Martha G. Rigsbee

Martha G. Rigsbee, 88, a resident of the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Marion, died there at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 29, 2001). She had been a resident of the center since October.

Mrs. Rigsbee was the secretary at Rigsbee Janitor Supply in Marion for several years. She was a former resident of Seymour, where she directed the choir at First Presbyterian Church and taught piano lessons. She played the organ for many years at the former Shawley Funeral Home in Marion. She was a member of the First Friends Church in Marion, where she had been a member of the Time Builders Sunday School class, taught a children’s Sunday School class, and played for musical cantatas. She was a member of the Department Club, the Business Professional Women’s Club, and the Lyric Club, all of Marion, the Triad Musical Organization in Seymour, and Tri Kappa Sorority in Marion and Seymour. She was a 1931 graduate of Fairmount High School and graduated from Marion College in 1935 with a degree in piano.

Mrs. Rigsbee was born Nov. 25, 1913, in Pleasant Township of Grant County, to Claude and Georgia Gibson Julian. She married Paul W. Rigsbee June 23, 1935, in Grant County. Her husband died Dec. 31, 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Paul E. Rigsbee, Jonesboro, Phillip C. Rigsbee, Marion, and Don M. Rigsbee, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Phyllis French, Marion, and Mrs. Tom (Janice) Kulczyk, Jonesboro; plus 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the First Friends Church, 2211 N. Wabash Road, Marion. Additional calling will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastors George V. Taylor and Terry H. Dieckmann officiating. Burial will be in the Gardens of Memory cemetery.

The Bailey-Love Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Preferred memorials are to Wings of the Morning Flight Ministry in care of the funeral home, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.

Margaret A. Smith

Margaret A. Smith, 88, rural Huntington, died at 1:42 p.m. Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Smith was a schoolteacher for the Huntington County Community Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for more than 50 years and a member of the Indiana and Huntington County Retired Teachers associations. She was a 1930 graduate of West Union High School, a 1932 graduate of Manchester College and a 1963 graduate of Huntington College. She was a member of the Better Living Home Extension Club.

She was born on June 2, 1913, in Tuscola County, Michigan, to Orlo and Irene Hite Brickley. She married John O. Smith on Feb. 12, 1938, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death May 27, 1985.

Survivors include a son, Steven Smith, Huntington; two daughters, Sandra Boxell, Huntington, and Sharon Boundy, Batavia, Ohio; a sister, Grace Brickley, Huntington; plus eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph H. Brickley.

Calling was 2-6 p.m. Sunday and will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Elder Tom Pitney and Elder Phillip Nigh officiating. Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Primitive Baptist Church in care of the Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Suzanne L. Morris Wheat

Funeral services for Suzanne L. Morris Wheat were held Nov. 24 at the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, Ill.

Mrs. Wheat, 58, a longtime resident of DeKalb, Ill., and formerly of Fort Wayne, died Nov. 20, 2001, in Beaufort, S.C., after a long illness.

She had been a Realtor with McCabe Crum-Halsted and Elsner Realty in DeKalb for nearly a decade and also worked at Dulin & Associates, an architectural firm. In 1985, she started working for the U.S. House of Representatives in Congressman John E. Grotberg’s Sycamore, Ill., office. She continued with his successor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, and retired as casework director and office manager due to illness in 1998.

She was elected for two consecutive terms on the school board for DeKalb Community Unit District 428 and also served as president of the PTA. She was chairman of the DeKalb County Republican Central Committee and president of the DeKalb County Republican Women’s Club. An active member of Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary, she received their highest award when honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

She was born May 28, 1943, in Fort Wayne, to Joseph Sylvester and Florence Hedwig Luebbenjans Morris. She was the great-great-granddaughter of Peter Karst, who donated and delivered most of the heavy timber that was used in the construction of the first church building of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Huntington. She married Thomas E. Wheat at the Hoagland Methodist Church on Dec. 21, 1963.

Survivors include three sons, J. Marc Wheat, Arlington, Va., Chris Wheat, Beaufort, S.C., and Thomas Wheat, Alexandria, Va.; four sisters, Barb Hartman, Ashley, Mary Bordner, White, Ga., and Kathy Morris and Linda Osterholt, both of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren; and several relatives in the Huntington area.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the DeKalb County Hospice, 2727 Sycamore Rd., DeKalb, IL 60115.

Thomas J. Karst

Thomas J. Karst, 67, 5435W Division Rd., died at 7:14 p.m. Monday (Nov. 26, 2001) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Karst farmed in Lancaster Township and was a bus driver for the Huntington County Community School Corporation for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1014, and the Huntington County Cattleman’s Association. He served as a past board member for the Huntington 4-H Fair Association.

