Joanna C. Merrill

Joanna Constance Merrill, 77, of Huntington and formerly of Fort Wayne, died at 7 p.m. Sunday (March 11, 2001) at Community Care Center, Huntington.

Mrs. Merrill worked 20 years as a clerk at L.S. Ayres and Co. retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Fort Wayne.

She was born May 28, 1923, in Fort Wayne to Ernest William Henry and Mildred Ferguson Kahlenbeck. She married Max Alden Merrill in Fort Wayne in 1943. Her husband died March 18, 1974.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ann Mote of Huntington and Odette Glick of Louisiana; a son, Gregory Merrill of Richmond; a sister, Betty Tracey of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Richard Kahlenbeck of Twin Lakes, Calif.; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Calling is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Elzey & Haggard Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Father Gary Sigler will officiate. Burial will be at the Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Preferred memorial is to the Huntington County Cancer Society.

Lucille N. Wilhelm

Lucille N. Wilhelm, 72, 5707 W. Maple Grove Road, died at 5 p.m. Sunday (March 11, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Wilhelm was a homemaker.

She was born May 30, 1928, in Winfield, Kan., to Ralph and Gladys Tanner. She married Rex E. Wilhelm May 30, 1972, in Huntington. Her husband survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Kingrey, Flowery Beach, Calif.; a brother, Herbert “Bill” Tanner, Springfield, Ohio; a sister, Norma Benham, Huntington; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A brother, Maynard Tanner, and a sister, Donna Tobin, preceded her in death.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel. Calling will be from noon until the time of the services Wednesday.

Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Community Care Center of Huntington in care of the funeral home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Daniel R. Clements

Daniel R. Clements, 41, Moundville, Ala., formerly of Huntington, died Thursday (March 9, 2001) at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mr. Clements was a tire builder at Uniroyal-Goodrich in Indiana and Alabama. He served in the Navy from 1981-85.

He was born Feb. 14, 1960, in Huntington to Everett and Shirley Gundy Clements. His father survives and lives in Huntertown.

Other survivors include a daughter, Danielle M. Clements, Huntington; a son, Chad D. Clements, Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Jeff (Anne) Crist, Fort Wayne; and two brothers, Samuel Clements, Huntington, and Randy Clements, Decatur.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Zackery Clements.

Calling will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hart Funeral Home. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ Cemetery. Rev. Russell Buzzard will officiate.

Preferred memorials are to the Clements Children, in care of Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Aline M. Cowan

Aline Marie Cowan, 93, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, died at the home at 6:44 a.m. Sunday (March 11, 2001).

Mrs. Cowan studied music, earning a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 1934. She taught in schools in New York, Chicago Hawaii, and West Germany, as well as in private lessons.

Mrs. Cowan worked for the establishment of the United Nations as a member of the Foreign Relations Council Speakers’ Bureau in Chicago and, in New York, as a member of the United Nations’ Speakers’ Research Committee and Speakers’ Bureau.

She had lived in the Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla., area before moving to the United Methodist Memorial Home in 1974.

She was born Aug. 3, 1907, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., a daughter of John H. Ulrich and Pauline A. Brennecke Ulrich. She married Hubert Cowan July 12, 1936; he died Jan. 22, 1968.

Calling is 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. John Wallace will officiate. Burial will be at the Cape Girardeau Memorial Park Cemetery, Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Glancy Funeral Homes, Butler Chapel, Warren, is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret L. Norwood

Margaret L. Norwood, 84, Apopka, Fla., died at 9:10 a.m. Friday (March 9, 2001) at the Florida Hospital, Apopka, Fla.

She and her husband had owned the Norwood Construction Company, where she had worked as bookkeeper and secretary. The couple had also owned the Norwood Golf Course, which they developed and operated from 1969 to 1974. She also operated the golf course restaurant.

She was a member of Central Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Floral Chapter 75, where she was a past worthy matron and had served as organist.

Mrs. Norwood had lived in Huntington until moving to Apopka, Fla., in 1994. She graduated from Rock Creek Township High School, Huntington County, in 1934 and attended nurse’s training in Marion.

She was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Rock Creek Township, Huntington County, a daughter of Emmett and Catherine Hoover Coolman. She married Donald E. Norwood Nov. 25, 1937, in Kalamazoo, Mich.; her husband died July 17, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, John E. Norwood, Huntington, and Jerry L. Norwood, Roanoke; a daughter, Barbara Nelson, Celina, Ohio; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Wilbur Norwood and Robert Norwood; a brother, Mark Coolman; and a grandson.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, with the Order of Eastern Star conducting Twilight Services at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Elva M. Smith

Elva Mae Smith, 79, 1390 Glenwood Alley, died at 11:28 a.m. Saturday (March 10, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She had lived in Pikeville, Ky., before moving to Huntington in 1971.

She was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Pike County, Kentucky, a daughter of John Henry Parsons and Ella Nicholas Parsons. She married Tremble Smith in Pikeville, Ky.; her husband died Dec. 9, 1967.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs., Roy (Joyce) Thacker, Huntington; three sons, Preston Smith, Jack Smith, and John Smith, all of Huntington; a brother, A.J. Parsons, Pikeville, Ky.; a sister, Rose Lowe, Pikeville, Ky.; 19 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ray Smith; a sister, Ollie Simpson; and a great-granddaughter.

Calling is 3-8 p.m. Monday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery.

Annabelle Snyder

Annabelle Snyder, 67, Bippus, died at 8:10 a.m. Saturday (March 10, 2001) at Whitley Memorial Hospital, Columbia City.

Mrs. Snyder had worked at GTE in Fort Wayne for a year, and then Chamberlain Products and later Pyle Industries in Huntington for 10 years. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Bippus. She was a 1950 graduate of South Whitley High School.

She was born May 5, 1933, in Merriam, Noble County, a daughter of William W. and Mabel Simpson Wilfong. She married Edward C. Snyder Nov. 10, 1951; her husband survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Thomas Snyder, Bippus, and Allen Snyder, Fort Branch; two daughters, Nancy Day of Bippus and Peggy Snyder of Mt. Etna; two brothers, Bill Wilfong of South Whitley and Charles Wilfong of Goshen; two sisters, Jewel Crume of South Whitley and Wilma Mitchell of North Webster; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Sue Snyder; a sister, Mary Mathias; two half-brothers, Carl Wilfong and Eldon Manlove; and two half-sisters, Suzella Hinton and Helen Love.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Monday at Smith and Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bippus. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Rev. Robert Hanson officiating. Burial will be at the Calvary United Methodist Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church or Huntington County Home Health Care.

Robert W. Wiley

Robert W. Wiley, a resident of South LaFontaine Street, died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday (March 8, 2001) at Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Wiley retired after 28 years as an auditor with the Mobil Oil Company. He was a 1943 graduate of Lancaster High School who served in the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in World War II. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

He was born March 23, 1925, in Lancaster Township to Roscoe and Nina L. Ulrich Wiley.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dale (Janice) Hacker, Huntington; a brother, I.H. Wiley, Warren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Foudy.

Calling is from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Hart Funeral Home, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to Hospice Home, Allen County.
