Dayton U. Wys

Dayton U. Wys, 80, Deer Creek, Ill., died Monday (March 26, 2001) at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, Ill.

Mr. Wys owned and operated Wys Cafe, Deer Creek, from 1957-1965. He also was a maintenance painter for Caterpillar Inc., East Peoria, for 33 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Caterpillar Retirees Club and United Auto Workers Local 974, East Peoria. He was a member of the Deer Creek Baptist Church and for 40 years was a volunteer at the Christian Camps. He was director of the Christian Youth Crusade, from 1959-1974.

He was born on April 7, 1920, in Peoria, to Joseph and Bessie Hefflin Wys. On June 21, 1941, in Peoria, he married Frances Dixon. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Nancy) Whitaker, Minier, Ill., Mrs. Melvin (Wanda) Marsh, Deer Creek, and Mrs. Robert (Patti) Jones, Andrews; on sister, Virginia Marks, Peoria; one brother, Donald, East Peoria; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one granddaughter.

Services were Friday at Deer Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Greg Martha officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Deer Creek, Ill.

Ludwig Mortuary, Morton, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.

Robert S. Swihart

Robert S. Swihart, 70, Peru, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday (April 2, 2001) at Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.

Mr. Swihart was a teacher, coach and administrator for 35 years. He taught at Noble Township and Southwood High School, in Wabash County, before moving to Peru High School in 1968. He retired in 1990. He was a U.S. Army veteran, 1953-1954, serving in Korea.

He was born on June 2, 1930, in Huntington, to Ernest and Esther Otis Swihart. He graduated from Manchester College and Ball State University. On Dec. 29, 1950, he married Nancy Stoltz. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Christopher (Kathleen) Calderbank, Peru; a son, Robert Swihart, Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Keith (Anna) Stonebraker, Ossian; a brother, Kenneth Swihart, Huntington; and two grandchildren.

Calling will be 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Wabash/Miami County Home Health Care and Hospice.

Michele ‘Shelly’ A. Scheuber-Hoover

Michele ‘Shelly’ Ann Scheuber-Hoover, 39, Modesto, Calif., died Saturday (March 31, 2001) at her home.

Ms. Scheuber-Hoover was the 1979 valedictorian at Huntington Catholic High School, graduated with honors in 1981 with an associate of arts degree from Modesto Junior College, Modesto, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from California State University, Fresno, Calif. She was a member of Kappa Delta Phi, a life member of Alpha Gamma Sigma, and a Eucharistic minister at a Catholic church in Fresno.

For 19 years, Ms. Scheuber-Hoover was an elementary school teacher and a mentor teacher in California. She was a member of the California Teacher’s Association.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1961 at San Lius Obispo, Calif., to John R. and Marge E. Scheuber. Her parents survive in Modesto.

Other survivors include a son, Benjamin Kyle Hoover, Modesto; a grandmother, Ellen Olsen, Modesto; a brother, Michael J. Scheuber, Modesto; two sisters, Sandra Scheuber, Alameda, Calif., and Heidi Pefferman, Elk Grove, Calif.

Calling is from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, McHenry Chapel, Modesto, where Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Wednesday. A burial Mass and services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Modesto.

Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, Modesto.

Preferred memorials are to the Shelly Hoover Memorial Library Collection at Alice N. Stroud Elementary School, 815 Frazine Rd., Modesto, CA 95357; Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 95350; or American Cancer Society, 1604 Ford Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.

Charles Miller

Charles Miller, 67, 161 W. 5th St., Roanoke, died at 5:40 p.m. Monday (April 2, 2001) at his residence.

Mr. Miller was a mechanic for General Telephone Company. He attended St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, was a member of the American Legion Post 160, Roanoke, and Eagles Lodge, Columbia City, and was formerly a member of the Moose Lodge, Huntington, and the Roanoke Lion’s Club.

He was born on July 23, 1933, in Kendallville, to Leo D. and Ruth Reemer Miller. On March 23, 1961, he married Barbara M. Fuller. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Linda Burton, Huntington, Rebecca Utterback, Roanoke, and Donna Lampton, Muncie; two sons, John Bryan, Fort Wayne, and Gary Wayne Miller, of Texas; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Barbra Miller, Kendallville, Mrs. John (Helen) Coats, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Carolyn Sue Bertolino, Downers Grove, Ill.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lampton; a daughter, Linda Bolzman; a grandson, Jeffrey Bolzman; and a great-granddaughter.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hart Funeral Home, and from noon until the 2 p.m. services at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County.

