Wallace G. Coolman
Wallace G. Coolman, 72, 721E-100S, died at 10:17 p.m. Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) at his home.
Mr. Coolman was a lifelong Rock Creek and Lancaster Township farmer. He had also worked as a truck driver for the Huntington County Highway Department for more than 27 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Loon Creek Church of the Brethren where he was a lifetime deacon, song leader for the church, and choir member. He was also a member of the Markle Barbershoppers for many years. He served in the Army military Police during the
Korean War.
He was born Nov. 30, 1929, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, to Mark H. and Mildred L. Hacker Coolman. He was a life resident of Huntington County and a 1947 graduate of Lancaster Township High School. He married Della A. Vaughn in Huntington County on Nov. 14, 1948. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert D. Coolman, Bluffton, and Michael R. Coolman, Warren; a brother, Richard L. Coolman, Warren, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Pastor Richard Stiver will officiate.
Burial will be at Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County.

Vesta V. Baxter
Vesta V. Baxter, 89, died at 1:25 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 29, 2001) at Miller’s Merry Manor, Huntington. She was formerly a resident of The Tipton House, Huntington.
Mrs. Baxter had been a cook for Huntington Township School until retiring in the 1960s. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was born Aug. 17, 1912, in Huntington to Roy and Naomi Settelmeyer Weaver. She married Ivan “Bud” Baxter in Huntington on May 1, 1937. Her husband died July 31, 1992.
Survivors include two sons, Rex Baxter, Huntington, and Phillip Baxter, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Opal VanDine, Huntington; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Davis; and a brother, Floyd Weaver.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hart Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Michael Wertenberger will officiate.
Entombment will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Frederick E. Shumm
Frederick E. Shumm, 79, of Bluffton, died Tuesday morning (Jan. 1, 2002) in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Shumm had been an engineer for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad for more than 44 years. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bluffton, and Veterans of Foreign wars Post 2689, Huntington.
He was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Wells County to Clark and Blanche Shumm. His first marriage was to Mary Jane Seabold, who died in 1972. His second wife, Ann C. Shumm, preceded him in death in 1990.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James (Penelope) Nottler, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Rick (Pamela) Myers, Bluffton, and Prudence Shumm, Huntington; two stepdaughters, Marie Kaiser, Seattle, Wash., and Mary Beth Berning, New York City, N.Y.; two stepsons, Thomas Berning, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Chris Berning, Fort Wayne; and several grandchildren.
A brother, Joe Mettler, preceded him in death.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hart Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Father Larry Kramer and Gerald Moreland will officiate. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Ben Holloway
Ben Holloway, 88, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Delphi.
Mr. Holloway was a lifelong resident of Carroll County and had been employed as a truck driver for the Carroll County Highway Department for many years.
He was born March 22, 1913, in Carroll County to Manford and Lillie Wood Holloway.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Charles (Eva) Grove, of Midland, Mich., and formerly of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Holloway and Ada Holloway; and a brother, Fred Holloway.
Calling will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Thursday at the Hickory Grove Church, Delphi. Pastor Norb Zootman will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Delphi.
Hart Funeral Home, Huntington, is in charge of arrangements.
Rachel A. Tucker
Rachel Ann Grant Tucker, 40, died at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at her home in Cleveland Township, Whitley County.
She had been self employed as a truck driver for the Moorman Trucking Company for several years. She was a member of A.B.A.T.E.
She was born Aug. 17, 1961, in Huntington County to Franklin D. and Ruth Ann Geist Grant. She graduated from Whitko High School in 1979 and attended Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne for four years.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth Ann Geist Grant, South Whitley; a sister, Clara North, South Whitley; three brothers, Sam Grant and Ben Grant, both of South Whitley, and Matthew Grant, Albion.
She is also survived by her fiance, Randy Moorman, South Whitley.
Her father, Franklin Grant, preceded her in death.
Calling is 2-9 p.m. Friday at the Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, 208 N. Maple St., South Whitley, where funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Jonathan Damon will officiate. Burial will be at the South Whitley Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society or to the donor’s choice of churches, in care of Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, 208 N. Maple St., South Whitley.
Mary L. Rees
Mary L. Rees, 65, a winter resident of Mission, Texas, and summer resident of Huntington, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001).
Mrs. Rees was a member of the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church, Floral Chapter 75 Order of the Eastern Star, Joy Pleasers Clown Ministries, Past Matrons Club and Ladies of the Nile. She also taught clown classes and she and her husband were members of Roving Sam’s Chapter 5 Camping Club.
She was born Feb. 9, 1936, in Huntington to Robert and Iris Harrell Koughn. Her mother survives and lives in Huntington. She married Charles D. Rees on July 19, 1953. Her husband survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Linda Clay, Wabash, Lora Siegfried, Tampa, Fla., and Lola Telfer and Lisa Bireley, both of Huntington; three brothers, William Koughn, Islemorado, Fla., David Koughn, Huntington, and Mark Koughn, Hawaii; a sister, Sally Baylog, Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her father she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Koughn Jr.
A memorial service for Mrs. Rees will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church.
Preferred memorials are to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Carl S. Peting
Carl S. Peting, 86, died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) in Orland, where he was a resident.
Mr. Peting retired as a tool and die maker with the Dana Corporation in 1978 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Lake George Lutheran Chapel, the American Legion in Orland, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Garrett. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He was born June 14, 1915, in Huntington.
Survivors include a son, Fred C. Millner, Huntington; a daughter, Carol Sue Day, Huntington; a sister, Mildred Winkelman, Huntington; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen L. Peting, who died June 29, 1993.
Calling will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Friday at the McComb Dilgard Cline Funeral Home, 502 N. Main St., Auburn. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Auburn.

Charles L. Frushour
Charles L. Frushour, 81, of Syracuse, died at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Frushour was the former owner of Lakeland Produce Co., Syracuse, and the 10 Pin Restaurant & Lounge, Columbia City. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Syracuse, the Moose Lodge in Warsaw, the American Legion in Lagro, the Eagles Lodge in Syracuse, the Warsaw Bowling Association and the Indiana Bowling Association. He was also a Hall of Fame member in the Syracuse Bowling Association and an IHSAA athletic official from 1938-70. He was a veteran of the United State Army.
He was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Lagro to Claude C. and Joicey E. Hunt Frushour. He had been a resident of Syracuse since 1949 and was formerly of Warsaw.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Linda) Foy, Greenbrier, Tenn.; a son, Terry Frushour, Denton, Texas; a sister, Juanita Burcroff, Lagro; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
