Ralph E. ‘Hoop’ Widner

Ralph E. "Hoop" Widner, 85, 427 12th St., Warren, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Markle Health Care.

Mr. Widner had been employed by the Indiana State Highway Department, retiring in 1980.

He was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Pulaski County, a son of William J. Widner and Mary E. Winters Widner.

He is survived by two sisters, Sattie Sisson, Delphi, and Mrs. Gene (Bonnie) Whittecar, LaGrange.

Five brothers and five sisters are deceased.

There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grant Memorial Park, Marion. Rev. Reece Bookout will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Markle Health Care, 170 N. Tracy St., Markle IN 46770.

Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown and Son Chapel, Warren, is in charge of arrangements.

Grace L. Yahne

Grace L. Yahne, 93, 540 Cline St., died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday (March 4, 2001) at Norwood Nursing Center.

Mrs. Yahne was a homemaker.

She was born March 31, 1907, in Huntington County, a daughter of George W. McBride and Della Randof McBride.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Meyer and Bonnie Forney, both of Huntington, Mrs. Marvin (June) Webber, Raymond, Wash., Mrs. Robert (Betty) Stahl, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Don (Nancy) Parker, New Haven; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.

A sister, Violet Goff, is deceased.

Calling is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Charles Lyman officiating. Burial will be at the Markle Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Services for Huntington County, P.O. Box 51, Huntington IN 46750.

Haskiel D. Clements

Haskiel D. Clements, 79, 8819N-200W, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday (March 2, 2001) at Norwood Nursing Center.

Mr. Clements had been employed as supervisor of shipping at Memcor in Huntington. He was a member of the Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, Goblesville, and the Andrews Lions Club. He had also served as a Boy Scout leader in Andrews. He had served in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps.

He was born July 20, 1921, in Jefferson Township, Huntington County, a son of Vernie Clements and Mary Myers Clements. He married Bette F. Vernon April 22, 1943, in Montpelier; she died Sept. 7, 1986. He married Helen M. Ebersole Sept. 25, 1991; she survives.

Additional survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Linda) Bonewitz, Andrews, and Mrs. Gary (Deborah) Trowbridge and Deana S. Clements, both of Syracuse; two stepsons, Thomas Ebersole and Erv Ebersole, both of Huntington; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer “Dutch” Clements and Herbert D. Clements.

The family will hold private calling hours. A military graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Mt. Etna Cemetery.

Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Luella J. Cork

Luella Jean Cork, 80, died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday (March 3, 2001) at her daughter’s home in Huntington.

Mrs. Cork was a beautician and had owned and operated a shop in Florida.

She was born July 23, 1920, in Union, Ill., a daughter of John Henry and Laura Gardner Cullison.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Anderson, Chicago Heights, Ill., and Mrs. Gene (Laura) Fleck, Huntington; a son, William Roberts, Ontario, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Three sisters are deceased.

There are no calling hours or services.

Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edgar D. Henderson

Edgar D. Henderson, 85, Hartford City, died at 1:40 a.m. Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Blackford County Hospital, Hartford City.

Mr. Henderson was a journalism teacher whose career spanned 44 years. He graduated from Roanoke High School in 1933 and received a bachelor’s degree from Manchester College, a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and attended graduate schools at the University of Minnesota, Texas Tech and Ball State University. He taught high school in Hartford City and Muncie and also taught at Taylor University. In 1972, while teaching at Blackford High School, he was awarded the Gold Key by Columbia University as the outstanding high school journalism advisor in the United States. He directed high school journalism workshops at Ball State, the University of Iowa, and Ohio University. He was a publications advisor for the state of Indiana and on April 27, 1979, then-Gov. Otis Bowen proclaimed that date as Ed Henderson Day in Indiana.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hartford City, where he taught Sunday school for 33 years. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi journalism honorary fraternity, Blackford County Historical Society, and was the editor of history books on Blackford County and the Citizens State Bank.

He was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Garvin, Iowa, to Rev. S.C. and Bertha Johnson Henderson. His marriage was on Aug. 29, 1945, in Hartford City, to Ruth Howard. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Mark Henderson, Chandler, Ariz., and David Henderson, San Francisco; three grandchildren; and a brother, Myron Henderson, and a sister, Phyllis Williams, both of Fort Wayne.

Calling is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 303 N. Walnut St., Hartford City. Rev. Merlyn Cox and Rev. Robert Neel will conduct the funeral service.

Burial will be at Hartford City Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to Trinity United Methodist Church, Hartford City.

Ruth E. Mooney

Ruth Elizabeth Mooney, 89, 1201 Oak St., died Friday (March 2, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Mooney had been employed for 28 years as a clerk with the R.L. Polk Co. publishers. She retired in 1982. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

She was born Nov. 20, 1911, in Richmond, Va., to Lawrence Hugh and Clara Ida Sanderlin Allen. Her marriage was in 1936, in Richmond, Va., to Melvin B. Mooney. He is deceased.

She is survived by a niece, Donna Heck, Huntington, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A son, Melvin Mooney Jr., and two bothers and five sisters — including Charlotte Daly of Huntington — preceded her in death.

Calling is from 1:30 until the funeral service scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Rev. Nancy Rosinski will conduct the service.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to Huntington Memorial Hospital’s Home Health Care.

Janetta A. Tucker

Janetta A. Tucker, 76, a resident of the Community Care Center in Wabash, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday (March 3, 2001) at the home.

Mrs. Tucker was a former resident of Andrews. She had been employed by Kitchen Maid and General Engineering, both in Andrews, and attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She was born July 11, 1924, in Pulaski County, a daughter of Anthony L. Scheffer and Clara Isabel Retebuch. She married James S. Tucker May 16, 1947, in Peru; her husband died April 6, 1995.

Surviving are a sister, Martha B. Ellet, Wabash; and two brothers, Charles G. Scheffer, Wabash, and Anthony G. Scheffer, Warsaw.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Scheffer and Herman Scheffer, and two sisters, Thresa Kern and Gertrude Brownell.

Calling is 9-11 a.m. Monday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Father Timothy A. Wrozek will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the renovation fund of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Wabash.

Herman R. Welch

Herman R. Welch, 85, 9163W-800N, died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday (March 3, 2001) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Welch was a lifelong Huntington County resident and a 1934 graduate of Roanoke High School. He served with a construction battalion of the United States Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired in 1974 from Local 103 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, where he had worked for more than 40 years.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Bippus, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, Huntington. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Huntington.

He was born April 11, 1915, in Roanoke, a son of Ernest Welch and Bessie Zion Welch. He married Josephine E. Urschel Nov. 16, 1941, in South Bend; his wife survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Richard A. Welch, Harrogate, England; three daughters, Pamela Welch, Brooks, Calif., Mrs. James (Cathy) Crews, Flint, Mich.; and Mrs. Roy (Mary) Zenor, Indianapolis; a brother, Ernest Welch, San Clemente, Calif.; a sister, Betty Nicholson, Roanoke; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Walzer and Eva Lavine.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary and from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Bippus. Services will be held at the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Larry W. Holderbaum and Rev. Norman Conklin officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, with graveside military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington County Red Cross Transportation Fund or to St. John’s United Church of Christ, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington IN 46750.
