Elton Melton

Elton Melton, 67, Evansville, Wis., died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Melton was employed by General Motors for 25 1/2 years, working first at the Janesville, Wis., plant from 1957-1986, and at the Fort Wayne plant from 1986 until his retirement in 1993. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1933, in Parkin, Ark., to Allen T. and Mattie G. Joiner Melton. On Sept. 8, 1960, he married Bette J. Browning. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Randy Melton, Paragould, Ark.; two daughters, Mrs. Kevin (Kathy) Keena and Lori Grayless, both of Evansville, Wis.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Melton, and a brother, Clarence Melton.

Calling will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. Saturday funeral services at Allen-Meredith Funeral Home, 103 W. Main St., Evansville, WI 53536.

Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Wis.

Dean L. Hartle

Dean L. Hartle, 82, died at 1:15 a.m. Thursday (April 5, 2001) at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren, where he was a resident.

Mr. Hartle owned and operated Hartle Plumbing, Huntington, from 1957-1969; and was maintenance supervisor of Epworth Forest Retreat and Conference Center, North Webster, from 1969-1989. He was a member of VFW Post No. 2689, Huntington; Amity Lodge No. 483 F&AM, Huntington; and Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne. He was past president of the South Side Business Association, Huntington; and the Lakeland Kiwanis Club, North Webster. He served in World War II from 1942-46 in the 328th Infantry, fighting in the battles of Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and D-Day 4. He attended Warren United Methodist Church.

He was born Jan. 20, 1919 in Majenica to Earl A. and Lavina Mae Brumbaugh Hartle. He was a 1937 graduate of West Rock Creek High School, Rock Creek Township, Huntington County. His marriage was Sept. 7, 1952 in Huntington to Minnette Will Hartle. She survives.

Also surviving are a brother, Gene Hartle, Huntington; a step-sister, Edith Canaan; a step-brother, Max Morrow; Fort Wayne; two foster children, Alleyne Metzger, Bippus; and Evelvn Teddy, Huntington; and six foster grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Memorial Home, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Memorial Home, with Pastor Herbert Edwards, Rev. John Pattison, Rev. Mike Beall, and Rev. Galen Lowery officiating. Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Warren United Methodist Church, in care of Glancy Funeral Homes, Butler Chapel, 131 N. Wayne St., Warren, IN 46792.

Paul E. Cross

Paul E. Cross, 72, Angola, died on March 20, 2001 at his residence.

Mr. Cross retired in 1983 after 25 years of employment with International Harvester. He was owner of the Pine Haven Hotel, Fort Wayne. He attended Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes, Angola.

He was born Aug. 7, 1928 in Huntington to Harry and Nova Strouse Cross. His first wife, E. Jean Cross, died April 8, 1998. His second marriage was May 29, 1999 to Nancy L. Sutton. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Alan E. Cross, Fort Wayne; a daughter, Kimberly J. Schreve, Fort Wayne; two brothers, Jack Cross, Greencastle, and James Cross, Kendallville; three sisters, Betty Henderson, Warren, and Patricia Hedrick and Joyce Satterthwaite, both of Huntington; two step-daughters, Barbara Pfundstein, Princeton, Ill., and Diane Darragh, Carmel; and 10 grandchildren.

A daughter, Judy Englert, preceded him in death.

Calling will be held from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday at the Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes, junction of Orland Road and CR 300W, Steuben County. Rev. Thomas Smith and Ray Bodie will officiate.

Preferred memorials are to the Steuben County Cancer Society, Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes, and Cameron Hospice and Homehealth, in care of Weicht Funeral Home, 207 N. West St., Angola, IN 46703.

David Wayne Smith

David Wayne Smith, 52, Peru, died at 3:29 a.m. Friday (April 6, 2001) at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.

Mr. Smith was an X-ray technician for Parkview Hospital and Wabash Hospital. He was the former owner of the Standard Oil filing station in Roann, and was a semi-tractor trailer for several years. He was owner of the Bridge View Inn Restaurant, Roann, since 1982. He was a 1966 graduate of Northfield High School, and a graduate of the Parkview School of Radiology.

He was born April 26, 1948 in Peru to Thurman and Elma Rose Fowler Smith. His mother survives.

Also surviving are a brother, Charles Smith Jr., Wabash; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Slee, and Mrs. Steve (Ann) Meyer, both of Roann.

A sister preceded in death.

Calling hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel, Roann, where services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at the Roann Community Center, Roann.

Donald E. Rice

Donald E. Rice, 52, 3262E-800N, Roanoke, died Sunday (April 8, 2001) at his residence.

