James L. Stouder

James L. Stouder, 70, 749 E. Market St., died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Stouder was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 in Huntington. He was also a truck driver for 15 years and a newspaper carrier for the Huntington Herald-Press for two years. He also carried papers for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette for nine years and was a past owner/operator of Jim’s Cab in Huntington.

Mr. Stouder was born on Jan. 18, 1932 in Whitley County to Leo and Phoebe Comestock Stouder. He married Phyllis Hine on June 14, 1954, in Huntington. His wife survives.

Other survivors include six sons, Tom Stouder, Huntington, Charles “Sam” Stouder, Huntington, James M. Stouder, Huntington, Rob Stouder, Andrews, Tim Stouder, Huntington, and Richard “Hank” Stouder, Huntington; two daughters, Pat Stouder, Huntington, and Mrs. Charles (Leetta Bell) McClurg, Huntington; a brother, Jack Stouder, Huntington; a sister, Janice Scarbough, Huntington; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Robert Stouder and Charles Stouder and three grandchildren preceded him in death.

Calling hours are from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Huntington Chapel. Funeral services are Friday at 11 a.m. at the chapel with Capt. Tim Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Andrews, with graveside services held by V.F.W. Post 2689.

Preferred memorials are the donors’ choice.

John P. Carroll

John P. Carroll, 83, Huntington, died at 8 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at his home.

Mr. Carroll was a self-employed general contractor and real estate developer. He was a member of the St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ in Huntington and served for many years on the church’s administrative council and the St. Peter’s Cemetery board of trustees. He was a member of the Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club, the Shrine and Scottish Rite in Fort Wayne, the American Legion Post 7, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 in Huntington.

A 1936 graduate of Huntington Township High School, Mr. Carroll served in the National Guard and helped establish the Armory in Huntington. He also was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater in a heavy artillery unit in the Battle of Okinawa. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Amity Lodge in Huntington and was on the Huntington County Board of Realtors. He was a past president of that board and received the Realtor Emeritus Recognition in December of 2001. He also played for a time with the Nazarene Band.

He and his wife constructed numerous sub-divisions in Huntington and Huntington County, including Orchard Lane, Orchard Hill, Orchard Ridge, Bel Air and the development of Kmart and other projects along Guilford Street.

Mr. Carroll was born on April 6, 1918, in Huntington to Homer and Ferrel Witters Carroll. He married Betty M. Windemuth on June 16, 1940 in Huntington. His wife preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 1998.

Survivors include a son, David W. Carroll, Huntington; a daughter, Karen Carroll Hoffman, Huntington; two brothers, Thomas Carroll, Huntington, and Owen M. “Bill” Carroll, Farmington, N.M.; a sister, Enid Smith, Bloomington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Keith Carroll and Theron Carroll, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel. Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Jonathan Heaslet officiating. Interment will be at the St. Peter’s First United Church of Christ Cemetery in Huntington.

Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St.

Nova Schoeff

Nova Schoeff, a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren, died at the home Tuesday morning (Jan. 22, 2002).

She was a former resident of Jackson Township, Wells County.

Arrangements are pending at Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown and Son Chapel, Warren.

Evelyne C. Vanskyhawk

Evelyne C. Vanskyhawk, 92, 1514 Avon Place, died at 3 p.m. Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at her home.

Mrs. Vanskyhawk was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the Vanguard Fellowship and Rebecca Howard Circle.

She was born March 26, 1909, in Kramer, N.D., to Charles and Helen Garrison Boltz. She graduated from high school in Buchanan, Mich., in 1927. She married Clyde Vanskyhawk, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Rubye Graber, Plantation, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dian Sullivan; a brother, Charles Robert Boltz; and two sisters, Helen Ward and Marian Gilloolly.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church Chapel, 530 Guilford St., with Rev. David Arnold officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at the Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.

