Edith M. Smith
Edith M. Smith, 93, a former resident of Whitley County, died at 8:12 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at the Norwood Nursing Center, Huntington, where she had been a resident since December 1995.
Mrs. Smith began working as a secretary at the Dana Weatherhead Corp. in 1943 and retired with 25 years of service. She had formerly worked as a secretary for Columbia City attorney W. H. Kissinger. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and the Weatherhead Pioneer Club.
She was born Oct. 22, 1906, in Whitley County to Henry E. Kunberger and Emma Dial Kunberger. She graduated from Washington Center High School, Whitley County, and continued her education at International Business College where she graduated with a secretarial degree. She married Arthur D. Smith March 15, 1928. They made their first home in Smith Township, Whitley County. In 1937 they moved to Washington Township and two years later moved to Thorncreek Township. In 1957, they built a new home at Crooked Lake. Mr. Smith died June 3, 1978. Mrs. Smith moved to Goblesville in 1982.
Survivors include a son, Roy DeWitt Smith, Elyria, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Phyllis) Williams, Huntington; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nine stepgreat-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Matthew Snodderly, Mrs. Smith's grandson, will officiate.
Burial will be at the Blue River Cemetery, Thorncreek Township.

Madge L. Cone
Madge L. Cone, 98, Fort Wayne, died at 2 p.m. Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) at Lutheran Homes, Fort Wayne, where she was a resident.
Mrs. Cone taught at Riley School in Huntington for 41 years. She retired in 1964.
She was born Oct. 19, 1901, in Ohio City, Ohio, to Jacob R. and Emma Kiser Swoverland. She married Gerald Cone on Dec. 27, 1932. He died Oct. 2, 1985.
Survivors include four nieces, Mrs. Bryant (Carol) Craig, Huntington, Mrs. Robert (Judy) Young, Northwood, Ohio, Mrs. Charles (Bonnie) Smith, Inkster, Mich., and Mrs. Dill (Karen) Fauz, Phoenix, Ariz.; and a nephew, Jerry Cone, Phoenix, Ariz.
A brother, Hugh Swoverland, is deceased.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gardens of Memory Chapel, with Robert Young officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ward A. Ferrell
Ward A. Ferrell, 80, 4162S-100E, died at 8 p.m. Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Ferrell, a lifetime resident of Huntington County, was a Union Township farmer and was retired from the Pulley-Kellam Co. and Huntington Heating & Cooling. He was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church. He served in World War II from 1942-45 in the European Theatre with the 96th Signal Battalion.
He was born June 15, 1919, in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, to Levi C. and Anna Boschet Ferrell. He graduated from Union Township High School, Huntington County. He married the former Jean Harris on Dec. 25, 1942, at the Markle Church of Christ. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Ferrell, Huntington, and Roger Ferrell, Majenica; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilbert Ferrell, James Ferrell and Elmer Ferrell; and a sister, Edna Ferrell.
Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Rev. Tim Dilley officiating.
Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Velma R. McClurg
Velma R. McClurg, 88, Castle Rock, Colo., died Sunday (Feb. 13, 2000) at the Littleton Adventist Hospital, Littleton, Colo.
Mrs. McClurg and her husband Roy lived in Union City for 35 years. During that time, she managed the accounting and financial affairs of McClurg’s Stores. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, Delta Theta Tau Alumni and Tichnor Club. The McClurgs moved to LaBelle, Fla., in 1970, where they owned and operated 320 acres of orange groves. She was active in the First Christian Church in LaBelle. The McClurgs also owned a home in Manitou Springs, Colo., where they lived during the summer months. Mrs. McClurg designed and created wax figures for the Historical West Wax Museum in Manitou Springs, which she owned and operated for 20 years.
She was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Montpelier, Ohio, to Clarence and Mamie Finney. She grew up in Huntington and attended Huntington College, graduating in 1933 with a fine arts degree. She married Roy C. McClurg of Huntington County on April 28, 1935. Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Michael R. McClurg, Castle Rock, Colo.; two sisters, Roselene Vickery, Union City, and Pauline Rickert, Huntington; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A brother, Carlton Finney, also preceded her in death.
Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Fraze-Brooks & Gray Funeral Home, 432 W. Pearl St., Union City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Union City, with Rev. Roberta Hart officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Sparks Cemetery, Markle.

