Flo V. Bentz

Flo VanArsdol Bentz, 95, 196 Third St., Roanoke, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday (March 17, 2001) at her daughter’s home in Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Bentz was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of Roanoke. She was a member of the Seminary United Methodist Church, Roanoke, where she was a member of the Hartford Circle and taught Sunday school for over 20 years. She was also a member of the Better Homes Club and was a Past Worthy Matron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 62, both of Roanoke, and was a member of the Shriners Widow Club of Fort Wayne.

She was born Sept. 16, 1905, in Roanoke to Newton and Dora Welch VanArsdol. She graduated from Roanoke High School in 1923 and also graduated from International Business College, Fort Wayne. She married J. Howard Bentz in Roanoke on March 30, 1927. Her husband died April 1, 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne H. Bentz, Huntington, and James L. Bentz, Springfield, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. John C. (Diann S.) Cartwright, Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Max VanArsdol and Allen VanArsdol, and two sisters, Lois Zimmerman and Bess Kline.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary and from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Seminary United Methodist Church, 202 Seminary St., Roanoke. Rev. Richard Bunnell and Rev. Martha Lyon will officiate. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Seminary United Methodist Church or the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.

Margaret E. Bryan

Margaret E. Bryan, 83, Reno, Nev., died at 12:35 a.m. Sunday (March 18, 2001) at Washoe Medical Center, Reno, Nev.

Mrs. Bryan, a former resident of Huntington, was a homemaker and had worked in the mailroom of Majestic Corp. for 20 years. She retired in 1980. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a 1935 graduate of Lancaster High School.

She was born Sept. 16, 1917, a daughter of Fred J. and Marie Shideler Sunderman. She married Russell D. Bryan Nov. 21, 1937; he died June 19, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Barrick, Reno, Nev.; a son, Michael J. Bryan, Warren; two brothers, Don Sunderman and John Sunderman, both of Huntington; four sisters, Marjorie Rohrabaugh, Vanderbilt, Mich., Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Hart and Mrs. David (Dianne) Parrett, both of Huntington, and Mrs. John (Patricia) Weeks, DeMotte; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A brother, Robert Sunderman, is deceased.

Calling hours and services are pending at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.

Richard H. Buss

Richard H. Buss, 51, 515 E. Market St., died Friday (March 16, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Buss was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

He was born Dec. 25, 1949, in St. Louis, Mo., to Henry and Grace Nowotney Buss. He married Linda Woolsey Aug. 5, 1978, in DeSota, Mo. His wife survives.

Also surviving are two sisters, Rosemary Cautzky, Des Moines, Iowa, and Joane Sommer, St. Louis, Mo.

Calling is 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at the Veterans National Cemetery, Marion. Burial will follow.

Preferred memorials are to the family, in care of Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, 338 E. Washington St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Dorothy E. Chaney

Dorothy E. Coolman Chaney, 90, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, died at the home at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday (March 14, 2001). She had been a resident of the home since 1987.

Mrs. Chaney was a 1929 graduate of Warren High School and had lived in Warren most of her life. She and her first husband purchased Albert Cole's Drug Store, located in Warren, in 1936, later changing the name to Pioneer Drug Store and Coolman's Cut Rate. The couple owned and operated the store until her husband's death in 1967; she continued to operate the store until 1977. Mrs. Chaney was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority and a former member of the Chautauqua Club.

She was born Aug. 18, 1910, in St. Louis, Mo., a daughter of Lewis Colbert and Clara Beard Colbert. Her first marriage was on May 26, 1935, in Warren to Kenneth Coolman; he died in 1967. Her second marriage was on April 7, 1990, in Warren to Joseph Chaney; he died Dec. 1, 1990.

Survivors include a son, Larry Coolman, Coshocton, Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Coolman, and a daughter, Nedra Coolman.

Calling is 6-8 p.m. Friday and 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren, where services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Charlie Dye and Rev. Howard Cress will officiate. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Warren.

