Aaron F. Doctor

Aaron F. Doctor, 80, Fort Wayne, died at 9:05 a.m. Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Renaissance Village in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Doctor had worked at Navistar, Fort Wayne, for 40 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, and had served in the Army during World War II.

He was born March 7, 1920, in Hoagland, to Oscar and Anna Brandtmueller Doctor. He married the former Mildred R. Sponseller on Sept. 17, 1949, in Topeka, Kan. She died in 1982.

Survivors include two sons, David L. Doctor, rural Huntington, and Matthew L. Doctor, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Ruth A. Oxley and Elizabeth J. Dominey, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Clinton Doctor, Hoagland; two sisters, Julia Schultz, Fort Wayne, and Doris Rathert, Ohio City, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Sue Doctor, and two sisters, Vesta Lee and Selma Hans.

Calling is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Rd., Fort Wayne. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 2320 Broadway, Fort Wayne. Rev. Albert Keller will officiate. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Preferred memorials are to Village of the Woods, 5610 Noll Ave., Fort Wayne IN 46807.

Alice D. Wilt

Alice D. Wilt, 64, a resident of the Community Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville, Ill., died at the home Thursday morning (March 1, 2001). She had lived in Naperville since 1998.

She was a graduate of Clear Creek High School, Huntington County, and had worked as a bookkeeper for several companies in Fort Wayne. She was a member of the International Church of Christ.

Mrs. Wilt was born Sept. 16, 1936, in Tunker, a daughter of George and Naomi Rodocker Davenriner.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lance (Brenda) Johnston, Wheaton, Ill.; a son, Rodney Wilt, Fort Wayne; three brothers, Donald Davenriner of Warren, Mark Davenriner of Fort Wayne, and Larry Davenriner of Markle; a sister, Annette Lund of Markle; and five grandchildren.

Calling is from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Markle Church of Christ, where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. with Gerald Moreland officiating. Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the International Church of Christ Hope Project.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, is in charge of arrangements.

Leo D. ‘Peck’ Freed

Leo D. “Peck” Freed, 80, 2019 Riverside Dr., died at 10:55 a.m. Monday (Feb. 26, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Freed was retired from General Electric, Fort Wayne, where he had worked for 41 years. He was a member of the East State Street Church of God and a life member of the National Rifle Association. He attended Huntington High School and had lived in Huntington most of his life.

He was born April 8, 1920, in Bushnell, Neb., to Joseph H. Freed and Elsie Fordyce Freed. His first marriage was on Aug. 18, 1939, in Huntington, to Kathryn O. Miller, who preceded him in death. His second marriage was on Nov. 10, 1974, in Huntington, to Wanda Smith Scudder, who survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Janet) Gish, Huntington, and Starre Roth, Mt. Vernon, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Hector (Leota) Francar, Manitowac, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Freed, Gerald Freed, and Hubert Freed, and a half-brother, Charles Crosser.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the East State Street Church of God. Services will be held at the church at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Stephen Stull officiating. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Lura C. ‘Mandy’ Homier

Lura C. “Mandy” Homier, 75, 5028N-313W, died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Homier and her husband Charles were the owners of Homier Furniture and Auction, which they founded in 1958. She showed Great Danes for many years.

She was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Zanesville, to Royal "Dale" and Stella Nicholson Williams. She married Charles F. Homier Sr. June 19, 1944, in Huntington; he died in January 1986. Her second marriage was on March 12, 1987, in Huntington to Emmet J. Homier; he died in August 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Chuck Homier and Ron Homier, both of Huntington; a sister, Betty Elliot of Tucson, Ariz.; and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon Rose Homier.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Rev. Steven Ailes will officiate. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington County Humane Society in care of the Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington IN 46750.

Oliver ‘Bud’ Wade Jr.

Oliver "Bud" Wade Jr., 75, Lakeville, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001).

Mr. Wade was an educator for 36 years, beginning his career in 1950 as a teacher in Butler. He spent most of his career in the South Bend Community School Corporation as a teacher, principal, and reading specialist. He retired in 1987 after being chosen National Teacher of the Year in 1986.

