albany

Funeral services for Bertha E. (Bir) Beavin, 81, of New Albany, are pending. She died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at the Robert E. Lee Retirement Inn.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard "Joe" Beavin Sr.; a son, Bernard L. Beavin Jr., Champagne, Ill.; a sister, Mildred Schaefer, New Albany; two brothers, Norbert Bir, Louisville and Claude Bir, Kent, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.

Generations Funeral Home, 3309 Ballard Ln., New Albany, is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Harrison

89; of New Albany

Funeral services for Harry "Tommy" Harrison, 69, of New Albany, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann and Naville Funeral Homes, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. He died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.

He was a native of New Albany, worked for Leo B. Harrison and Son roofing, and was a retired warehouse person for Louisville Gas and Electric. He was also a member of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of The Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include his wife, Mable L. Jones Harrison; two stepsons, Darrell Robinson and Johnny Robinson, both of New Albany; a stepdaughter, Brenda Combs, Macon, Ga.; two brothers, Merle Harrison, Georgetown and Jim Harrison, New Albany; two sisters, Evelyn Dillman, Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Beverly Vannier, Louisville; eight stepgrandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Harrison; his mother, Jessie Harrison; and a brother, Larry Harrison.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the funeral home.

Anna Margaret Jones

81; Kitchen Kompact retiree

Funeral services for Anna Margaret Jones, 81, of New Albany, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, Kraft Funeral Home, 2776 Charlestown Rd., New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.

She was a native of Middlesboro, Ky., retired from Kitchen Kompact and a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church, Georgetown.

Survivors include her husband, Corbin Jones; two sons, Larry and Glenn Jones, Louisville; a daughter, Phyllis Jackson, Springhill, Fla.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 and after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Charles Richard Vest

84; Colgate Palmolive Co. retiree

Funeral services for Charles Richard Vest, 84, of Glasgow, Ky, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Coots Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. He died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at T. J. Samson Hospital, Glasgow, Ky.

He was a native of Jeffersonville, retired from Colgate Palmolive Co. and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Glasgow, Ky. He was a volunteer tax preparer for the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include a son, Michael R. Vest, Greenbrier, Tenn.; three daughters, Sharon L. Sidebottom, Cape Coral, Fla., Sandra K. Kromminga, Waldorf, Maryland and April E. Tracy, Glasgow, Ky.; two brothers, Clifford and Leon Stocksdale, Clarksville; two sisters, Bonnie Bosco, Clarksville and Marilyn Stocksdale, New Albany; two step sisters, Aileen Austin, Louisville and Elnora Snider, Clarksville; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith L. Vest and a son, Charles R. Vest Jr.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 29 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Frank R. Lantrip

78; former resident of Clarksville

Frank R. Lantrip, 78, of Dunedin, Fla., formerly of Clarksville, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Dunedin.

He was a native of Jeffersonville, a former resident of Clarksville and an Army veteran of World War II.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Clearwater, Fla.

Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Rd., Clearwater, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
