Edna J. Yocum

Edna J. Yocum, 70, 722 N. Wayne St., Warren, died at 3 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at the Markle Health Care Center, Markle.

Mrs. Yocum had been a cook at Morrison’s Restaurant in Warren for many years. She was a member of the Warren Church of Christ. She entered the Markle Health Care Center two months ago.

She was born April 27, 1930, in Indiana to Jessie Edward and Goldie A. Perry Dalrymple. She was a graduate of Warren High School. She married Loren “Bud” Yocum in Bippus on Oct. 30, 1950. Her husband died Jan. 18, 1990.

Survivors include three brothers, Russell Dalrymple, Warren, Herbert Dalrymple, Middletown, Ohio, and Elijah Dalrymple, Winter Haven, Fla.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Dalrymple and Verlin Dalrymple, and a sister, Lucile Harris.

There will be no calling hours or services. Burial will be at Red Men Cemetery, Warren, at a later date.

Preferred memorials are to the Church of Christ, 302 N. Wayne St., Warren, IN 46792.

The Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren, is in charge of arrangements.

Martha J. Fruit

Martha J. Fruit, 99, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Shore Acres Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.

She had been a resident of Florida for the past 30 years and had previously lived in the North Manchester and Ligonier areas. She was a graduate of Manchester College and taught elementary school for 35 years. She was a member of the Congregational Christian Church and Ivy Chapter 69 Order of the Eastern Star, both of North Manchester.

She was born Feb. 24, 1901 in Wabash County to Charles and Ella Hedrick Garrison.

She is survived by a foster son, Russell Coppes, of Danville, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews, including Carolyn Quinn, of Huntington.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

There will be no calling. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fairview Cemetery, Servia, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating.

Preferred memorials are to the Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester, c/o Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, IN 46962.

Ray Smith

Ray Smith, 54, 248 Beard St., died at 12:25 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001) at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Smith was employed as a truck driver for the Huntington County Highway Department.

He was born March 5, 1946 in Pikeville, Ky., to Tremble and Elva Mae Parsons Smith. His mother survives and lives in Huntington.

Also surviving are three sons, Darold Duane Smith and Kenneth Ray Smith, both of Huntington, and Timmy Ray Craft, Kentucky; two daughters, Karianne Sparks, Huntington, and Tammy Craft, Kentucky; three brothers, Preston Smith, John Smith and Jack Smith, all of Huntington; a sister, Joyce Thacker, Huntington; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Calling is from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Elzie Spencer will officiate.

Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Richard E. ‘Gene’ Wells

Richard E. “Gene” Wells, 70, of Bluffton, died at 2:15 a.m. Friday (Feb. 16, 2001) at the Caylor-Nickel Hospital in Bluffton.

Mr. Wells was a carpenter and member of Carpenter Union 234. He was a member of Reifsburg United Methodist Church, Reisburg, and American Legion Post 111, Bluffton. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1948-53.

He was born Aug. 24, 1930 in Salem to Estill and Sallie Witt Wells. He married Jane A. Thomas in Decatur on May 27, 1989. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Donald W. Wells, Bluffton; two daughters, Mrs. James (Donna) Rogers, North Manchester, and Mrs. James (Connie) Barron, Buchanan, Tenn.; a stepson, Thomas Carnall, Preble; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Niel (Meleta) Brown, Decatur; a brother, Jay Wells, Ore City, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Herbert (Mildred) Moores, Cleves, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Ted; and a stepdaughter, Sydonna.

Calling is 6-8 p.m. Sunday and from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel, Bluffton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dewey Zent officiating.

Graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 111 at Gearnand Cemetery, Wells County.

Herbert G. Small

Herbert G. Small, 86, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, 1500 Grant St., died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001) at Miller’s Merry Manor.

Mr. Small had been employed at General Engineering, Andrews. He served in the U.S. Army with the 11th Infantry. He was a member of Andrews Christian Church.

He was born Feb. 4, 1915, in Andrews to James and India Alice Ross Small.

Survivors include two brothers, William Martin Small, Tucson, Ariz., and Russell E. Small, Huntington; and a sister, Mrs. Rex (Mary) Smuts, Houston.

Four brothers, Phillip Small, Dean Small, Edwin Small and James Robert Small, preceded in death.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Riverside Cemetery, with Bill Warax officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Bailey-Love Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Brodrick

Dorothy Brodrick, 94, formerly of 1063 Byron St., died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2001) at St. Anne Home, Fort Wayne, where she was a resident.

She had worked as a secretary for Our Sunday Visitor from 1963 to 1989. She retired Aug. 27, 1961, as a business office supervisor with Indiana Bell Telephone Company, Indianapolis, where she had been employed for 33 years. She had also been a secretary in the Huntington mayor’s office for Clarence F. Juillerat. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.

She was born May 15, 1906, in Wabash County to William Merit and Anna Elizabeth Werling Brodrick.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Lena Brodrick and Mary Aufdenkampe; and two brothers, Howard Brodrick and Robert Brodrick.

Calling is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m., at the Hart Funeral Home.

Calling will also be held from 9 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass Friday at St. Anne Home, 1900 Randallia Dr., Fort Wayne. Father Frank Kronewitter will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.

Preferred memorials are to St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, or St. Anne Chapel, Fort Wayne, c/o Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Lathan L. Searles

Lathan L. Searles, 1, rural Bluffton, died at 12:47 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 14, 2001) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne. He had been ill since birth.

He attended the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church.

He was born Nov. 15, 1999, in Fort Wayne to Renea Searles, who survives in rural Bluffton.

Additional survivors include his grandparents, Ray and Jane Searles, Bluffton.

Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home, Bluffton, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Pastor Tim Prowse will officiate. Burial will be at the Mt. Etna Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chromosome 18/22 Center in care of the Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home, 308 W. Washington St., Bluffton IN 46714.

Robert K. Yoder

Robert K. Yoder, 65, of Fort Wayne, died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Yoder had been employed as a model maker at I.T.T. Aerospace, Fort Wayne, for 12 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Navy Reserves.

He was born Jan. 23, 1936 in Adams County to Theodore and Edith Campbell Yoder. He married Janet D. Floyd, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, David Michael Yoder, Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Jennifer Diane vonHarten, Doylestown, Ohio; a sister, Coleen Beverly Mankey, Preble; and three grandchildren. He is also survived by several relatives in Huntington County.

A brother, James Yoder, preceded him in death.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Elzey & Haggard Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Rd., Fort Wayne.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, with calling from 8:30-10 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5401 St. Joe Rd., Fort Wayne. Burial will be at the Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Preferred memorials are to the Seth Kohrman Mission Fund, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, Decatur, IN 46733.