He was a co-founder of the St. Joseph County Reading Association and a charter member and eight-year state board member of the International Reading Association. He was a volunteer with St. Paul's Retirement Community, St. Joseph Mental Health Association, Catholic Social Services, Family and Children's Center, PTA, and Scouts.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Manchester College in 1950, a master's degree in administration from Indiana University in 1957, and a degree as a reading specialist in 1983.

Mr. Wade was born July 5, 1925, in Andrews, the son of Oliver Wade and Nina Price Wade. His marriage was in August 1981 to Judith O’Donnell Pozzi. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sandra Hoff and Carolyn "Carrie" Wade, both of South Bend; a son, Oliver "Ollie" Wade, Mishawaka; two stepdaughters, Michele Gee of Plymouth and Laurie Hesch of Granger; a stepson, Mark Pozzi of Elkhart; two sisters, Jean Ulrey of Evansville and Patricia Eckert of Andrews; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and four stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Wade, Earl Wade, Lawrence Wade, and Morris Wade; a sister, Clara Gallaspie; and a grandson.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 803 W. Bike St., Bremen.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Dominic Parish Building Fund or St. Joseph County Hospice, 11 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend.

Donald C. Forney

Donald C. Forney, 74, 646 W. Lamont Rd., died at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Forney was the owner and operator of Don’s Truck Stop, Warren. He had also owned and operated the Sulky Restaurant and later Don’s Novelty Shop. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Amity Lodge 483 F. and A.M., Shrine Mizpah, Fort Wayne Valley Scottish Rite, and Moose Lodge 837. He was also a member of American Legion Post 85, where he served as past commander, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Middletown, to Kenneth C. and Marjorie L. Walling Forney. He married Bonnie Young on Dec. 7, 1962. His wife survives.

Also surviving are a son, Kenneth Forney, Warren; two daughters, Vicki McElhaney, Huntington, and Linda Quayle, Arizona; a sister, Pat Sparks, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, with Masonic services at 8 p.m., at the Hart Funeral Home. Calling will also be held from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Shriners Hospital, c/o Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Emma L. Cole

Emma Louise Cole, 74, died at 12:50 p.m. Monday (Feb. 26, 2001) at the Markle Health Care Center, Markle, where she had been a resident.

Mrs. Cole retired from Sheller Globe in Montpelier. She was a member of the Markle Church of Christ, the Moyer-Pooler American Legion Post in Hartford City, and the Moose Lodge in Florida. She had lived most of her life in the Dunkirk and Blackford County areas in Indiana, with the exception of 16 years she and her husband spent in Florida.

She was born March 1, 1926, in Dunkirk, to Emmett L. and Edna B. Pettyjohn Wise. She married Fred L. Cole April 24, 1948, in Dunkirk. Her husband died May 7, 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Rick G. Wise, Hartford City, and Michael R. Cole, Sullivan; a brother, Charles Wise, Winterhaven, Fla.; two sisters, Ruby Updike, Warsaw, and Violet Vored, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dreama Collins, who died April 16, 1989; a son, Vernon Cole, who died as an infant in 1950; a brother, Olney “Bud” Wise, who died in 2000; and a sister, Thelma Cox, who died in 1998.

Calling will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Thursday at the Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City. Burial will be at the Hartford City Cemetery.

Memorials are to the donor’s choice, in care of the Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City, IN 47348.

Stanley E. Law

Stanley E. Law, 89, died at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) at Covington Manor in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Law had worked in the Engineering Department at International Harvester, Fort Wayne, for 32 years, retiring in 1970. He was also a farmer in Jackson Township, Huntington County, and was a former Jackson Township trustee.

He was born May 29, 1911 in Fort Wayne to Ernest and Effie Cortelyou Law. He graduated from Roanoke High School in 1929. He married Hildreth Simon on Nov. 30, 1933, at the Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church in Roanoke. His wife survives.

Also surviving are five sons, Don Law, Nashville, Ind., Kenneth Law, Roanoke, Wendell Law, Stillwater, Minn., and Dale Law and Michael Law, both of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. DeMore (Mary J.) Doster, Fort Wayne; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, 880E-1100N, Roanoke. Pastor Steve Fritchman will officiate. Burial will be at the Pleasant Chapel Cemetery, Roanoke.

Preferred memorials are to the Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.