Mr. Rice was a farmer and had been employed for 12 years at Crosby Excavating, Fort Wayne. He also had worked for General Electric Co., Fort Wayne, for 18 years. He was a Red Cross blood donor.

He was born on June 3, 1947, in Huntington to Marion and Estell Hoover Rice. On Oct. 25, 1969, in Huntington, he married Lina Gaffer. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Bill (April) Comer, Fort Wayne; two brothers, Roger Rice, Huntington, and Kevin Rice, Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. James (Brenda) Burris, Huntington; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Randal Rice.

Calling will be from 4-8 p. m. Tuesday at the Roanoke Memorial Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be at Zion Cemetery, Huntington.

Preferred memorials are to the donor’s choice.

Mae McCombs

Mae McCombs, 86, 4871-1000N, Huntington, died at 12:10 p.m. Friday (April 6, 2001) at Norwood Nursing Home.

Mrs. McCombs was a homemaker. She was a 1932 graduate of Clear Creek High School, and a member of Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, Goblesville.

She was born Feb. 1, 1915 in Huntington County to Harry L. and Grace Agnes Shideler Pence. Her marriage was June 9, 1934 in Huntington to Carl McCombs. He survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Janice) McElhaney, Mrs. Gene (Mary Lou) DeHaven and Mrs. Terry (Cheryl) Reckard, all of Huntington; two sisters, Marie Lahr, Huntington, and Mrs. Burdette (Helen) Mickley, Jupiter, Fla.; two brothers, Carl Pence, North Manchester, Dale Pence, Columbia City; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Carolyn Warner, and two brother, D.L. Pence and George Pence, preceded in death.

Calling hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hart Funeral Home. There will also be calling from 9:30 a.m. Monday at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, Goblesville, until 10:30 a.m. funeral services, with Rev. Robert Jarboe officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Faith Chapel United Methodist Church.

Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce D. Fouts

Joyce D. Fouts, 50, 455 N. Broadway, died at 12:40 p.m. Sunday (April 8, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Fouts, a former resident of Chicago, had been employed as a press operator for Wabash Magnetics for 11 years. She was a member of the South Broadway Church of Christ and was a graduate of Elkhorn High School in Elkhorn, Ky.

She was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Pikeville, Ky., a son of Edward Belcher and June Ramey Belcher. Her mother survives in Huntington. She married Roy D. Fouts Aug. 17, 1968, in Elkhorn, Ky.; her husband survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Donovan E. Fouts, Huntington; three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Cassandra) Couch of Huntington, Mrs. Shane (Sabrina J.) Jones of Indianapolis, and Selena Fouts, at home; four brothers, Jimmie E. Belcher and Jerry D. Belcher, both of Tazewell, Tenn., and Joe E. Belcher and Johnny M. Belcher, both of Pike County, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Lois Jean) Spradlin, Elkhorn, Ky.; and three grandchildren.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Charles R. Gamble will officiate. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Esta Lewis Dixon

Esta Lewis Dixon, 84, 4584W-100S, died at 6:25 p.m. at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis on Wednesday (April 4, 2001).

Mr. Dixon was a tool and die master moulder maker at General Tire and retired in 1981 after 41 years. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Wabash and the Laketon American Legion.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1917 in Laketon to Esta N. Dixon and Estella Mae Cripe. His mother survives. His marriage was Oct. 11, 1941 in Huntington to Gwen Arabelle Flora Dixon. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Larry Dixon, Arvada, Col.; a daughter, Linda Lou Mylin, Carmel; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and a daughter.

Services will be held at St. Matthews United Church of Christ, 1717 N. Wabash St., Wabash, on Friday, April 13 at 5 p.m. Officiating clergy will be Pastor Richard Rensuer and Richard Clark.

Preferred memorials are to St. Matthew's UCC Youth Group Camp Fund.

Eva Nichols Wegesin

Eva Nichols Wegesin, 84, Muncie, died Sunday (April 8, 2001) at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

Mrs. Wegesin was a 1934 graduate of Muncie Central High School who worked as a private secretary at McCarty Lumber in Muncie. Later, she and her husband, PGA golf professional Harold Wegesin, managed the LaFontaine Country Club golf course in Huntington as well as golf courses in Muncie, Rushville and New Castle. Upon returning to Muncie she worked for the Delaware County Board of Sanitation until her retirement.

She was born March 28, 1917, in Muncie, to Pearl and Hazel Lewis Nichols. Her marriage to Harold Wegesin was on Aug. 2, 1947 in Muncie. He survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Cathy Robinson, Leesburg, Va., and a granddaughter.

Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Meeks Mortuary, 415 E. Washington St., Muncie. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 900 White River Blvd., Muncie, with Pastor Stan Peterson and Pastor John Malzahn officiating.
