John H. Schipper

John H. Schipper, 77, a resident of Cleveland Township in Whitley County, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Schipper farmed in Cleveland Township and had been employed by the Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Centerview Community Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in South Whitley. He served with the United States Army in Europe during World War II.

He was born March 19, 1924, in Roann, a son of Herman and Ruth Baker Schipper. He married Edith Hissong Nov. 27, 1947; his wife survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Steven Schipper, Colfax, and Rex Schipper, South Whitley; three sisters, Katherine Betz of Huntington, Lois Buffington of Columbia City, and Velma Johnson of Baton Rouge, La.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Schipper, and a sister, Marie Sickafoose.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Miller Chapel, 208 N. Maple St., South Whitley. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Roy Blake of the Centerview Community Church officiating.

Burial will be at South Whitley Cemetery.

Fenton E. West

Fenton E. West, 90, a former resident of Pump Road, Markle, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Mr. West’s current address was 801 Huntington Ave., Warren.

He worked for 30 years as a manager of manufacturing engineering at General Electric plants in Kokomo, Fort Wayne, and Erie, Pa. He retired in 1968. He was also president and chairman of the board of directors of West Engineering Consulting. He received his teaching degree from Ball State University in 1932. He was a member of the Markle Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. He was a 50-year member of Markle Lodge 453, F. & A. M.

He was born July 19, 1910, in Woodland, Ill., to Fred and Carrie Cavitt West. He married Maxine Hough in Fort Wayne on Aug. 31, 1935. His wife died Dec. 3, 1999.

Survivors include a son, James E. West, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth West, Metarie, La.; and a sister, Josephine Tedford, Markle. A brother, Russell West, preceded him in death in 1974.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation at 9 a.m. Friday at the Markle Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. with Gerald Moreland officiating.

Burial will be at Markle Cemetery.

Preferred memorials, in lieu of flowers, are to the Markle Church of Christ Debt Retirement Fund in care of the church, 455 E. Morse St., P. O. Box 379, Markle IN 46770.

Paul ‘Pete’ J. Lane

Paul “Pete” J. Lane, 78, 1515 E. State St., died at 10:38 p.m. Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Lane was a supervisor at Schacht Rubber Company, Huntington, for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He had worked for the Huntington Street Department from 1982-93. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a light mortar gunner in the European and African-Middle Eastern Campaign during World War II. He received three bronze stars. He attended First Church of the Nazarene, Huntington.

He was born on March 14, 1923, in Danville, to Everett P. and Mae Bruce Lane. On Nov. 28, 1946, he married Alice M. Parker. His wife survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James L. (Pam) Wright and Mrs. Patrick (Carol) Bir, both of Huntington, and Lynn Wright, Markle; two brothers, Harold Lane and Richard Lane, both of Iowa; a sister, Imo Jean Wakeland, Idaville; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. Gene Vickery will preside at the services.

Burial will be at Gardens of Memory, Huntington County.

Preferred memorials are to the Huntington Home Health Care and Hospice, in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Anna R. Widner

Anna Rosa Widner, 76, Speed, Mo., died Tuesday (May 2, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Widner was a member of the Speed Union Church, where she had taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and served as Sunday school superintendent the past four years. She had been a 4-H leader for 37 years.

She was born April 21, 1925, in Huntington County, to Mark and Pearl McDaniel Bollhoefer. She married Howard Widner May 29, 1941, in Marion; her husband died March 13, 1998.

Surviving are six sons, Dean Widner and Hugh Widner, both of Speed, Mo., Ralph Widner and Mark Widner, both of St. Joseph, Mo., Lee Widner, Lone Elm, Mo., and Jerry Widner, Ballentine, Mont.; a daughter, Anne Kempf, Bunceton, Mo.; a sister, Alta Keifer, Huntington; two brothers, Phillip Bollhoefer, Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Henry Bollhoefer, Tyner, Ind.; a half-sister, Nina Morris, Texas; a half-brother, Harold Redding, McComb, Miss.; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Von Bollhoefer and Art Bollhoefer, and two sisters, Pauline Rodgers and Ethel Pace.

Calling is 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the William Wood Funeral Home, Boonville, Mo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Speed Union Church. Burial will be at the Mt. Herman Cemetery, Cooper County, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Speed Union Church.

