Paul D. Mossburg

Paul Dean Mossburg, 57, Lagro, died at 7:55 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at the Wabash Healthcare Center, Wabash.

Mr. Mossburg had worked at Celotex in Lagro. He was an Army veteran of the Vietname War and a member of the Lagro American Legion and Wabash Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 286.

He was born Oct. 28, 1942, in Elwood to Ora D. and Isabelle Williams Mossburg. His mother, Isabelle Arehart, survives and lives in Elwood.

Also surviving are two sisters, Barbara O’Banion of Columbia City and Sue Jennings of Summerfield, Fla.; and a half-brother, Dale Arehart of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home, Manchester Avenue Chapel, 1177 Manchester Ave., Wabash, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Richard Long will officiate. Burial will be at the Mossburg Cemetery in Liberty Center.

Elvie R. Nicholson

Elvie R. Nicholson, 84, Roanoke, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at his home.

Mr. Nicholson was a lifelong farmer. He was also employed for 15 years at General Electric and for 20 years as a bus driver for Southwest Allen County Schools. He also lived in Winter Haven, Fla., during the winter. He was a member of the Seminary United Methodist Church, Roanoke.

Mr. Nicholson was born Nov. 26, 1915, in Allen County. He married La Vera “Betty” Nicholson, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Lou Mertz, Roanoke; a son, Lynn Nicholson, Roanoke; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elzey and Haggard Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Seminary United Methodist Church.

Roger L. Overholser

Roger L. Overholser, 46, Columbia City, died at 12:57 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, from injuries he received in an aircraft accident several weeks ago.

Mr. Overholser was retired from Tom Kelly Buick, Fort Wayne, where he was the parts manager in the body shop. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

He was born Nov. 9, 1953, in Wolf Lake, Noble County, to Isaac Franklin and Clara Elizabeth Murphy Overholser. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1972. He married Connie Ware Aug. 4, 1973, at the Columbia City First Church of God by Rev. Hubert E. Miller. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three sisters, Shirley Ann Jeffers of Wabash, Norma Jean Keppler of Churubusco, and Sharon Mae Brundige of Goodyear, Ariz.

A sister, Helen Joan Overholser Harmon, preceded him in death.

Calling is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Pastor John Cummings will officiate. Burial will be at the Beech Grove Cemetery in Huntington County.

Preferred memorials are to the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders.

Eleanor Strahley

Eleanor Strahley, 77, Bluffton, died at 5:10 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at the Caylor-Nickel Medical Center in Bluffton.

Mrs. Strahley was the owner of the Rainbow Cafe in Markle for 35 years.

She was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Jackson, Mich., to Robert and Martha Gregor Jenkins. Her first marriage was to Robert S. Garrett in Jackson, Mich., in 1942; he died in 1953. Her second marriage to Robert L. Strahley Jan. 7, 1962, in Bluffton; he died July 16, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Robert S. Garrett of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Diane K.) Pease of Keystone; a brother, George Jenkins of Jackson, Mich.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Garrett; and two sisters, Roberta Pulling and Mavis Franks.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220 Ind.-124E, Bluffton, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. James Poling will officiate. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton.

Preferred memorials are to the Wells County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Lula Bell Tackett

Lula Bell Tackett, 75, 1047 Second St., died at 12:31 a.m. Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Tackett was a homemaker.

She was born May 11, 1925, in Floyd County, Ky., to Jarvie and Rhodina Vance Newsome. She married Troy Tackett Nov. 30, 1945, at Prestonburg, Ky. Her husband died Aug. 10, 1995.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Tackett, Huntington, Ishmell Tackett, Huntington, and James Tackett, Huntington; a daughter, Alberta Underwood, Huntington; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Anthony Newsome, Estel Newsome, Ivis Newsome, Anderson Newsome, and Bobby Jene Newsome, all of Kentucky; and a sister, Alice Johnson, Kentucky. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Deal-Robbins and Van Gilder Huntington Chapel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Steve Kohler officiating. Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery.

