Catherine Ernst

Catherine R. Ernst, 95, Ocala, Fla., and formerly of Huntington, died Friday (Sept. 8, 2000) in Ocala.

She was a retired bookkeeper for the Huser Cigar Co., Huntington.

She was born April 20, 1905, in Preble to James M. and Ida Sophia Howard Ernst.

She is survived by a niece, Barbara Handy, Ocala.

Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Steven Ailes officiating.

Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

H. Raymond Miller

H. Raymond Miller, 82, Fort Wayne, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at the Marion General Hospital, Marion.

Mr. Miller had been a salesman with Bell Packaging for 51 years, retiring in 1998.

He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Huntington County to Harry and Mary Miller.

Survivors include a daughter, Janis Haviland, Fort Wayne; a sister, Virginia Glendenning, Huntington; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Miller, who died in March, 1999.

Calling is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the D. O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Rd., Fort Wayne, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be at Estates of Serenity, Marion.

Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association Northeast Indiana Region, One Canal Place, Suite 200, Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

Preston G. Smith

Preston Gage Smith was stillborn at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at Marion General Hospital.

Surviving are his parents, Todd Preston and Sarah R. Cunningham Smith, Huntington; two sisters, Shaelyn Allen, Huntington, and Jessica Rice, Andrews; his grandparents, Preston and Jean Smith, Huntington, Al and Janet Johnson, Marion, and John and Lillian Cunningham, Camp Verde, Ariz.; and his great-grandparents, Mae Smith, Huntington, Dorothy McGuire, Huntington, and Rhoda Cunningham, Camp Verde, Ariz.

Graveside services were held Friday at Grant Memorial Park in Marion. Rev. Gary Bingham officiated.

Needham-Storey Funeral Service, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Shipley

Mary E. Shipley, 85, Gas City, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at the Twin City Health Care Center in Gas City.

Mrs. Shipley had been employed at the Owens-Illinois Glass Factory, Gas City, and the Midwest Paper Company. She had also been a self-employed beautician, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, Gas City; the Grant County Humane Society; and the United States Humane Society. She was a World War II Navy veteran.

She was born Dec. 18, 1914, in Springfield, Ill., to James and Elizabeth Ratgaver Brower. She moved to Gas City in 1929. She married Alva A. Shipley, who preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1989.

Survivors include a stepddaughter, Jackie Diamond of Huntington; five stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Calling is from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Needham-Storey Funeral Service, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Robert McKee officiating. military rites and burial will be at the Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion.

Preferred memorials are to the New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 800 E. South “C” St., Gas City, IN 46933.

Edith O. Wilson

Edith O. Wilson, 88, 616 N. Market St., Andrews, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker and a member of the Andrews Wesleyan Church.

She was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Dora, Wabash County, to North and Ora Wicks Botkin. She Married Lowell E. Wilson Jan. 19, 1933, in Huntington. Her husband died June 25, 1994.

Survivors include a brother, Max Botkin of Huntington; and a nephew, Gary Lee Botkin of Andrews.

A brother, Homer Botkin, preceded her in death.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Friday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Andrews Chapel. Rev. Richard Deisler and Pastor Jerry Felts will officiate. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Andrews.

Preferred memorials are to the Andrews Wesleyan Church, 63 Madison St., Andrews, IN 46702.

George H. Thompson

George H. Thompson, 63, Lompoc, Calif., died Aug. 23, 2000, at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Mr. Thompson had been employed with the Civil Service for 40 years, retiring from Vandenberg Air Force Base as a computer engineer in 1995. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association and was the current treasurer of the Santa Barbara County Quarter Horse Association. He was a founding member and current president of the Lompoc Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) and was also a member of its sister organization, Channel City Chorus, in Santa Barbara. He had coached soccer, Little League and football for youth sports while his children were young, and had also served as an umpire and referee. He ran chains at Lompoc High School during football season. He graduated from Crane High School in Texas in 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California.

He was born Nov. 9, 1936, in Warren to Elijah and Dortha Jones Thompson. His father survives and lives in Warren. He married Nancy Creswell in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 8, 1957. His wife survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kathy Guthrie of Long Beach, Calif.; a son, John H. Thompson of Long Beach, Calif.; and a brother, Lynn Thompson of Arlington, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Atha Thompson; and a brother, Philip Thompson.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Boehmer United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Humble officiating. Burial will be at the Thompson Home Cemetery, Warren.

Preferred memorials are to the Lompoc Chapter of SPEBSQSA, 215 Pegasus Ave., Lompoc, CA 93436; or to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, PO Box 837, Santa Barbara, CA 93102.

Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn L. Hacker

Evelyn L. Hacker, 84, 460 Forks of the Wabash Way, died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 3, 2000) at the Norwood Nursing Center.

Mrs. Hacker was a member of the Majenica United Methodist Church. She had been a resident of Majenica all of her life prior to moving to Huntington in 1999.

She was born April 25, 1916, in Majenica to Joseph T. and Lena E. Abell Mills. She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1933. She married Neil B. Hacker Dec. 31, 1936, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County. Her husband survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Joe Hacker, Jack Hacker and Bob Hacker, all of Huntington; a sister, Ruth Wehr, Majenica; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Lee and Norma Snow; and three brothers, Clifford Mills, John Mills and Louie Mills.

Calling is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. Rev. Pat Mullens will officiate. Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster.

Preferred memorials are to Riley Children’s Hospital James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association, 50 S. Meridian St., Suite 500, Indianapolis, IN 46209-6378.

Glen E. Hopkins

Glen E. “Hoppy” Hopkins, 72, 1171 Elm St., died at 5 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 3, 2000) at his daughter’s home in Huntington.

Mr. Hopkins, a lifetime resident of Huntington, retired from Enyeart Construction Co., Markle, in 1998 after more than 40 years of service. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 103, Fort Wayne.

He was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Prestonburg, Ky., to William Wiley and Mary Jane Arnett Hopkins. He married Eunice N. Henemyer Aug. 9, 1964, in Fort Wayne. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Michael DeBoard Hopkins of DeMotte, and Mike Houser Hopkins and David Hopkins, both of Huntington; three daughters, Kathy Malmister of Kissimmee, Fla., and Julie Hopkins Bradley and Darlene Hopkins Geyer, both of Huntington; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky DeBoard Hopkins; nine brothers, Oscar Hopkins, William Hopkins, Silas Hopkins, Hargus Hopkins, George Hopkins, John Hopkins, Joe Hopkins, Sam Hopkins and Tom Hopkins; six sisters, Bessie Hopkins, Lessie Hopkins, Martha Bailey, Grace Hopkins, Virgie Hopkins and Alice Hopkins.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Elzie Spencer will officiate. Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.