Virginia E. Reddin

Virginia E. Reddin, 77, 1731 Freedom St., died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday (May 3, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Reddin, a lifelong Huntington County resident, graduated from Huntington High School in 1941. She retired from Wabash Magnetics, where she worked as a press operator, and had also worked at Utrad and Memcor in Huntington. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.

She was born June 21, 1923, in Huntington County, a daughter of R.V. Sands and Marie Kline Sands. She married Madison M. Reddin May 6, 1972, in Huntington; her husband survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Gary J. Brown, Huntington, and Gregory K. Brown, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Mrs. William (Sheryl) Rea and Mrs. Danny (Cynthia) Hubartt, both of Huntington; a sister, Marjorie Gonzales, Fresno, Calif.; a stepson, Danny Wayne Reddin, Pikeville, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, including Kline Sands and Edward Sands; and a sister, Hielda Laurie.

There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Star of Hope Cemetery, with Rev. Raymond Waldfogel officiating.

The Bailey-Love Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

David E. Mansbarger

David E. Mansbarger, 33, Upland, died at 6:28 p.m. Tuesday (May 1, 2001, at his home as a result of an accidental gunshot wound.

Mr. Mansbarger was employed at the Chrysler Casting Plant, Kokomo, where he had worked for eight years as a millwright. He was a member of ABATE of Indiana and the United Auto Workers, Kokomo. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, hunting, metal detecting, mushroom hunting and antique cars.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1967, to Robert C. and Joan Mansbarger. His father survives in Marion; his mother, Joan Stoffel, survives in Huntington.

Other survivors include a son, Clayton Mansbarger, Upland; a daughter, Celeste Mansbarger, Upland; a sister, Susan Mansbarger Sell, Andrews; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Betty Mansbarger, Marion; and his maternal grandparents, Hazel and Kendall Poole, Somerset, Ky.

He also is survived by a special family friend, Connie Linn, Marion.

Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, at 400 E. Main St., Gas City, where funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Tom Mansbarger will officiate the services.

Burial will be at the Estates of Serenity, Marion.

Preferred memorials are to the David E. Mansbarger Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Esther M. Jackson

Esther M. Jackson, 98, a resident of Tipton House, 460 Forks of the Wabash Way, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday (May 2, 2001) at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Jackson, a 1919 graduate of Huntington High School, had worked in the kitchen of Huntington Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Huntington.

She was born Dec. 19, 1902, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Chauncey E. and Lena L. Stemen May. She married Harley Webber in 1920 in Warren. They were divorced in 1946. Her second marriage was on Aug. 30, 1947 in Daleville to Cecil Jackson; he died Jan. 8, 1952.

Survivors include a son, Marvin R. Webber, Raymond, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara Armstrong) Carter, Huntington; a stepson, James S. Jackson, Bluffton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Schmeling, Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mrs. Lyle (Margaret) Cook, Huntington, and Mrs. Lewis (Dorothy) Pfefferle, Worthington, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a stepdaughter.

Calling is 5-8 p.m. Friday and noon-1 p.m. Saturday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation in care of the Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington IN 46750.

George L. Fleck

George L. “Bud Lamar” Fleck, 76, 1923 Camden Ct., died at 1:19 a.m. Thursday (May 3, 2001) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Fleck had lived most of his life in the Andrews area. He was retired from farming, having farmed in Dallas Township, Huntington County, and Lagro Township, Wabash County. He had also worked for the Huntington County Farm Bureau in Bippus. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and Loon Creek Odd Fellows Lodge 322, both of Andrews. He had served on the board of trustees for the Riverside Cemetery in Andrews for over 30 years. He served in the 26th Infantry Division of the Army during World War II and was a life member of the military Order of the Purple Heart.

He was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Andrews, to Elmer C. and Dessie O. Kline Fleck. He graduated from Lagro High School in 1943. He married Jean Ellen Gaston on March 23, 1947, in Urbana. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Donald E. Fleck and Steven D. Fleck, both of Andrews, and James A. Fleck, North Manchester; two daughters, Patricia A. Fleck and Mrs. Gary (Cynthia S.) Stout, both of Huntington; a brother, Charles Fleck, Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mrs. George (Virginia) Airgood and Mary Lois Chamberlain, both of North Manchester; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Gregory L. Fleck, preceded him in death.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 3995N-1000W, Andrews, with Rev. Ronald Bowman officiating.

Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Andrews.

Preferred memorials are to St. Paul’s Child Care Ministry; Hospice; or Cancer Services for Huntington County, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.