Glancy Funeral Homes, Butler Chapel, Warren, is in charge of arrangements.

Shelly R. Cross

Shelly Renee Cross, 23, Kendallville, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday (March 15, 2001) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident that occurred late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

She was employed as a machine operator at Colwell Merchandising and attended Harvest Community Church in Kendallville. She graduated from East Noble High School in 1996.

She was born March 14, 1978, to James and Camille Walker Cross. Her parents survive and live in Kendallville.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Curt (Melanie) Young, Kendallville; a brother, Brandon Cross, Pensacola, Fla.; and her grandparents, Dean and Virginia Walker and Jim and Pat Hedrick, all of Huntington.

Calling will be held from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral service Sunday at the Harvest Community Church, 1011 South Town St., Kendallville. Rev. Jerry Rittenhouse and Rev. Gerald Moreland will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Preferred memorials are to the Noble County Cancer Society, in care of Hite Funeral Home, 403 S. Main, Kendallville, IN 46755.

Phyllis L. Morton

Phyllis L. Morton, 73, 36 Orchard Lane, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Morton had been employed as an office assistant in the adult education program of the Huntington County Community School Corporation. Prior to that, she had worked as an office assistant with Region Eight. She had also been employed as an accounts receivable secretary at Shuttleworth Inc., a drafting secretary for the Majestic Company, and a cook manager at Northwest Elementary School. She was a member of the Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was president of the Fidelis Circle and also taught Sunday school.

She was born June 15, 1927, in Wabash County to Lloyd and Florence Wilson Irelan. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1945. She married James Lewis Morton on Oct. 27, 1946, in Urbana. Her husband died Jan. 15, 1975.

Survivors include four sons, Robert L. Morton, James E. Morton, Dean A. Morton and David J. Morton, all of Huntington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A brother, Lorin Irelan, preceded her in death.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, 2978W-1100N. Rev. Robert Jarboe will officiate. Burial will be at the Beech Grove Cemetery, Huntington County. Preferred memorials are to the Faith Chapel Memorial Fund, 2978W-1100N, Huntington, IN 46750.

Mary E. Roberts

Mary E. Roberts, 89, Marion, died at 3:50 a.m. Friday (March 16, 2001) at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Marion.

Mrs. Roberts had been a resident of Montpelier until moving to Marion in 1976. She was the owner and operator of Roberts Flower Shop in Montpelier for 25 years and had attended the Montpelier Nazarene Church before moving to Marion where she began attending the Holiness Bible Church.

She was born Oct. 12, 1911, in Blackford County to Charles A. and Olive Blount Bedwell. She attended Goodboo School in Harrison Township, Blackford County. Her first marriage was to Ralph W. Coffield, who died in 1961. Her second marriage was to Ralph Roberts. He died in 1988.

Survivors include five sons, Robert G. Coffield, Hartford City, Raymond D. Coffield, Tabb, Va., Max F. Coffield, Jonesboro, and Ralph J. Coffield and John Roberts, both of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Mary K.) Strine, Hartford City; a brother, Charles Bedwell, Montpelier; three sisters, Helen Sharp, Montpelier, Geraldine Carnes, Largo, Fla., and Mildred Smith, Lafayette; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Treva Maddox; and three brothers, Richard Bedwell, Delmar Bedwell and Carl Bedwell.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Rev. Frank Rodgers will officiate. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678.

Opal M. Anderson

Opal M. Anderson, 94, Fort Wayne, died at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at Heritage Park Health Care, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Anderson had been employed as a drug store clerk for 20 years and at Magnavox in Fort Wayne. She was a well-known pianist in the Fort Wayne area.

She was born Feb. 3, 1907, in Huntington County to Henry and Iva Hunt Hardin.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Gilbert W. Anderson, Kokomo; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Droll, Hot Springs, Ark.

Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.

Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne. Dr. Gilbert W. Anderson will conduct the services. Calling will be one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.