Preferred memorials are to the Southern Care Hospice, Fort Wayne, and Sons of the Legion Post 160, Roanoke.

Joyce A. Jones

Joyce Alaine Jones, 61, 353 Frederick St., died at 8:02 p.m. Sunday (April 1, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and was employed five years at the Huntington Nursing Home.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1939, in Closeplint, Harlan County, Ky., to Leland and Lillie King Aslinger. Her mother survives in Hamilton, Ohio. On March 9, 1973, in Hamilton, Ohio, she married Arley Jones. He survives.

Besides her mother and husband, she is survived by five sons, Floyd Scott and Douglas Scott, both of Hamilton, Ohio, Stan Watson, Kokomo, Shane Scott, Chillicothe, Ohio, and Lonnie Jones, Marion, Ohio; three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Adkins, Huntington, and Cathy Myers and Darlene Witt, both of Hamilton, Ohio; three sisters, Alice Adkins, Huntington, Loretta Wolf, Bluffton, Ohio, and Louise Aslinger, Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, J.L. Aslinger, Bedford; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a son, Tony Scott; a grandson, Zaechariah “Zach” Langlais; and a sister, Vivian Phillips.

Calling will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. services at the Gethsemane Freewill Baptist Church, 676 S. Briant St., with Rev. Raymond Stamper and Rev. Steve Kohler officiating.

Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.

Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder, Huntington Chapel, is in charge of arrangements and services.

Helen R. Miller Reed

Helen R. Miller Reed, 80, 5340N Mishler Rd., died at 5:57 p.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Reed had been a floral arranger for 40 years. She was the owner of Miller’s Greenhouse from 1952-66 and had been a floral arranger at the former Betsy’s Bouquet Shoppe in Huntington. She was a member of the Central Christian Church.

She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in New Haven to Thomas and Ada White Hobbs. Her first marriage was to Russell Miller on Aug. 23, 1940, in Decatur. He died Jan. 19, 1976. Her second marriage was to Ralph Reed on Sept. 15, 1990, in Huntington. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Rick Miller, Huntington, and Thomas Miller, Greeley, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Micheal (Deborah K.) Caley, Glidden, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Mrs. David (Sharon) Johnson, Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Franks, Huntington; a brother, Robert Hobbs, Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Hobbs; and two brothers, Thomas Dewey Hobbs and Edward Hobbs.

Calling is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday with Rev. Teal Younce officiating.

Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery, New Haven.

Myrtle E. Huff

Myrtle Elizabeth Huff, 58, 1554 E. Market St., died at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Huff was employed at Memcor for several years. She was a charter member of the First Freewill Baptist Church, Huntington.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1942, in Perry, N.Y., to Gerald and Mary Rice Post. On Dec. 23, 1962, she married Harry Marvin Huff. He died Aug. 8, 1994.

Survivors include two sons, David S. Huff and Kenneth R. Huff, both of Huntington; two daughters, Debra S. Sommers and Darlene F. Phares, both of Huntington; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Post, Perry, N.Y.; four sisters, Virginia Post, Nora Karrer and Lora LaCroix, all of Huntington, and Pat Freeman, Key Largo, Fla.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary L. Huff; and a sister, Mary Prater Whitacker.

Calling is from 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral services at the First Freewill Baptist Church, 1805 Salamonie Ave. Rev. Bruck Conley and Rev. Herman Johnson will officiate at the service.

Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the family.

Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John F. Behrends

John F. Behrends, 78, rural Huntington, died at 3:42 p.m. Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Behrends was employed at E-Systems Memcor, Huntington, retiring in 1987. A graduate of Laketon High School in 1942, he was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington. He was a member and Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, Huntington, and a Past Commander of the State VFW. He was a member of American Legion Post 7, Huntington; Roanoke American Legion Post 160; and a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Marion. He also was a member of the 40 & 8 and the Huntington Exchange Club.

He was born on July 13, 1922, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, to Herman and Martha Pitt Behrends. On Aug. 30, 1942, he married Mary E. Gressley at the Clear Creek Church, Huntington County. She died on March 22, 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Lynnda) Barnes, Huntington, and Mrs. Mark (Londa) Price, Alexandria, La.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Behrends, Austin, Texas.

Besides his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by a son, Sonny Behrends, and two grandsons.

Calling is from 2-5 and 6- 9 p.m. Friday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Saturday funeral services at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St. Father Gary Sigler will conduct the service.

Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery, with full military graveside rites.

Preferred memorials are to The Salvation Army or to Masses, in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.
