Eugene Pennington
Eugene Pennington, 75, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren, died at 2:55 p.m. Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at his home.
Mr. Pennington owned and operated Pennington Appliance Store, Marion, for 17 years. He was a member of the First Church of God, Marion, serving on the church’s board of trustees and as the treasurer. He was a member of the Christian Men’s Group and the South Marion Businessmen’s Association. He was a 1941 graduate of Marion High School. He graduated from Marion Business College in 1942.
He was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Bloomington to Joseph and Ruth Black Pennington. His marriage was Aug. 29, 1943, in Marion to Judy D. Pennington. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Connie Jean Boggs, Huntington, and Mrs. Edward (Rita) Yeager, Marion; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Marie) Carl, Leesburg, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the home’s Applegate Chapel, with Rev. Bill Fulda and Rev. John Bellante officiating. Burial will be at Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion.
Preferred memorials are to the First Church of God or Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.
Marvin E. Rich
Marvin E. Rich, 76, a former resident of Huntington and Fort Wayne, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at his home in Auburndale, Fla.
Mr. Rich retired in 1998 from Rich’s Insurance and Financial Services, which served the Huntington and Fort Wayne areas for more than 30 years. He was the owner of the former Rich’s Youth Town in Huntington and a former owner of the former Queen City Department Store in Marion from 1963-66. He was co-founder and served as chairman of the board of The Washington House in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church, Auburndale, Fla.; and was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Fort Wayne. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1941 and served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
He was born June 11, 1923, in Huntington to Willie H. Rich and Emma Beal Rich. He married Brenda “Bonia” Harris Oct. 30, 1971, in Mansfield, Ohio. His wife survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Rick (Diana) Reed, Huntington, Mrs. Joseph (Renee) Reitdorf, Winter Haven, Fla., and Holly Rushing, Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Keith Rich, Bradenton, Fla., and Nelson Rich, Huntington; a sister, Grace Shalley, Huntington; and nine grandchildren.
A son, Philip M. Rich, preceded him in death.
Calling will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr. Pastor William Douglas will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Paul P. Yordy
Paul P. Yordy, 93, died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 10, 1999) at Miller’s Merry Manor, 1500 Grant St., where he was a resident.
Mr. Yordy worked at E-Systems, Memcor Division, Huntington, for 15 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.
He was born Nov. 19, 1905, in Iroquois County, Ill., to Charles Arthur Yordy and Helen Ellen Pearsen Yordy. He married Artista K. Baker Jan. 16, 1932, in Zanesville. His wife died Aug. 21, 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Noel Yordy and Ned Yordy, both of Huntington; two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Beard, Bippus, and Natalie Yordy, Huntington; two brothers, Charles Arthur Yordy, Springhill, Fla., and Elmer V. Yordy, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Settlemeyer; and a grandchild.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 338 E. Washington St., where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Ron Covey will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Pearl Eckman Burgess
Pearl Eckman Burgess, 97, formerly of Jefferson Township, Huntington County, died at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 2, 1999) at the Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Home Inc., North Manchester.
Mrs. Burgess had formerly worked at a Presbyterian Settlement House in Detroit. She was a lay minister in the Church of the Brethren, and was a member of the Salamonie Church of the Brethren, Lancaster. She was a graduate of Manchester College, North Manchester, and Bethany Bible Seminary in Chicago.
She was born June 28, 1902, in Losantville, to Benjamin Jackson and Hannah Deardorff Jackson. Her first marriage was to Charles E. Eckman, who died in 1950. Her second marriage was to Paul Burgess, who died in 1984.
Survivors include a stepson, Charles Eckman, Fort Wayne, and two grandchildren.
Calling will be from 11 a.m. until the noon funeral service Friday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. Rev. Mark Bendes will officiate at the service.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Nettle Creek Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Gooley
Charles “Chuck” Gooley, 57, died at 1 p.m. Monday (Nov. 1, 1999) in Cuero, Texas, where he was a resident.
Mr. Cuero was a restaurant owner in Cuero and had formerly owned the Mansegar Restaurant in Bluffton. He had also been an over-the-road truck driver. He served in the Air Force during the
Korean War and was a member of American Legion Dinter Post 3 in Cuero.
