Ruth McCord
Ruth McCord, 102, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home since March 1979, died at the home at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001).
Miss McCord lived in Warren most of her life. She was a 1916 graduate of Warren High School. She graduated from Blaker’s Teachers College in Indianapolis before receiving her bachelor’s degree from Ball State Teachers College.
She taught at Warren High School for 39 years and taught for two years at Harrison Hill School, Fort Wayne. She was a member of Tri Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma sororities and of the United Church of Christ, Warren.
She was born Aug. 20, 1899, in Warren, to Ambrose and Nellie Irwin McCord. She is survived by a niece, Carolyn Gregory, Fort Wayne.
Calling is from 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Charles Dye Jr. officiating.
Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.
Preferred memorials are to the United Church of Christ, Warren.
Arthur Hall
Arthur Hall, 67, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Hall worked as a metal finisher, retiring in 1985 from Wayne Metal Products of Markle. He had also worked as a coal miner in Kentucky. He was baptized at the South Broadway Church of Christ in Huntington.
He was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Floyd County, Ky., a son of Ballard and Clercy Hall. He married Phyllis J. Tackett on Nov. 5, 1952, in Melvin, Ky.; his wife died July 14, 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie R. Hall, Huntington, and Donnie H. Hall, Ypsilanti, Mich.; a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Yvonne) Goble, Ypsilanti, Mich.; two brothers, Ted Hall and Charles Hall, both of Huntington; five sisters, Susana Johnson, Huntington, Mary L. Branham, Wheelwright, Ky., and Ora Tackett, Maggie Slone, and Ersey Williams, Bevinsville, Ky.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Lema Hall Cooper and Linda Price; two sisters, Madgie Hall and Margie Hall; and three brothers, William R. Hall, Donald G. Hall, and Banks Hall.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Service, Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Rev. Charles Gamble and Rev. Elzie Spencer will officiate. Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Mertie E. Cowan
Mertie E. Cowan, 102, 148 W. Fourth St., Roanoke, died at 10:55 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren.
She lived in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, for 60 years and moved to Roanoke in 1991. She was a former school teacher and had also worked as a clerk at Richards Department Store. She was a member of Christ’s United Methodist Church in Roanoke. She was also a 75-year charter member of the Whitley County Homemakers Club, a 75-year member of the Roanoke Order of the Eastern Star, and a 75-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Laud. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Daughters of the Nile, and the Shrine Widows Club, the latter two both in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Cowan was born on Jan. 29, 1899 in Milford, Ill., to Walter F. and Caroline Suter Gillins. She married Loren W. Cowan on Aug. 11, 1923, in Milford. Her husband preceded her in death in April of 1971.
Survivors include a son, Gerald Cowan, Leo; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Calling hours are Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Roanoke Memorial Chapel.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel with Pastor Veryl Roth officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery
in Roanoke.
Preferred memorials are to the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Learning Center, 431 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne, and to Christ’s United Methodist Church, 148 W. Third St., Roanoke.
Blair M. Wechsler
Blair M. Wechsler, 92, 3613W-200N, died at 11:18 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Mrs. Wechsler was a graduate of Latta, Okla., High School and attended Huntington College. She worked at Noble Shoe Store, LaFontaine Hotel and Crites Bakery, all in Huntington. She was a 50-year member of College Park Church where she was a member of Women’s Missionary.
She was born Oct. 3, 1909 in Randolph County to Ralph W. and Roxie Kerns Wood. Her marriage was Feb. 23, 1925 ,in Huntington, to Clifford H. Wechsler. He died Sept. 3, 1992.
Survivors include two sons, C. Stuart Wechsler and David B. Wechsler, both of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Carolyn) Adams of Huntington; three sisters, Elizabeth Brown of Huntington, Mrs. Harold (Margorie) Cook of Nappanee, Mrs. Carlos (Frances) Kennedy of Flat Rock, N.C.; a brother, Lesslie Wood of Peoria, Ariz; 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Bowman and Nellie Mason.
Calling is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey-Love Mortuary, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Raymond Waldfogel officiating.
Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County.

Joshua D. Kerlin
Joshua David Kerlin was stillborn at 8:36 a.m. Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He is survived by his parents, Dennis and Dawn Flora Kerlin, Huntington.
Additional survivors include his grandparents, David and Patricia Flora, Huntington, and Daniel and Susan Kerlin, Findlay, Ohio; his great-grandparents, Berniece Flora and Vivian Elzey, both of Huntington, Eugene and Joan Weber, Findlay, Ohio, Robert and Phyllis Kerlin, Fremont, Ohio, and Arthur and Helen Zender, Fostoria, Ohio; and his great-great-grandmothers, Helen Kerlin, Old Fort, Ohio, and Marie Durst, Clyde, Ohio.
Private graveside services will be held Monday.
Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy L. Hunt
Dorothy L. Hunt, 79, rural Roanoke, died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Hunt was a homemaker and a teacher. She was a member of Seminary United Methodist Church in Roanoke, the American Association of University Women, Old Fort Settlers, Trillium Garden Club, and the Conservateers.
She was a graduate of Michigan State University and St. Francis College.
She is survived by a son, Gordon Hunt, Roanoke; a daughter, Nancy Ongiri, Pennsylvania; a brother and several grandchildren.
Her husband, William Hunt, died in 1998. A brother also preceded her in death.
Calling is one hour prior to the funeral service, scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roanoke Memorial Chapel.
Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

Matthew G. Hallman
Matthew G. Hallman, 23, Fremont, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Fort Wayne.
Mr. Hallman was a 1996 graduate of New Hope Christian School, Camden, Mich., and attended Huntington College, where he was active in theater productions, for two years. He was a private first class in the Army and had been stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He attended Anchor Community Church in Fort Wayne .
He was born March 26, 1978 in Southampton, Ont., to Gerald C. and Rozanne Stucky Hallman. His parents survive.
Other survivors include three brothers, Timothy M. Hallman and Jeremy C. Hallman, both of Fort Wayne, and Mike MacFarlane of Angola.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Hallman.
Calling is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel and one hour before the 11 a.m. Friday funeral service at College Park United Brethren Church. Rev. Bill Case will conduct the services.
Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery
in Huntington.

Arden Charles Gemmer
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 5 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Uniondale, for Arden Charles Gemmer, 84, who died Dec. 18, 2001, at his home in Walnut Creek, Calif.
Mr. Gemmer was born in Nov. 23, 1917 in Huntington, to Charles and Irene Notter Gemmer. His marriage was in September 1941, in Zanesville, to the former Betty Hoopingarner. She died in February 2000.
Survivors include three sons, David Gemmer of Alamo, Calif., James Gemmer of Suisan, Calif. and Robert Gemmer, of Healdsburg, Calif.; three sisters, Geraldine Clancy of Warren, Gladys Tharp of Huntington, and Phyllis Gruber of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Gemmer, Indianapolis.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 21 in California.
