Mary E. Stech

Mary Elizabeth Stech, 80, of Indianola, Wash., died April 16, 2001, at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale, Wash.

Mary Stech was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Huntington to Elmer and Nancy Stech. She attended Manchester College, the University of Washington, and Seattle University. She began her career as a teacher near Mishawaka. She then entered the field of professional Girl Scouting, directing Camp Robbinswold and developing and directing River Ranch Girl Scout camps in Washington. She later returned to teaching at Redmond, Asa Mercer Junior High and counseling and teaching at Roosevelt High School. In 1999, Washington Gov. Gary Locke honored her with a Golden Apple award. She also instructed dog obedience classes and showed dogs. In 1984, she received the Obedience Club Achievement Award and the Gaines Medal for Good Sportsmanship. She was an active member of the Suquamish Congregational United Church of Christ, Suquamish, Wash., where she helped organize and prepare holiday food baskets and assisted with annual church bazaar activities.

Survivors include two sisters, Opal Stech, West Lafayette, and Faun Hite, North Manchester.

Two sisters, Thelma Boxell and Avis Brown, preceded her in death.

There were no services, however, a celebration of her life will be held at the Suquamish Congregational UCC Church at a later date.

Bernard D. ‘Spike’ Shivley

Bernard D. “Spike” Shivley, 84, 4554W-100S, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Shivley was a lifetime resident of Huntington. He retired in 1977 as a conductor with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, where he had worked for 38 years. He owned Shivley Trucking Company and did piggyback business for the railroad. He was a courier for the First National Bank and Harold’s Auto Parts for several years. He was a member of St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ, the Bippus Lions Club, the Mizpah Temple of Fort Wayne, Hapzim Shrine Club of Huntington, and Order of the Eastern Star Floral Chapter 75. He was a 50-year member of Amity Lodge 483 F&AM, Huntington, and a 50-year member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley, Fort Wayne. Mr. Shivley drove the bus transporting children to the Shriners Hospital for several years.

He was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Huntington to Frank and Blanche M. Peacher Shivley. He graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1936. His first marriage was to DeVota Byrd on July 3, 1937, in Huntington. She died Jan. 27, 1978. His second marriage was to Mary Ellen Brown Underhill in Huntington. She died in December of 1983. His third marriage was to Myra Huston Morrett on Oct. 6, 1984, in Huntington. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James D. Shivley and Garry L. Shivley, both of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Mary Ella) Speidel, Greentown; a stepson, John Morrett, Andrews; a stepdaughter, Cheri Martz, Roanoke; a sister, Alma Smith, Huntington; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel W. Shivley; three brothers, Paul “Zip” Shivley, Kenneth Shivley and Kermit Shivley; three sisters, Harriett Wilson, Hazel Fulton and Effie Kimmel; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Friday, with Masonic services following at 8 p.m., at the Bailey-Love Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary with Rev. Jonathan Heaslet officiating.

Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.

Kenneth C. Sink

Kenneth Charles Sink, 68, Greenwood, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Sink retired from Olin Brass, Indianapolis, in 1991 with 31 years of service. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Martinsville. He was in the Navy during the Korean War, serving from 1951-54. He had been a resident of Greenwood since 1984 and had spent most of his life in Martinsville.

He was born Oct. 3, 1932, in Morgan County, to Gilbert W. and Ruth S. Stierwalt Sink.

Survivors include a son, Michael Charles Sink, Indianapolis; a brother, Gary Dale Sink, Huntington; a sister, Esther Moreland, Huntington; and a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ray William Sink, Gilbert Lee Sink, Robert Eugene Sink and Donald Keith Sink; and two sisters, Sarah Evelyn Ritter and Christine Ruth Sink.

Calling is from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Neal & Summers Mortuary, 110 E. Poston Rd., Martinsville, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Martinsville.