He was born Feb. 12, 1942, in Huntington to Gene Gooley and Charolette Gooley. His father survives in Huntington. He married Genevieve Tam Kulik. His wife survives in Cuero.
Also surviving are a daughter, Melissa Gooley, Cuero; a sister, Alice Wiley, Huntington; and a brother, Bill Gooley, Huntington.
A brother, Dave Gooley, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Freund Funeral Home Chapel, Cuero, with Rev. Rod Tate officiating.
military graveside services were conducted at the Hillside Cemetery, Cuero, by American Legion Dinter Post 3 and Cuero VFW Post 3972.

Pearl Grandstaff
Pearl Grandstaff, 93, died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 2, 1999) at the Wabash Skilled Care Center, Wabash, where she was a resident.
Mrs. Grandstaff was a homemaker and a member of the Washington Street Wesleyan Church in Wabash.
She was born Nov. 16, 1905, in Huntington County, to Joseph Spencer and Isetta Whitesell Spencer. She married Carl Grandstaff Feb. 25, 1939, in Wabash. Her husband died March 2, 1992.
Survivors include two nephews, Charles J. Spencer and Wayne C. Spencer, both of Wabash; and a niece, Charlene Shunk, Dover, N.J.
Calling is 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel, 86 E. Main St., Wabash, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Gregory B. Fox will officiate at the services.
Burial will be at the Center Grove Cemetery, Wabash.
Charles E. Lovely Sr.
Charles E. Lovely Sr., 76, Columbia City, died at 6:23 a.m. Thursday at Miller’s Merry Manor, Huntington.
Mr. Lovely was a supervisor at Whitley Products in South Whitley, retiring in 1985. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, rising to the rank of captain.
Mr. Lovely was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Hazard, Ky., to Edward and Aggie Fletcher Lovely. He married J. Marie Howard Dec. 7, 1946, in Lawrenceburg. His wife preceded him in death March 27, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Lovely Jr. and Edward D. Lovely, both of Columbia City; a daughter, Aleda Fox, Columbia City; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Smith, Columbia City, and Wanda Arnett, Fort Wayne; and two brothers, Ronnie Lovely, South Whitley, and Howard Lovely, Columbia City.
Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Shoda-Wilkinson Funeral Home, 116 S. Line St., Columbia City. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Ross O’Dell officiating. Burial will be at the Nolt Cemetery, Whitley County.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Margaret L. McMahan
Margaret L. McMahan, 78, 4356E-1000N, Roanoke, died Friday (Oct. 29, 1999) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. McMahan was a 30-year employee of Triad-Utrad in Huntington. She was a member of the Seminary United Methodist Church in Roanoke and was a past president of the American Legion Post 160 Auxiliary in Roanoke. She was also did volunteer work for senior citizens in Roanoke.
She was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Bluffdale, Ill. She married John R. McMahan March 19, 1949. Her husband survives.
Calling will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Covington Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, Fort Wayne. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
Memorials are to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Dale W. Davis
Dale W. Davis, 70, 7708S-200W, Warren, died at 5:05 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at his home.
Mr. Davis was an electrician. He retired from Corning Glass, Bluffton, in 1985, and from General Motors in Fort Wayne, in 1995. He was also a farmer.
He was secretary of the UAW Retirees and a charter member of the Huntington North Athletic Boosters Club. He was also a deacon of the Salamonie Church of the Brethren.
He was a 1947 graduate of Jefferson Township High School and attended Purdue University.
He was born July 14, 1929 in Delaware County to Clyde W. and Edna M. Clock Davis. His marriage was Aug. 4, 1950, in Lancaster, to Marcella J. Campbell. His wife survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Gary L. Davis and Allen Davis, both of Warren, and Terry Davis, Scottsburg; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Joyce) Green, Elwood; four grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Davis, Fort Worth, Texas, and Jack A. Davis, Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Devon (Sandra) Blodgett, Goshen; a stepsister, Mrs. Phillip (Jane) Glancy, Hartford City; and a stepbrother, Ovid Lahr, Warren.
A sister, Betty Jean Davis, preceded him in death.
