Max A. Couch
Funeral services for Max A. Couch were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren, with Rev. Joe Sumwalt officiating. Masonic services preceded the funeral services.
Burial was at the Masonic Cemetery, Warren.
Max A. Couch, 74, of Bluffton, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Couch had worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight Systems in Barstow, Calif., retiring in 1990. He moved to Huntington after he retired. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 776 F&AM in Whittier, Calif., and had served in the U.S. Army from March 26, 1946, to April 27, 1947, during World War II.
He was born May 27, 1927, in Allen County to Frank Emmerson and Anna J. Blackburn Couch. He married Maxine West in Mexicali, Mexico, on June 19, 1975. His wife survives.
Also surviving are a son, Terry Allen Couch, El Centro, Calif.; a stepson, Michael San Paolo, Jeffersonville, Ga.; a brother, Richard D. Couch, Ossian; two sisters, Tess Burke, Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Michael (Anita) Jerman, Payette, Idaho; and four grandchildren.
Rosa M. Keefer Carpenter
Rosa M. Keefer Carpenter, 85, of Mason, Ohio, and formerly of Huntington, died at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at Otterbein-Lebanon in Mason, Ohio.
Mrs. Carpenter was born May 16, 1916, in Huntington to James U. and Lula VanMeter Slagel. Her first marriage was to Russell Keefer, who preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to John Carpenter, who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Case and Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Mullen, both of Mason, Ohio; a son, Gerald Keefer, Maineville, Ohio; two brothers, Ervin Carpenter, Auburn, and Charles Bragg, Huntington; several grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, James Keefer and Donald Keefer; a sister, Ruth Bradfield; and three brothers, Jim Slagel, Garl Slagel and Fred Carpenter.
Calling will be held from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral service Saturday at the Hart Funeral Home.
Burial will be at the Zion Cemetery.
Lillian H. Bisset
Lillian H. Bisset, 88, formerly of Huntington, died at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Bisset performed with her father and brothers on stage doing Vaudeville during her early years. She then went on to study nursing, graduated as a registered nurse, and practiced in Rochester, N.Y. After her marriage she worked as a homemaker. She attended St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Church, Fort Wayne.
She was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Rochester, N.Y., to Charles Henry Hodge and Lillian Belle Patchen. She married Paul J. Bisset, who died Feb. 13, 1973.
Survivors include a son, John Paul Bisset, Burke, Va.; a daughter, Alice Elaine Bisset, Huntington; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Calling is 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hart Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, with rosary at 9 a.m., at St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Church, Tillman and Hessencastle roads, Fort Wayne. Father Soos will officiate.
Burial will be at the Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Masses or to the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, in care of Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.
Mary Ellen McSpadden
Mary Ellen McSpadden, 96, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Friday morning (Jan. 11, 2002).
Mrs. McSpadden was of the Presbyterian faith.
She was born Jan. 3, 1906.
Survivors include two granddaughters, Rosemary McSpadden, Huntington, and Mrs. Roger (Shrill) Cross, Fort Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe McSpadden.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Fike Funeral Home, 2415 N. Ocoee St., Cleveland, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of the Fike Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Vaughn officiating.
Interment will be at the Pine Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cleveland, Tenn.
John R. ‘Randy’ Goebel
John R. “Randy” Goebel, 51, 1645 Cherry St., died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 10, 2002) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Goebel worked for United Technologies of Huntington and was the former owner of Coast-to-Coast, which was located in Jefferson Plaza. He was a lifelong resident of Huntington and graduated from Huntington County Community High School in 1968.
He was born Feb. 18, 1950, in Huntington to John A. and Joline Shoemaker Goebel. His parents survive and live in Huntington. He married Cathy J. Spotts in Huntington on Dec. 31, 1993. His wife survives.
Other survivors include a son, Chris Goebel, Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Abi Goebel, Tampa, Fla.; a stepson, Chris Fisher, Tempe, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jeff (Nikki Fisher) Burnworth, Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Terry (Pam) McNutt, Gas City; and a granddaughter.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday. Rev. Jonathan Heaslet will officiate.
Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
Wanda H. Freed
Wanda H. Freed, 80, a resident of Riverside Drive, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday (Jan. 11, 2002) at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Freed was a coil winder for Square D in Huntington, retiring in 1974. She was a member of the East State Street Church of God and a member of the church’s Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Democrat Women’s Club, the Happy Grandmothers Club, and a 55-year member of the Neta Eta Chi Bunco Club.
Mrs. Freed was born April 25, 1921, in Huntington, to James F. M. and Malinda Davis Smith. She married Ed Scudder Jan. 21, 1940; he died March 31, 1971. She married Leo “Peck” Freed Nov. 10, 1974; her died Feb. 26, 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Starre Roth, Howard, Ohio, and Janet Gish, Huntington, and 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel. Additional calling will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the East State Street Church of God, 608 E. State St. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Pastor Stephen Stull officiating. Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.

Patricia A. Ditton
Patricia Ann Ditton, 68, 2048 Camden Ct., died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002) at her home.
She had lived in Huntington most of her life and retired from Miller’s Merry Manor in 1992 after 20 years of service. She was a member of Heritage Church of Christ, Huntington, and was involved in card playing at the Salvation Army.
She was born Sept. 3, 1933, in Huntington to Benjamin Harrison and Eithel Martha Appier Ditton.
Survivors include two brothers, Fred Ditton and Jerry Ditton, both of Huntington; and a sister, Mrs. Raymond (Bernice) Christ, Fort Wayne.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Ditton and Charles Ditton; and a sister, Jessie Burns.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Jerry Bailey, Royce Evans and Russell Buzzard will officiate.
Burial will be at the Clear Creek Cemetery, Huntington County.

Dick D. Buzzard
Dick Dwight Buzzard, 70, a resident of Markle Health Care, died at the home at 8:40 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002).
Mr. Buzzard, a former resident of Huntington, had worked in physical therapy and in emergency medical services at Huntington Memorial Hospital from 1979 to 1985. He had also worked in physical therapy at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion for 26 years.
He was born May 12, 1931, in Jefferson Township, Huntington County, a son of Noel and Ruby G. Dillon.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Kristin) Morrison, Columbia City, and Mrs. Alan (Kim) McCurdy, Huntington; three brothers, Noel C. Buzzard, Jack D. Buzzard, and Dale E. Buzzard, all of Warren; a sister, Mrs. Harley (Kathern) Ralston, Warren; and three grandchildren.

Rosemary Broxon
Rosemary Broxon, 80, Fort Wayne, died Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002) at her home.
Mrs. Broxon, a resident of Fort Wayne since 1928, retired in 1998 from Summit Bank, where she had managed the safe deposit department. She was a member of the Simpson United Methodist Church and a former member of Saturn Christian Church.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 62, Roanoke, and was a past worthy matron of the organization. She was also a member of the Gad-A-Bouts and Royal Neighbors of America.
She was born March 15, 1921, in Terre Haute. She married Paul N. Broxon, who died in 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Donald P. Broxon, Richmond, Va., Robert W. Broxon, Fort Wayne, and James E. Broxon, Conyers, Ga.; two daughters, Mildred Jane Wasmuth, Fishers, and Mary K. Kline, St. Peters, Mo.; a brother, William B. Jones Jr., Indianapolis; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca A. Broxon, who died in 1997; and two sisters.
Calling is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at D. O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Chapel, 4017 Maplecrest Rd., Fort Wayne. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at the Broxon Cemetery
in Whitley County.