Ruth F. Pratt
Ruth F. Pratt, 93, a resident of Harborside Healthcare, New Haven, died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Pratt farmed with her husband. She attended Calvary Baptist Church, Oswego, and was a member of the former Roanoke Kilsoquah Home Economics Club. She had formerly resided in Roanoke and Lake Tippecanoe, Leesburg.
She was born Oct. 28, 1906, in Owens County to Roy Davis and Lillie Mae Dilley Davis. She married Leroy Pratt on May 2, 1929, in Fort Wayne. He died March 16, 1989.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Pratt, Huntington, and Wayne Pratt, Fort Wayne; a daughter, Mrs. George (Betty) Pinney, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Greenlawn Cemetery
Chapel, 6600 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne. Rev. Roderick V. Smith will officiate.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.
Preferred memorials are to the Calvary Baptist Church, Oswego.

Fern L. Salyer
Fern L. Salyer, 77, Stevens Point, Wis., died Saturday morning (Feb. 12, 2000) at St. Michael’s Hospital, Stevens Point.
Mrs. Salyer was a homemaker.
She was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Swayzee to Kenneth M. Eller and Bessie M. Berry Eller. She married David A. Salyer in the early 1950s. He died in 1964.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Salyer and Charles Salyer, both of Petersburg, Tenn.; five daughters, Betty Stambaugh, Bonnie Martin, Joyce Martin, Connie Scheid and Diane Soultz; two brothers, Norville Eller, Huntington, and Wayne Eller, Anderson and Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Gene (Ruth) Stone, Anderson, and Mrs. Wesley (Virginia) Searles, Huntington; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Stambaugh and David Salyer; and a brother, Dale Eller.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with calling two hours prior to services, at the Rybolt Funeral Home, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee. Rev. Joseph Kelly will officiate.
Burial will be at the Thrailkill Cemetery, Swayzee.
MicKenzie L. Brown
MicKenzie Lynn Brown, 3, 3581W-200N, died at 12:07 p.m. Friday (Feb. 11, 2000) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
MicKenzie was born Sept. 22, 1996, in Clovis, N.M., and had been a resident of Huntington since June 1999. She attended Gospel Community Church.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, Lee H. Brown and April M. Brown, Huntington; her mother and stepfather, Shanda Vance Youts and Kris Youts, Waco, Texas; a brother, Tyler Lee Brown, at home; two stepsisters, Natasha Christine Mikel and Jerika Lee Lamphiear, both at home; grandparents, Thomas and Sharon Brown, Salt Lake City, Susan M. Randall, Wichita, Kansas, and Kenneth and Lynn Vance, Hawkins, Texas; great-grandparents, Thomas R. and Betty L. Brown, Roswell, N.M., Stanley and Lucy Kolodzie, Falls City, Texas, Douglas Randall, Beaver Dam, Wis., and Stanley and Alice Vance, Quitman, Texas; and great-great-grandparents, Frances Corley, Carmel, Calif., and Lena Kolodzie, San Antonio.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with calling two hours prior to services, at the Gospel Community Church, 404 Grayston Ave. Rev. Elzie Spencer will officiate.
Burial will take place at a later date.

Wendell L. Diehl
Wendell L. Diehl, 79, Bluffton, died at 10 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 13, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Diehl retired from International Harvester, Fort Wayne, in 1981 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Prospect United Methodist Church, Uniondale; Masonic Lodge F&AM 145; and the Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne. He was a lifelong resident of Wells County.
He was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Bluffton to Lawrence Diehl and Goldie Graham Diehl. He married Genevieve Fahl June 21, 1941, in Uniondale. His wife survives.
Also surviving are a son, Douglas Diehl, Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Dunnuck, Markle; two sisters, Helen Johnson, Bluffton, and Mrs. Howard (Doris) Zinn, Manassas, Va.; a brother, Russell Diehl, Ossian; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Calling is 2-9 p.m. Wednesday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220E Ind.-124, Bluffton. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel with Rev. Joe Lampton officiating.
Burial will be at the Prospect Cemetery, Uniondale.