He was born April 15, 1934, in Huntington, to Joseph and Anna McNulty Karst. He graduated from Huntington Catholic High School. He married Janet Juillerat at St. Mary Catholic Church on July 24, 1954. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Joe (Teresa) Updike, Mrs. L. Joe (Elaine) Carroll, and Mrs. Todd (Jennifer) Little, all of Huntington; a brother, Philip Karst, Huntington; a sister, Mrs. William (Mary Helen) Saluke, Kettering, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Allen Karst, and two brothers, Robert Karst and John Karst.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m., at the Hart Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., with Father Gary Sigler officiating.

Burial will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice of charities, in care of the Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Joyce E. Kirby

Joyce E. Kirby, 71, 1105 Byron St., died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Kirby worked at Canadian Marconie Company in Montreal, Canada, and was a Gray Lady Volunteer with the American Red Cross.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1930, in Montreal to James Fairhurst and Ellen Hinks. She married Frank N. Kirby on April 14, 1951, in Montreal. Her husband preceded her in death Jan. 4, 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. John (Carol) Hacker-Doehrman, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Greg (Bobbi) Ehler, Huntington; two sisters, Frances Boulton, Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Kay Reed, White House, British Columbia; plus four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A sister, Doris Ellsworth, preceded her in death.

Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Lyman officiating. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Berneace E. Hite Miller

Berneace E. Hite Miller, 91, a resident of the Community Care Center of Huntington, died there at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2001).

Mrs. Miller was a farm wife and Avon representative in Huntington County. She served as social and educational leader of the Huntington County Farm Bureau from 1954 to 1964 and was a past president of District 4 of the Farm Bureau Women Leader. She was a 50-year member of the Indiana Farm Bureau and served as the State Farm Bureau’s legislative representative to Washington, D.C., in 1961.

She was also a 50-year member of the Huntington County Homemakers Extension Club and Warren Township Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Huntington Garden Club, Associated County Women of the World, the Indiana Gladiolus Council, and the Michigan Gladiolus Society of North America Gladiolus Council. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Howard Rebecca Circle and the Vanguard Group.

Mrs. Miller was born on June 17, 1910, in Tuscola County, Mich., to Nathan P. Lassiter and Eva Druley Lassiter Bonebrake. She was a longtime resident of Huntington County and a 1928 graduate of Clear Creek High School.

Her first marriage was to Roy W. Hite Dec. 4, 1932, in Huntington. He preceded her in death Sept. 27, 1969. She married Merwin C. Miller April 14, 1973, in Huntington. He died Jan. 20, 1997.

Survivors include her foster son, Jack White, Bippus. Two brothers, Floyd Lassiter and Foster Lassiter, and two sisters, Edna Andrews Roach and Silva Folk, preceded her in death.

Calling hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the mortuary with Rev. David Arnold officiating.

Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery.

Leota L. Gilbert

Leota L. Gilbert, 90, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home, died there at 4 a.m. Monday (Nov. 26, 2001).

Mrs. Gilbert, a former resident of Montpelier, had been a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home for several years. She was a member of the Tri Kappa Sorority in Montpelier and served on the Montpelier-Harrison Township Public Library Board for several years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Montpelier, and taught Sunday School at the church for several years.

Mrs. Gilbert was born Nov. 25, 1911, in Linn Grove, Ind., to Courtney Runyon and Lilly Gentis Runyon. She married Robert D. Gilbert; her husband died May 25, 1990.

Survivors include a son, Jack A. Gilbert, Fremont, Neb.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Reuben Runyon, Lima, Ohio; and a sister, Nema Fields, Geneva.

Calling will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. John Bellante officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery, Montpelier.

Preferred memorials are to Jack Gilbert in care of the Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier, IN 47359.

Robert E. Taylor

Robert E. Taylor, 82, 603 N. Grover St., Warren, died at his home at 6:30 a.m. Friday (Nov. 23, 2001).

Mr. Taylor had been employed by the Dana Corp., Marion, for 28 years. He retired in 1982 as personnel manager. He was a past president of the AFL-CIO in Marion and had chaired the Grant County United Way.

He was a member of the Warren Wesleyan Church and a 1936 graduate of Warren High School.

He was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Huntington County, a son of Paul A. Taylor and Madge Hazel Carter Taylor. He married Claudine Campbell April 27, 1940, in Kentucky; his wife survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Merrill (Saundra S.) Hethcote, Warren; a son, Robert K. Taylor, Converse; a sister, Joan Davison, Columbia City; his stepmother, Marjorie Taylor, Columbia City; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Noel Dean Taylor, a granddaughter and a great-grandchild.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown and Son Chapel, Warren, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Rev. Bill Barlow will officiate. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
