John B. Kay

Dr. John B. Kay, 57, former chief of staff at Huntington Memorial Hospital, died Wednesday morning at the hospital.

Janet Whitacre, director of community relations at HMH, said Dr. Kay served as the hospital’s emergency room physician Tuesday night and went to the physician’s sleeping quarters for a nap. He died peacefully in his sleep, she said.

“He was filling in at the emergency room,” said Dr. R. B. Peare, Kay’s longtime partner in Family Practice Associates, 1255 Engle St. “He went in to go to sleep at 3:30 (a.m.), and he was gone when they went to wake him up at 7 a.m.”

Kay began his association at the hospital Oct. 31, 1974, and had just completed his third rotation as the hospital’s chief of staff. He first served in that position in 1974, again in 1985 and 1986, and most recently from 1997 through 1999.

His contributions to the hospital were many, and included the planning for HMH’s new campus on Huntington’s northeast side that is scheduled to open next April, said Kent McCoy, president of HMH.

“He was a major force in the development of the new hospital,” McCoy said.

Peare agreed.

“It’s a shame he won’t be able to visualize it when it’s completed,” Peare said.

McCoy said he was stunned by the suddenness of Dr. Kay’s death and that his feelings were “hard to put into words (because) ... John touched so many lives here at the hospital.

“The community lost a wonderful doctor, the family lost a really great father, and the hospital lost a real supporter,” McCoy said.

McCoy noted that Kay was one of only three doctors who still delivered babies at Huntington Memorial Hospital. “His patients just loved him, and so did we,” McCoy said.

Kay graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1967 and was certified in family practice in February 1975. He was active in the Parkview Health Systems and had been appointed to the Physicians Operations Council, a team designing the company’s management.

Peare said Kay’s fill-in service in the emergency room was typical of the man. He described him as a “workaholic,” balancing his busy practice and his work as the hospital’s chief of staff.

“He really grabbed hold of a big swath of life and tried to do everything,” Peare said.

Asked if Kay’s passing will leave a gap in the Huntington County medical community, Peare was succinct.

“You bet it will,” he said.

Kay leaves a wife, seven children, and several grandchildren.
