Virginia G. Lieurance

Virginia G. Lieurance, 78, 3691E Shafer Rd., Warren, died at 1:21 a.m. Thursday (May 3, 2001) at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center, Bluffton.

Mrs. Lieurance and her husband, Joseph, farmed in Huntington and Wells counties. She was a member of the Boehmer Church in Wells County, the Rockford Friendship Club and United Methodist Women.

She was born May 11, 1922, in Rockcreek Township, Wells County, to Charles B. and Mary E. Reece Inskeep. She graduated from Rockcreek High School, Wells County, in 1940. She married Joseph W. Lieurance in Marion on Nov. 19, 1941. Her husband survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Johnson, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Rick (Connie) Smelser, Richmond; a brother, Bill Inskeep, Liberty Center; three sisters, Mary Esther Line, Berne, Mrs. Edwin (Emojean) Brown, Montpelier, and Mrs. Warren (Charlene) Young, McClure, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A sister, Dorotha Rochon, preceded her in death.

Calling is 5-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Barry Humble officiating.

Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.

John E. Lehman Sr.

John Edward Lehman Sr., 43, North Manchester, died Monday (April 30, 2001) at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Lehman was a machine operator with the Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne for 24 years. He was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne.

He was born March 22, 1958, in Columbus, Ohio, to Harry and Sylvia Schmidt Lehman. His mother survives and lives in Fort Wayne. He married Beth A. Finley on April 14, 2001. His wife survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John Edward Lehman Jr. and Shaun Matthew Lehman, both of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Danielle Marie Lehman, Fort Wayne, and Shannon Lynn Lehman, Pembroke Pines, Fla.; a stepson, Lance Allen Pulley, Fort Wayne; a stepdaughter, Jami Jo Dusley, North Manchester; two brothers, Gary Lehman, Fort Wayne, and Timothy Lehman, Columbia City; and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1999; and a brother, Robert Lehman, who died in 2000.

Calling is 5-9 p.m. Friday at the D. O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Pastor Robert Bruckner will officiate.

Burial will be at the Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Lulu E. Bear

Lulu E. Bear, 91, rural Roanoke, died Wednesday (May 2, 2001) at her home.

Mrs. Bear was a homemaker and a member of the Fairview Church of God, Yoder.

She was born Aug. 7, 1909, in Wells County to Elmer and Clemmie Griffith Platt. She married Jayce B. Bear in Huntington on Nov. 23, 1927. Her husband died Nov. 4, 1974.

Survivors include a son, Dee Bear, Columbia City; a daughter, Sheila Bear Troxel, Longview, Texas; three sisters, Gloria Wygant and Patricia Switzer, both of Roanoke, and Rebecca Merckx, Huntington; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard L. Bear and Rex D. Bear; and three brothers, Glen Platt, Elmer Platt Jr. and Roy Platt.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday at the Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, Ossian. Rev. Dan Horwedel will officiate. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Preferred memorials are to Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice or the Diabetes. Association.

Max L. Sprowl

Max Leroy Sprowl, 72, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at a hospital in Corpus Christi.

Mr. Sprowl retired from the Webb County Sheriff’s Department in Laredo, Texas. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 547, Corpus Christi.

He was born Aug. 4, 1928, in Huntington to James and Mary Sprowl.

Survivors include two sons, James Leroy Sprowl, New Palestine, and Thomas Wayne Sprowl, Richmond, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Karen Sue) Hudson, Bay City, Texas, Cheryl Sprowl, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Judy Gail Sprowl, Alice, Texas; a brother, Marion Sprowl, Angola; two sisters, Sara Pressler, Bronson, Mich., and Betty Fisher, Huntington; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Shockome; and a brother, Rex Sprowl.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the New Options Funeral Home, 3720 S. Alameda, Corpus, Christi, Texas.

Mildred M. Meredith

Mildred M. Meredith, 95, formerly of North Manchester, died at 10 a.m. Friday (May 4, 2001) at the Wabash Healthcare Center, Wabash, where she was a resident.

