Mary M. Herndon
Mary M. Herndon, 80, Indianapolis, formerly of Huntington, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 19, 2001) at her home.
Mrs. Herndon was a member of Christ the Shepherd Church of the Brethren in Greenwood and was a former member of the Brethren Church in Huntington.
She was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Huntington, to John and Lydia Anders Reeves. She married Carl E. Herndon Sr., who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Carl E. Herndon Jr. and Mike Herndon, both of Indianapolis; three daughters, Sylvia Jackson, Alexandria, La., Carolyn Green, Indianapolis, and Gerri Longanecker, North Manchester; a brother, Harold Reeves, Huntington; a half brother, Paul Dolby Jr., Huntington; plus 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A half brother, Carl Dolby, preceded her in death.
Calling is from 2 p.m. until the 4 p.m. funeral service Saturday at Hart Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery.
Russell G. Gravitt
Russell G. Gravitt, 45, 550 N. Jefferson St., died at 1:39 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) from smoke inhalation during a fire at his home.
Mr. Gravitt had lived in Huntington for the past two years and was formerly of Iowa.
He was born Jan. 26, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Russell L. and Mona L. Morgan Gravitt. His parents survive.
Also surviving are a son, Jeremy Gravitt, of Iowa, and two daughters, Tina Gravitt and Tracy Gravitt, both of Iowa.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30, at the Powers Funeral Home, Creston, Iowa.
Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.
Mildred Briggs
Mildred Briggs, 96, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 18, 2001) at the Norwood Nursing Center.
Mrs. Briggs was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its Women’s Guild, Psi Iota Xi Associates, First Mothers Club, and the Hospital Guild. She had also been involved in Girl Scouts.
She was born March 4, 1905, in Huntington to Carl P. and Edith Miles Steele. She married Harley Briggs May 29, 1924; her died June 20, 1997.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Vermilya, Fort Myers, Fla., Mrs. David (Susan) Marshall, Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Robert (Charlotte) Hamor, Hudson, Ohio; plus 12 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Oleson; three sisters, Lelia Miller, Margaret Johnson and Dorothy Hummer; and two brothers, Ned Steele and Dr. Dick Steele.
Calling is 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Hart Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Frank Gready officiating. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Bo F. Lloyd
Bo Franklin Lloyd, 20, 110 S. Warren St., Warren, died at 9:38 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 19, 2001) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Mr. Lloyd died of injuries received in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday evening in Huntington County.
He had attended Huntington North High School and was employed by The Rocks restaurant in Huntington.
He was born Nov. 16, 1981, in Huntington.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ida Lloyd Berry and Todd Berry, Warren; his father, Jody D. Bradley, Berne; two sisters, Brooke Berry, Warren, and Ashley Bradley, Mendon, Ohio; a brother, Thomas Bradley, Mendon, Ohio; his grandparents, Bonnie Lloyd, Bluffton, and Cleo and Onalee Bradley, Bluffton; his great-grandmother, Mary Lloyd, Jonesboro; his stepgrandparents, Stanton and Tamara Widmeyer, Warren; and his stepgreat-grandmother, Beatrice Parkhurst, Cayuga.
He is also survived by his fiance, Alicia Bauer, Warren.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Warren Wesleyan Church, 219 E. 6th St., Warren, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Bill Barlow and Pastor Tom Bradley will officiate. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.

Audra I. Battershell
Audra Irene Battershell, 91, of Columbia City, died at 5:55 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 20, 2001) at The Oaks Living Center in Columbia City.
Mrs. Battershell retired in 1972 from the Wayne Pump Company in Fort Wayne, where she had worked for 29 years. She was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Fort Wayne.
She was born March 18, 1910, in Roanoke, to Don W. and Edna Fisher DeWitt. She married Doyle S. Battershell in Fort Wayne on March 9, 1929. Her husband died March 28, 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (Betty) Schnepp, Columbia City; three sons, Wayne M. Battershell, Bluffton, and Richard D. Battershell and Lynn Battershell, both of Roanoke; two sisters, Francil Hand, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ruth Porter, Fort Wayne; plus 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Donna Mae Battershell, preceded her in death.
Calling will be held from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Saturday at the Roanoke Memorial Chapel, 240 Crestwood Dr., Roanoke.
Burial will be at the Prairie Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Howard G. Johnson
Howard G. Johnson, 85, 2415 Waterworks Rd., died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 22, 2001) at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Mr. Johnson had owned and operated Johnson Glass Shop in Huntington for many years. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher and was a member of the Bethel Evangelical United Brethren Church.
He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1934 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Huntington.
He was born Nov. 24, 1916, in Montpelier, a son of Robert Johnson and Bertha Barnthouse Johnson. His first marriage was to Doris Roush, who died in 1938. He married Ruby Smith Sept. 15, 1988, in Nevada; she survives.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Phyllis) Smith, Venice, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Kathy Ford, Churubusco; three stepsons, Charles Smith and John Smith, both of Fort Wayne, and Trent Smith, Columbia City; 2 grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, and 5 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Johnson and Levi Johnson; and three sisters, Thelma Ramsyer, Opal Schmidt Morris, and Anna Baker Tobler.
Calling is noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday, with Rev. Jack Littlefield officiating. Burial will be at Brookside Memorial Park, Montpelier.
Ruby L. Hildreth
Ruby L. Hildreth, 97, a resident of the Timbercrest Home in North Manchester, died at the home at 10:40 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 22, 2001).
Mrs. Hildreth was a member of the Salamonie Church of the Brethren. She had been employed as a secretary by Sears and Marshall Field, both in Chicago, and had also worked at the Chicago Quartermaster Corps.
She was born Aug. 30, 1903, in Huntington County, a daughter of Enoch Crull and Mary Werking Crull. Her first marriage was on June 30, 1929, in Chicago to Carl Schleeter, who died Jan. 11, 1980. her second marriage was on Sept. 19, 1981, in North Manchester to George Hildreth, who died Nov. 2, 1986.
She is survived by two stepchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
There are no calling hours.
The family will hold graveside services at 2 p.m. Monday at Lancaster Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 4 at the Timbercrest Home, North Manchester.

Maryellen Ferguson
Maryellen Ferguson, 96, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, died at 9:18 a.m. Friday (Dec. 21, 2001) at the home.
Mrs. Ferguson retired in 1971 after teaching 47 years at Roosevelt and Center elementary schools in Grant County. She was a graduate of Marion College. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, Business and Professional Women, Sigma Phi Gamma, Mississinewa Chapter 94 Order of the Eastern Star, the Loyalty League and First United Methodist Church in Marion.
She had lived most of her life in Grant County before moving to the United Methodist Memorial Home four years ago.
She was born July 22, 1905 in Grant County, a daughter of Everett and Ica Bell Speaight. On Aug. 17, 1938 in Covington, Ky. she married George L. Ferguson, who died June 30, 1990.
Mrs. Ferguson is survived by a sister, Eleanor Simmons, of Warren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin Speaight and Jack Speaight.
Calling will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral Monday at United Methodist Memorial Home. Rev. John Pattison will officiate.
