Sr. Laverne Berg P.H.J.C.

January 30, 1914 - December 8, 2002

Sister Laverne Berg, P.H.J.C., 88, died at 5:15 a.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2002, in the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Ind., where she had lived since her retirement in February of 1995.

Sister Berg was born in Ft. Wayne, Ind., on January 30, 1914, the daughter of Anthony and Loretta Wyss Berg.

She entered the convent on June 25, 1931 and professed her first vows on June 25, 1934.

An obstetrical nurse most of her career, Sister began her nursing vocation as a nurse's aide with the elderly in St. Mary’s Home in Carlyle, Ill. and later in St. Vincent’s Home in Quincy, Ill. Six years later, she became a student nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis, Ill., and after obtaining her RN continued working there as a staff nurse.

From 1946 through 1972, Sister was an obstetrical nurse and OB supervisor at three different hospitals. From 1946 to 1948, she served in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ashland, Wis.: from 1948 to 1962, she was at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis, Ill., and from 1963 to 1972 she worked in St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Ill.

From 1972 to 1974, sister Laverne was head nurse at the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson, Ind.

In 1974, Sister Laverne went to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Ind., where she was a staff nurse for 11 years, a patient registrar and receptionist for two more years and a volunteer for eight additional years until her retirement in 1995.

Sister Laverne is survived by five sisters: Marcella Becker, Hoagland, Ind.; Muriel Rossworm and Jane Ternet, both of New Haven, Ind.; Lucille Prouty, Roanoke, Ind.; and Doris Brager, Ft. Wayne, Ind. A brother, Maurice Berg, Hoagland, Ind., and several nieces and nephews survive as well.

Visitation will be held in the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Ind., on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, from 4:30 to 9 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. in the Kasper Home on Wednesday, December 11,2002. Father Edward Konerman, S.J. and Father William Kummer, St. Michael Catholic Church, Plymouth, Indiana, will officiate

Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Donaldson, Indiana.

Mary Jane Bishop

January 17, 1924 - January 26, 2003

Mary ‘Jane’ Bishop, 79, of 5490 Michigan Rd. , died, following an illness, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center , Plymouth , at 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2003 . She was a lifetime Plymouth resident.

Jane was born January 17, 1924 in Plymouth, the daughter of Wilber Cresswell Cochran and Amanda Alanna Craig Cochran. She attended Plymouth schools.

On September 20, 1941 she and Charles L. Bishop were married. Charles died on April 2, 1981.

A homemaker, Jane also had worked at New World Products, Plymouth and was a former manager of Pizza King and Old Dutch dairy store.

With great interest she had completed the documenting of her family’s genealogy. She enjoyed writing poetry, working jig saw puzzles and was a faithful listener to Bill and Kathy’s WTCA “What’s Your Opinion” morning show.

She crocheted, was an accomplished letter writer to friends and enjoyed her grandchildren’s many activities.

A former Campfire and Bluebird leader, she was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Plymouth Garden Club and the 1st Christian Church of Plymouth.

Jane is survived by three sons and a daughter: Wayne (Pam) Bishop, Argos; Stephen L. Bishop; Mark D. (Gail) Bishop; and Alanna L. (Larry) Heet, all of Plymouth.

Fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive as well.

A sister, Joan Ellinger, Plymouth, and Sue Hawley, a sister-in-law of Monticello, Ind., survives together with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers and two sisters. The brothers were: Bert, Leotis and Donovan Cochran. Her sisters were: Zenobie Scott and Julia Cochran.

Family services were held on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 , in the New Oakhill Chapel. The Rev. Tony Schneiders of the Walnut Church of the Brethren, Argos , officiated.

Interment was in New Oakhill Cemetery .

Gifts in Jane’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.

Orville L. Blessing

June 28, 1927 - July 10, 2002

Culver - Orville L. Blessing, 75, a Culver resident for the past 45 years, coming from Knox, Ind., died at 5:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2002, following a courageous four-year battle with cancer. Orville died at his residence, 17563 14B Road, Culver, under the tender and loving care of his family and the Marshall County Hospice.

Born in Chicago, Ill., Orville was the son of Adolf and Hattie Schwartz Blessing. He graduated from Hamlet High School and served two years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from Sept. 1950 until Sept. 1952.

On June 8, 1957, in Burr Oak, Ind., Orville and Charlotte Wallen were married.

He worked for Zechiel Farm Service in Culver for 25 years, then later was employed by Culver Academies as supervisor at the Academy post office. He retired in 1992.

Orville enjoyed camping and had traveled through most of the United States. He especially enjoyed the time he spent at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.

An avid reader of Christian literature, he was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, Plymouth.

Orville is survived by Charlotte, his loving wife of 45 years, and by three daughters and their husbands and ten grandchildren.

His daughters are: Shara and Rick Spicer, LaPorte, Ind., Marcia and Russ Madsen, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Nancy and John Kruyer, Argos, Ind.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Blessing.

Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2002, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Faith Baptist Church, 12987 Peach Rd., Plymouth. The Rev. Dr. Paul Loder will officiate.

military graveside honors will be accorded to Orville by the Plymouth V.F.W. #1162.

Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Ind.

Memorial gifts in Orville’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.

Henry C. Bollhoefer

May 5, 1926 - May 31, 2001

Henry C. “Hank” Bollhoefer, 75, 4821 French St., Tyner, Ind., an area resident since he was discharged from the Marines, has died. Hank passed away in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, at 2:34 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001.

Born the son of Mark Lester and Pearl L. McDaniel Bollhoefer on May 5, 1926, in Huntington County, Ind., Hank attended Jefferson High School in Huntington.

He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II until February of 1946.

On Sept. 14, 1947, in Argos, Hank and Virginia Jean Grossman were married.

Hank was a self-employed mechanic for 33 years, from 1960 to 1993. He had also worked for eight years as a John Deere mechanic for James Morrissey.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking and was a collector of miniature John Deere tractors.

A member of the Blissville Church of the Brethren, Hank had served on the Tyner Volunteer Fire Department. He was a Marshall County 4-H leader for a number of years and a member of the Marshall County Fair Board, serving as president in 1978.

Hank is survived by Virginia, his wife of nearly 54 years, a daughter, a son and their families.

His daughter is Linda and her husband, Douglas Cannan, Brandon, Florida. His son and daughter-in-law is David and Emilia Bollhoefer, Tyner, Ind.

Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild, also survive together with a brother, Phillip and Ardille Bollhoefer, Rancho Cordova, Calif., and a sister; Alta Keifer, Huntington, Ind. A step-sister and step-brother, both living in Texas, survive as well; they are Nina and Reever Morris and Harold Reding.

Hank was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Margaret Decker, three brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call on the family on Monday, June 4, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services for Hank will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, 6250 Spruce Trail, Plymouth. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the Blissville Church, will officiate.

A military service, conducted by the Plymouth V.F.W., Post 1162, will honor Hank at the graveside in Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind.

Memorials in Hank’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Virginia J. Bollhoefer

October 22, 1929 - July 24, 2001

Virginia J. Bollhoefer, 71, of 4821 French St., Tyner, Ind., died at 5:56 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Virginia, a Marshall County resident all of her life, died in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth, following a brief illness.

She was born in Argos, the daughter of Lott E. and Corene Hagenbush Grossman on Oct. 22, 1929, and was a 1947 graduate of Argos High School.

On September 14, 1947, in Argos, Virginia and Henry C. Bollhoefer were married. Henry died less than two months ago, on May 31, 2001.

Virginia had been a bus driver for John Glenn schools for 23 years. She also had worked in the kitchen at Swan Lake Golf Club for 13 years. She worked with her husband, Hank, in his repair business as well.

Active in the Marshall County 4-H program, she was a leader for over 32 years and a 40 year member of the Home Extension club. She was a member for over two decades of both the Polk Township’s Fireman’s Auxiliary and the Walkerton Community Pantry.

She liked to crochet and was an avid gardener. Virginia enjoyed canning the vegetables she grew and showing her flowers. She also liked to walk and did some hiking.

Virginia is survived by a daughter, Linda and Douglas Cannan, Brandon, Fla., and a son, David and Emilia Bollhoefer, Tyner, Ind.

Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild also survive.

In addition two sisters, Leona and Jerome Young, Niles, Mich., and Donna and Robert Loop, LaPorte, Ind., survive, together with three brothers: LeRoy and Donnabelle Grossman, Talma, Ind., Lowell and Bonnie Grossman and Merle and Dorothy Grossman, all of Argos, Ind.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hank, a daughter, Margaret Decker, four brothers and one sister.

Visitation with the family will be at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Friday, July 27, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2001, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, 6250 Spruce Trail, Plymouth, where Virginia was a member for more than 40 years. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind.

Memorial gifts in Virginia’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Cancer Association or the Blissville Church of the Brethren.

Gerald D. Bonnell

October 7, 1922 - December 25, 2001

Gerald D. “ Blondie” Bonnell, 79, 905 E. Berkley St., Plymouth, Ind., formerly of Star City and Culver, Ind., died of natural causes in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001.

Born in Pulaski County, Ind., the son of Serin and Bertha Irene Marvin Bonnell, on Oct. 7, 1922, Blondie attended Fairview School in Pulaski County.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Culver Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On March 15, 1946, in Rochester, Ind., Blondie and Dolly A. Nitzschke were married.

He was a self-employed building contractor, an avid fisherman and enjoyed and followed all Notre Dame sports.

In addition to Dolly, his wife of 55 years, Blondie is survived by a daughter and son and their spouses. They are: Patricia Ann and Gary Rogers, Rochester, Ind., and Steven Paul and Linda Bonnell, Brandon, Fla.

Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive together with a brother, Arnold and Florine Bonnell, Mishawaka, Ind.

Blondie was preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Dennis Jay and Gerald Lee Bonnell and three brothers: Kenneth, Cecil, and Keith Bonnell and two sisters, Sylvia Balder and Marge Killenberger.

Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, are handling the arrangements. There will be no visitation and no services.

Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.

Memorials in Blondie’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Cancer Society.