Ronald E. Wall

Ronald E. Wall, 63, Winchester, died at 3:33 p.m. Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at his home.

Mr. Wall worked for 29 years at Scott’s Foods in Fort Wayne. He worked for two years at Jay-Randolph Developmental Services in Winchester. He belonged to the Tri-State Tractor and Engine Assn.

Mr. Wall was born Feb. 8, 1937, in Saratoga, to Verne W. and Elizabeth Grubbs Wall.

Survivors include his stepmother, Joan Wall, Huntington; a brother, John Wall, Portland; and two sisters, Mrs. Lowell (Barbara) Landers, Winchester, and Mrs. Rob (Cindy) Wilson, Marion.

Calling will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Walker Funeral Home, 246 E. South St., Winchester. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Dr. Kenneth Rickett officiating. Additional calling will be held one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at the Reitenour Cemetery, Ridgeville.

Preferred memorials are to Jay-Randolph Developmental Services.

Warren W. Gressley

Warren W. Gressley, 79, 635 George St., died at 3 a.m. Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) at the Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

Mr. Gressley had been the quality control manager at Weyerhaeuser in Chesapeake, Va., for 28 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Pastime Monday Night Bowling League, all in Huntington, and American Legion Post 82 of Fort Wayne. He was a World War II Air Force captain and B-17 pilot. He was a former resident of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lake Gaston, N.C.

He was born May 18, 1921, in Huntington County to Walter and Lena Galbraith Gressley. He married Imogene Eckert in Huntington Jan. 15, 1944. His wife survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Ronald Gressley of Huntington, Douglas Gressley of Chesapeake, Va., and Randy Gressley and David Gressley, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; five daughters, Mrs. James (Sharon) Jamison, Mrs. David (Joyce) Rethlake and Deborah Spencer, all of Huntington, Mrs. Heath (Terri) Horton of Suffolk, Va., and Mrs. Christopher (Becky) Waltz of Newport News, Va.; three brothers, Dean Gressley of Huntington, Kenneth Gressley of Columbia City, and Jerry Gressley of Andrews; four sisters, Mary Burton of Largo, Fla., Ruth Ann Griffie of Auburn, Barbara Crist of Union City, and JoAnn Garver of Youngstown, Ohio; 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Gressley Jr.; a sister, Betty Gressley; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday, with recitation of the rosary at 5 p.m., at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with calling one hour prior to services, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Father Gary Sigler will officiate.

military graveside services and burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to St. Mary Catholic Church.

Charles Wohlford

Charles L. “Chuck” Wohlford, a retired teacher, coach and longtime Huntington County basketball buff, died Friday morning (Sept. 22, 2000) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Wohlford was the 1998 Herald-Press “Citizen of the Year” and was a driving force behind development of the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park. He served for many years as statistician for Huntington North High School athletics.

A graduate of Roanoke High School and Huntington College, Wohlford coached and taught in local schools from 1950 until his retirement in 1993.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Bailey-Love Mortuary.

Dorothy A. Brumfiel

Dorothy A. Brumfiel, 86, Van Buren, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

She worked at Appliance Manufacturing Co., Van Buren, for 10 years and retired in 1965. She was a 1932 graduate of Warren High School, a graduate of Marion Business College, a member of Dillman United Brethren Church and 50-year member of the Welcome Chapel United Brethren Church in Van Buren.

She was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Robinson, Ill., daughter of Amos and Margaret Oxley Alexander. On Nov. 23, 1941, in Converse she married Alfred Brumfiel, who survives.

Survivors also include a daughter, Patricia Jones of Huntington; a son, Philip Brumfiel of Fairfield, Ill.; a sister, Lucille Croft of Marion; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Alexander.

Calling is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ferguson Funeral Home, Van Buren, and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dillman United Brethren Church, 8888S-1100W-90, Marion. Services will be held at the church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Lynn Mefferd and Rev. John Brumfiel officiating.

Burial will be Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dillman United Brethren Church building fund.