Marion C. Sprowl

Marion C. Sprowl, 67, Angola, a former resident of Huntington, died at 7:51 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Sprowl was a retired custodian at Huntington North High School. He attended the Good Shepherd United Brethren Church when he lived in Huntington and was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Sprowl was born April 16, 1934, in Sturgis, Mich., to James Clinton and Mary Meyer Sprowl. He married Elaine Marie Safford Aug. 21 ,1955, in Huntington; she died June 24, 1992. His second marriage was to Gloria Hertenstein, who survives in Angola.

Also surviving are three sons, Clyde Wayne Sprowl, Huntington, Marvin Lee Sprowl, Fort Wayne, and Tom Clinton Sprowl, Huntington; two stepsons, Steve Maxwell, Fort Wayne, and John Maxwell, Troutville, Va.; two grandsons; two stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Sara Pressler, Bronson, Mich., and Betty Fisher, Huntington.

Three brothers, Kenneth Dale Sprowl, Rex Sprowl, and Max Sprowl, and two sisters, Katherine Sprowl and Martha Shockome, preceded him in death.

Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hart Funeral Home. There will be additional calling one hour prior to the 10 a.m. services Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Larry C. Taylor and Rev. Al Soultz will officiate at the services. Burial will be at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Gerald D. Rosen

Gerald D. “Jerry” Rosen, 85, of Etna Avenue, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at his home.

Mr. Rosen was the owner of Rosen’s Heating & Plumbing in Huntington from 1951-73. He had worked in maintenance at IMCO from 1973 until retiring in 1982. He was also a life member of the Legion of the Moose in Huntington, serving two terms as governor of the Huntington Lodge. He owned and raced stock cars.

He was born Oct. 1, 1916, in Andrews to August and Hazel Parker Rosen. He graduated from Marion High School in 1934.

Mr. Rosen’s first marriage was to Betty Cooper on Aug. 7, 1936; she died in 1957. His second marriage was to Berniece Yaney in 1958; she died in 1978. His third marriage was to Willie Blackford on Dec. 31, 1988; she died July 17, 2000.

Survivors include a son, Larry Rosen, Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. James (Patti) Hutton, Wabash; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Carolyn Rosen, preceded him in death in 1957.

Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday, followed by Moose Lodge services at 8 p.m., at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Amos Albright officiating.

Interment will be at the Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion.

Preferred memorials are to Moose Heart and Moose Haven, in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Jerry Chaffin

Jerry Wayne Chaffin, 35, Dearborn Heights, Mich., died at 8:58 a.m. Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) in his home.

Originally from Huntington, Chaffin was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1998. He underwent several surgeries in failed attempts to remove the cancer over the past few years, including one innovative procedure that introduced a virus into his brain to try and eradicate the tumor.

Chaffin was self-employed for 10 years and worked at Don Massey Cadillac in Dearborn, Mich., for three years.

He was born on March 22, 1966, in Huntington to Jerry R. and Panda Lee Hardacre Chaffin. His father preceded him in death on April 20, 1996, while his mother survives. He married Lori Ann Perrine on March 10, 1986. His wife also survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Daniel Rodgers Chaffin and William Wayne Chaffin, both of Dearborn; a sister, Angela Marie Chaffin, Huntington; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Hardacre Sr., Huntington.

Chaffin’s family will hold an open house from 1-8 p.m. Saturday at his home, 4102 Cornell St., Dearborn Heights, Mich.

The Cremation Society of Michigan is in charge of all arrangements.

Phyllis J. Kreiger

Phyllis J. Kreiger, 74, 1168N-408W, died at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Kreiger graduated from the Lutheran School of Nursing, Fort Wayne, in 1949. She retired from nursing in 1962. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Circle, and she was also a member of the Women’s Club of Huntington.

She was born March 10, 1927, in Bristol, to Samuel and Ruth Enders Frybarger. She graduated from Converse High School in 1944 and attended Indiana University. She married Dean C. Kreiger in Huntington on July 10, 1959. He survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Steven (Nancy) Wigent, Fort Wayne; a sister, Mary Hefner, Decatur; and two grandchildren.

A son, Douglas Kreiger, preceded her in death.

Calling is from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Rev. David Arnold will officiate.

Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to Trinity United Methodist Church, the Huntington County Humane Society, or the Salvation Army, all in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.
