Vernie H. Gray
Vernie H. Gray, 95, of Logansport and formerly of Huntington, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002) at Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gray was the retired manager of the Chicago Motor Club in Huntington, where he had worked for 37 years. He had formerly been employed at the gas company in Logansport. He was a U.S. Army infantry veteran of World War II, during which time he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He had also served as assistant chaplain in the Army.
He was a member of Clymers United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Lions Club and Moose Lodge. He served as director of Logansport’s Chase Boys Choir for several years. He had also resided in Chicago for a number of years.
He was born Jan. 19, 1906, in Logansport to Harold and Sadie Urich Gray. He married Eulalia Kane Johnson in Chicago on Aug. 4, 1930. His wife died in 1985.
Mr. Gray is survived by two grandchildren, Frances Kay Myers, Kokomo, and Vincent Skelton, Logansport; three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcella Skelton; a brother, Edward Gray; and a sister, Opal Appleton.
Calling is 3-7 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday at the Kroeger Funeral Home, 711 E. Market St., Logansport. Rev. Greg Britt will officiate.
Burial with full military honors will take place at St. John’s Cemetery, Cass County.

Jay H. Yoos
Jay H. Yoos, 49, Chicago, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Yoos was a sales and marketing executive. He was a 1970 graduate of Loyalsock High School, Willamsport, Pa., and a 1974 graduate of Notre Dame University.
Mr. Yoos was born July 1, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Henry and Virginia Nopson Yoos. His parents, former residents of Markle, survive and reside in Melbourne, Fla.
Also surviving are two sisters, Dr. and Mrs. John (Barbara) Pagana, Selings Grove, Pa., and Cheryl Sterling, Buffalo, N.Y.
Calling will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Markle Chapel, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Gerald Moreland officiating. Burial will be at the Markle Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held in Chicago at a later date.

Donald J. Williams
Donald Jay Williams, 53, rural Hartford City, died at 6:20 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Mr. Williams had worked for the 3-M Company in Hartford City for 33 years. He was a member of the Bethel Center Church of the Brethren, Hartford City; United Paperworkers International Union Local 186; and the Indiana Trail Riders Association.
He was a member of Blackford County Masonic Lodge 106 , the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, the Mizpah Temple in Fort Wayne, and the Mizpah Temple Horse Patrol in Columbia City.
He graduated from Hartford City High School in 1966 and served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970.
He was born June 29, 1948, in Hartford City, a son of Joyce Elsworth Williams and Fae M. Campbell Williams. He married Nancy Marie McIlwain July 30, 1999, in Columbia City; his wife survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jayme (Michelle Renee) Kunz, Hartford City, and Mrs. Kris (Angie M.) Banter, Matthews; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Judith Elaine) Eltzroth, Paw Paw, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
Calling is 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Monday and 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Al Kundenreich and Rev. Lloyd Hall will officiate. Burial will be at the Hartford City Cemetery.

Joseph B. Rupel
Joseph B. Rupel, 68, Upland, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
Mr. Rupel owned and operated Rupel Tax Service and had retired from Rupel Builders. He was a former member of the Upland Chamber of Commerce and a member of Jefferson Center United Methodist Church in Huntington County.
He was a 1951 graduate of Andrews High School and graduated from International Business College, Fort Wayne.
He was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Lilbourn, Mo., to Floyd and Mabel Whiteside Rupel.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Detamore; three daughters, Pam McClellan, Anderson, Mrs. Dave (Sally) Brodkorb, Upland, and Shelly Rupel, Indianapolis; five grandchildren; and three brothers, Gene Rupel, California, Dean Rupel, Marion, and Roger Rupel, Fort Wayne.
Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and prior to the 2 p.m. Monday services at Jones-Smith Funeral Home, 259 N. Main St., Upland. Rev. Kathie Jones will conduct the services.
Interment will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County.
Robert L. McLain
Robert L. McLain, 78, Marion, died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at Marion General Hospital.
Mr. McLain owned and operated McLain Upholstery from 1958 to 1985. He was a World War II Army veteran and received a European-African-Middle East Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Purple Heart, and a WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of the Mississinewa Boat and Ski Club. He was a Golden Gloves boxer. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and attended the Westminster Men’s Prayer Breakfast.
He was born June 20, 1923, in Marion, to George and Florence Lucinda Small McLain. He was a life resident of Marion. He married Muriel Coughenhour on May 26, 1946. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two daughters Mrs. Gary (Linda) Minton,Huntington, and Mrs. Scott (Carol) Holmes, Marion; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson. A grandson preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion. There will be no calling hours or services.
Memorial donations may be made to the family.

Bernadine T. Giere
Bernadine Teresa Giere, 98, died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at the St. Anne Home, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Giere was a secretary for the probation department in the Fort Wayne Federal Building. She was a secretary with Walley Agricultural Service, retiring in 1968. She was a member of the Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the church’s Rosary Society, and the Daughters of Isabella.
Mrs. Giere was born Sept. 17, 1903, in Fort Wayne, to John and Josephine Nussman Hartman. She married Mark A. Giere May 16, 1938; her husband died in 1974.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Johnson, Fort Wayne, and Donna Holzinger, Huntington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Cletus Hartman, Fort Wayne.
Calling will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the D. O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with additional calling 30 minutes prior to the service, at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 1500 W. State Blvd., Fort Wayne. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery
in Fort Wayne.
Preferred memorials are to the Queen of Angels parish, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, or the Sisters of Mercy.
Clifford J. Fry
Clifford J. Fry, 73, Fort Wayne, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Fry was a barber for 25 years. He also worked for John Dehner Construction and Ron Gutmann Construction. He was a union member and an Army veteran of the
Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Jeaneen; two sons, David Fry, Fort Wayne, and Michael Fry, Yoder; three grandchildren; a sister, Jane Gutmann, Zanesville; and two brothers, Frank Fry Jr. and Fred Fry, both of Texas.
There will be no calling or services. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.
Preferred memorials are to the American Lung Association and Cancer Services of Allen County.
Edward M. Millican
Edward Maynard Millican, 64, of Bunker Hill and formerly of Andrews, died at 11:10 p.m. Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indianapolis.
Mr. Millican had worked as a conservation officer in California.
He was born June 1, 1937, in Buchanan, W. Va., to William Samuel Millican Sr. and Leta Schreve Millican. He was raised in Andrews.
Survivors include a sister, Gail Powers, Grand Blanc, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Private family services will be held at the home of Mr. Millican’s nephew, David Perry, of Kokomo, at a later date.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Andrews.
Ellers Mortuary, 725 S. Main St., Kokomo, is in charge of arrangements.