Mildred L. Johnson

Mildred L. Johnson, 80, 4 E. Sunnydale Dr., died at 1:09 p.m. Thursday (April 26, 2001) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Johnson was a longtime Memcor employee and was a lifelong member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She was born March 28, 1921, in Huntington, to Albert and Maude Braden Teusch. She married Kenneth L. Johnson in Wabash in 1939; her husband preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth A. Johnson, Huntington, and John Johnson, Chicago; three daughters, Mrs. Doug (Carol) Cravens, Maumee, Ohio, Marilyn Isaac, Huntington, and Mrs. Ted (Janet) Stamper, Sharon, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Pauline Webb, Crescent City, Fla., and Roseann Bennett, Paoli; and a brother, Robert Teusch, Huntington.

A daughter, Mary Lou Johnson, plus six brothers and six sisters preceded her in death.

Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St. The Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the church or to the Diabetes. Association.

Elsie D. Hansen

Elsie D. Hansen, 81, 495 Thomas Rd., died at 6:38 p.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Hansen was the founder of New Life Sanctuary in Huntington, a home for young unwed mothers, which she was still operating at the time of her death. She was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Huntington and had been a self-employed beautician for many years.

She was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Queens, N.Y., a daughter of John and Martha Passe Haug. She married Albert C. Hansen May 7, 1943, in Queens, N.Y.; her husband died in August 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Craig J. Hansen and Richard W. Hansen, both of Huntington; two daughters, Joy Goetz Kinsey and Gay Iannuccilli, both of Huntington; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Trebing, and a great-grandchild.

Calling is 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 1640 E. Taylor St., with Pastor Karl Fleig officiating. Burial will be at Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Life Sanctuary in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington IN 46750.

Elizabeth E. Creager

Elizabeth E. Creager, 82, 5510N-200E, died at 3 a.m. Thursday (April 26, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Creager was a homemaker.

She was born March 15, 1919, in Indianapolis to Robert and Ella J. Sweezy Miles. She graduated from George Washington High School, Indianapolis, in 1937. She married Roland W. Creager in 1937, in Indianapolis. Her husband died Nov. 6, 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Devon (Bonnie) Bates, Huntington; a sister, Gertrude Ladikos, Avon, Ohio; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Seth Miles and Floyd Miles; and two sisters, Leona Smith and Margaret Miles.

There will be no calling hours or services.

Burial was Friday at the White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Mich.

Bailey-Love Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Shipbaugh

Ruth E. Shipbaugh, 77, a resident of the Renaissance Village of Fort Wayne for the past eight months and a former resident of Mt. Etna, died at 5:04 p.m. Saturday (April 28, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Shipbaugh was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church, Mt. Etna.

She was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Huntington to Preston Henry “P.H.” and Emma Stenzel Caley. She married Frank Shipbaugh in Chicago in 1940. Her husband died Dec. 12, 1982.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Wava) Kline, Goshen, and Mrs. Kenny (Connie) Wright, Huntington; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Caley and Chet Caley; and four sisters, Peg Hartwig, Jaunita Cox, Betty Ludwig and Louetta Campbell.

Calling is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Hart Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Tim Prowse will officiate.

Burial will be at the Mt. Etna Cemetery, Mt. Etna.

Preferred memorials are to the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6073S-594W, Huntington, IN 46750.

Milo F. Fudge

Milo Franklin Fudge, 87, of rural Roanoke, Jefferson Township, Whitley County, died at 7:16 p.m. Saturday (April 28, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Fudge farmed for more than 50 years. He had also worked as a railroad employee for 10 years, at Fortmeyers Truckstop for two years, and drove a school bus for Jefferson Township School in Whitley County for nine years. He was a member of the Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church, Columbia City.

He was born Dec. 1, 1913, in rural Allen County to Dean A. and Pearl F. Arnold Fudge. He grew up in Eel River Township, Allen County, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1932. He married Luella M. McBride in Churubusco in 1941. They lived in Fort Wayne for three years, then moved to Monroeville, where they lived until moving to Jefferson Township, Whitley County, in 1946. His wife died Jan. 6, 1984.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth W. Fudge, Fort Wayne, and James Leon Fudge and Gale Lavern Fudge, both of Columbia City; two brothers, Charles Fudge and Robert Fudge, both of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dean LaVon Fudge; two brothers, Dean Fudge Jr. and Arthur Fudge; and a great-granddaughter.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Gammon officiating.

Burial will be at the Eel River Cemetery, rural Churubusco.

Preferred memorials are to the Hope House for Children at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, in care of DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City, In 46725.