Mrs. Meredith had been employed as a stenographer for the Marion Shoe Company, Marion, and Wayne Tank & Pump Company, Huntington. She formerly owned the Tasty Bakery in Hillsdale, Mich. She was a member of the First United Brethren Church in Marion.

She was born Nov. 10, 1905, in Huntington to Charles and Inia May Burnworth Foulke. Her first marriage was to Sydney S. Tye, who died in 1950. Her second marriage was to Forrest Harkness on May 18, 1953; he died March 17, 1977. Her third marriage was to Rudolph Courtney on Jan. 24, 1981; he died April 3, 1986. Her fourth marriage was to Lester Meredith in 1990; he died in 1999.

She is survived by several stepsons, stepdaughters, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hopewell Cemetery, Lagro, with Rev. J. P. Freeman officiating. Burial followed.

DeLaughter-McKee North Manchester Chapel, 1401W Ind.-114, North Manchester, was in charge of arrangements.

Lorna Jean ‘Nanny’ Prince

Lorna Jean “Nanny” Prince, 62, 5847E-500N, Roanoke, died at 6:25 p.m. Friday (May 4, 2001) at the Northeast Indiana Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Prince was a homemaker.

She was born on July 20, 1938, in Fort Wayne, to Calvin M. and Ruby M. Guy Clouse. They survive in Fort Wayne. She was married to Forrest S. Prince. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Kevin Eric Wehr, and John D. Gardner, both of Fort Wayne; a stepson, Kemuel S. Prince, Rome City; two stepdaughters, Dawn R. Steinken, of Illinois, and Keturah Wallace, of Georgia; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Calling will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home, Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne.

Private graveside services will be at a later date. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society.

Luther Bowling

Luther “Big Bud” Bowling, 75, 1474W-550S, Warren, died at 9:13 p.m. Sunday (May 6, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Bowling worked as a foreman at IMCO for many years, retiring in 1970.

He was born March 3, 1926, in Auxier, Ky., to Mance and Lula Hunt Bowling. He married Helen J. Kaylor on Dec. 20, 1952, in Huntington. His wife survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Steven N. Bowling and Tristen L. Bowling, both of Warren; five daughters, Helen Frances, Decatur, Mrs. Russell (Jeanie) Freestone, Mrs. Jimmy (Trilyn) Asher and Mrs. John (Karleen) Shultz-Herring, all of Warren, and Mrs. James (Cheri) Britten, Huntington; two brothers, James Bolding, Warren, and Emory Bolding, Huntington; two sisters, Audrey Whitt and Angie Mayo, both of Garrett, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, James L. Bowling and Cris Bowling; and two brothers, Claude Bolding and Clyde Bolding.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Elzie Spencer will officiate.

Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Alice A. Stephens

G. Kenneth Stephens, 87, and his wife, Alice A. Stephens, 83, died early Tuesday morning at their home in Richland Township, Whitley County.

Mr. Stephens served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was then employed by General Electric Company, Fort Wayne. He was a member of the Columbia City Eagles Lodge and the Larwill Wesleyan Church.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1914, in Roanoke, a son of Nate and Maggie Swing Stephens. He was raised in Roanoke and graduated from South Side High School, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Stephens was a homemaker. She was a member of the Larwill Wesleyan Church.

She was born on Oct. 18, 1917, in Allen County, to Veronica Laier. She completed her education at Elmhurst High School, Fort Wayne.

The couple was married on Oct. 20, 1934, making their home in Waynedale. In 1945, they purchased their farm in Whitley County.

Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Hassoun, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Larry (Dorothy) Plummer, Warsaw, Mrs. Kenny (Alice) Hyser, Pierceton; Mrs. Rich (Marta) Hawkins, South Whitley, and Mrs. Phil (Jeanne) Keirn, Pierceton; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

The couple was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Lee Stephens, on Sept. 6. 1978.

There is no calling.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Boonville Cemetery, Richland Township, Whitley County, with Rev. James A. Clifford officiating.

Preferred memorials are to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in care of Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City, IN 46725.
