Beautrice ‘Betty’ Hammel
Beautrice “Betty” Hammel, 85, 3720 Norwood Rd., died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at the Norwood Nursing Center.
Mrs. Hammel was a secretary for the Huntington County Community School Corporation for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the East State Street Church of God and the Clear Creek Extension Homemakers Club. She graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1931.
She was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Huntington to Claude A. Davis and Elizabeth Carl Davis. She married Dale T. Hammel Jan. 25, 1931, in Muncie. Her husband died Nov. 11, 1992.
Survivors include three sons, Robert D. Hammel, Bloomington, James R. Hammel, Lebanon, and William D. Hammel, Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs. John (Joy) Kennedy, Huntington; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Robert Gonser will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Beatrice C. Hicks
Beatrice C. Hicks, 56, 490 Ruth St., died Sunday morning (Oct. 24, 1999) at her home.
Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker and a national member of the Sons of Norway Organization. She graduated from Birmingham-Seaholm High School, Birmingham, Mich., in 1961.
She was born Nov. 23, 1942, in Southfield, Mich., to Newel Edward Davis and Dorothea Bennett Davis. Her mother survives in Ausable, Mich. She married Donald L. Hicks Sept. 18, 1961, in Orlando, Fla. Her husband survives.
Also surviving are a son, Michael Paul Hicks, Orlando; a sister, Mrs. Warren (Carolyn) Workman, Oscoda, Mich.; three brothers, Charles Davis, Troy, Mich., Robert Davis, Englewood, Fla., and Donald Davis, Southfield, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Bill Warax will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

M. Nadine Schumaker
M. Nadine Schumaker, 72, 2787N-035W, died at 10:18 a.m., Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Schumaker worked as a Realtor in Huntington County for 21 years, and was a dispatcher for the Huntington Police Department for nine years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Womens Auxiliary Post 2689, The American Legion Womens Auxiliary Post 7, and the Womens Huntington Moose Lodge No. 837.
Mrs. Schumaker was born on March 27, 1927 in Wabash County to Charles D. and Velma L. Gilbert. Her first marriage was April 17, 1946, to Gene B. Rudicel. He died on Aug. 6, 1980. Her second marriage was March 18, 1985, in Las Vegas, Nev., to Robert Schumaker. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, James Rudicel and Jack Rudicel, both of Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Jane Akers, Fort Wayne; and seven grandchildren.
Two brothers, Gene Gilbert and Jack Gilbert, preceded her in death.
Calling is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Ray Scribner officiating.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Wilma I. Shafer
Wilma I. Shafer, 78, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, where she had been a resident since 1997.
Mrs. Shafer was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ in Warren where she played the organ for many years. She was a member of the Latron Club, T-Timers and Grant County chorus. She graduated from Van Buren High School in 1939.
She was born April 23, 1921, in Van Buren to Charles E. Hatcher and Laura Weesner Hatcher. She married Dean A. Shafer in 1940. Her husband survives.
Also surviving are a son, Kent Shafer, Marion; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Canda) Moore, French Lick; a brother, David B. Hatcher, Texas; a sister, Berniece Wesco, Van Buren; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A son, Gary Dean Shafer, preceded her in death.
Calling was held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Applegate Chapel of the United Methodist Memorial Home, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren.
Calling was also held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 201 W. Main, Van Buren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Warren Church of Christ, 302 N. Wayne St., Warren, with Steven Leininger officiating.
Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.
Corbin Johnson
Corbin Johnson, 88, 2956N-900W, Andrews, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Johnson was employed at Essex in Andrews for 10 years and had worked at the Copper Coal Company in Weeksbury, Ky., for 35 years.
He was born Sept. 13, 1911, in Weeksbury, Ky., to Ben Johnson and Sara Ellen Johnson. He married the former Flossie Tackett on Dec. 19, 1933, in Pikeville, Ky. She died Dec. 25, 1993.
Survivors include a son, Onsby Johnson, Andrews; three brothers, Sterling Johnson, Virgie, Ky., Homer Johnson, Melvin, Ky., and Rio Johnson, Ypsilanti, Mich.; three sisters, Della Hall, Rita Little and Marie Mullins, all of Virgie, Ky.; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Estel Johnson and Ed Johnson; and two sisters, Dixie Tackett and Mary Magdalene Collins.
Calling is from 6-11 p.m. Friday and from 6 p.m. until the 7 p.m. service Saturday at the R. S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Virgie, Ky. Funeral services will also be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Ben Johnson Cemetery, Osborne Fork, Ky.

Richard C. Whitelock
Richard C. Whitelock, 88, 1942 Aspen Ave. and formerly of Lincoln Avenue, died at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at 338 E. Washington St.
Mr. Whitelock was a tool maker at General Electric in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1973. He was a member of Huntington Moose Lodge 837.
He was born March 12, 1911, in Huntington to George and Emma Calonkey Whitelock. He married the former Mary Burley on Sept. 20, 1936, in Huntington. She died Feb. 4, 1996.
Survivors include a son, Stephen Whitelock, Barrow, Alaska; a daughter, Sherry Zemen, Barrow, Alaska; a brother, John Whitelock, New Haven; a sister, Georgemma Wagner, Huntington; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was also survived by a companion, Ellie Buckingham.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Whitelock; and two sisters, Gladys McCarty and Annatta Purviance.
Calling will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Sunday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.
Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.
Barbara A. Cline
Barbara A. Cline, 59, Johnson City, Tenn., died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at her home.
Mrs. Cline was a graduate of Marion High School. She had worked at Johnson City Medical Center and later at a Johnson City restaurant before retiring. She attended Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Don Cline of Johnson City; a daughter, Susan Cline of Johnson City; three sisters, Vada Bennett of Marion, Opal White of Kokomo, and Diana Johnson of Jonesborough, Tenn.; three brothers, Douglas Abbott of Gas City, Curtis Abbott of Marion and Thomas Abbott of Muncie.
Services are 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morris-Baker South Chapel, Johnson City, with Rev. James Chatman officiating.
Calling will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Hart Funeral Home. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Star of Hope Cemetery, Huntington.

Herman L. Foughty
Herman Lloyd Foughty, 71, Ossian, died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Foughty was a printer at the Ossian Journal in Ossian for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Markle Church of Christ and served in the Army during World War II.
He was born June 23, 1928, in Huntington to Jesse Edward Foughty and Pearly Mae Elsten Foughty. He married Martha E. Jennings May 6, 1949, in Markle. His wife survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Gregory Foughty, Clifford Foughty and Curtis Foughty, all of Ossian, and Goeffrey Foughty, Markle; three daughters, Mrs. Chester (Teresa) Prater, Bluffton, Mrs. Dennis (Michelle) Qualkenbush, Shoals, and Mrs. Alan (Valerie) Killion, Washington, Ind.; two brothers, Ed Foughty of Huntington and Everett Foughty of Kokomo; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Orville Foughty and Thetus Foughty; and twin sisters, Dorothy Ellet and Velma Fordyce.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Myers Funeral Home, Markle Chapel, 415 N. Lee St., Markle, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Gerald Moreland will officiate at the service. Burial will be at the Markle Cemetery.
