Dorothy M. Lohse
February 2, 1922 - April 26, 2001
PLYMOUTH, IND. – Dorothy M. Lohse, 79, a resident of Walnut Creek Care Facility, Plymouth, the past two years, died of natural causes at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001 in the company of her family at the care facility.
Dorothy had resided at 14027 12th Rd. Plymouth, coming from Hammond, Ind. with her husband in 1947. Born February 2, 1922 in Hammond, the daughter of Shirley Tratebas and Margaret Klemsman Tratebas, Dorothy graduated from Hammond Tech School.
On August 23, 1941, in Hammond, she was married to Wilbert H. Lohse. Wilbert died on October 10, 1993.
Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her family and living a Christian life. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran church of Plymouth since 1947. One favorite personal past time was embroidery.
Survivors include three sons and one daughter. Her sons and daughter-in-laws are; Clyde J. and Barbara Lohse of Argos, Ind. James W. and Carol Lohse of Leesburg, Ind. and David L. and Carol Lohse of Plymouth. Her daughter Shirley M. Hardesty resides in Huntington, Ind. Eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and a son-in-law, Lloyd Hardesty.
Visitation with her family will be on Friday, April 27, 2001, from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Johnson – Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth and on Saturday, April 28, 2001 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 1314 N. Michigan St., Plymouth where services will be held at 11 a.m. Pastor Steven Resner and Vicar Robert Bower will officiate.
Burial will be in the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
David Alan Mahler
May 31, 1968 - April 17, 2002
David Alan Mahler, 33, died, following an illness, at 11:32 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 , in the loving presence of his family, at home, 19022 Queen Road , Culver , Ind. He was a lifetime Culver resident.
David was born in Plymouth on May 31, 1968. He was born the son of Alan M. and Marlene K. Morrison Mahler. He graduated from Culver Jr./ Sr. High School with the class of 1986 and attended Blackhawk College in Kewanee , Ill.
On Jan. 3, 1987 , David and Pamela Kay Birchmeier were married in Plymouth .
He worked as a hog buyer for Morrison Livestock for 13 years and, since 1999, as a carpenter with Bennett’s General Contracting Co. in Culver.
Since he was a young boy, David showed cattle for the 4-H Club and participated in the National 4-H shows. He enjoyed his children’s 4H activities, hunting and car shows of all kinds, especially the vintage variety.
A 4-H leader for 14 years, David, was a member of Culver Young Farmers, the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Lodge #373, and a lifetime member of the American Angus Association. He was of the Methodist faith.
David is survived by his wife, Pamela, and their two daughters: Ashley Ann, 14, a freshman at Culver Jr./Sr. High and Makaela Kay, 7, a first grader at Culver Elementary.
His mother, Marlene Mahler, Culver, and his father, Alan M. Mahler, also of Culver, survive as well, together with a brother, Chad Raymon Mahler, of Yorkville , Ill. , and his fiancée, Natalie McGrew.
David’s maternal grandparents, Raymond and Esther Morrison, Culver, Leota Dickey, maternal great-grandmother and James Martin Mahler, paternal grandfather and his wife, Linda, also survive.
Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins survive, together with Pattie Birchmeier, David’s mother-in-law, of Plymouth .
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Ruth Mahler and his father-in-law, Richard Birchmeier.
Visitation will be Friday, April 19, 2002 , from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. , Plymouth . The Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Lodge will provide a memorial service at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
David’s funeral services will be in the funeral home on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Sam Boys will officiate.
Burial will be in the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Cemetery

Clara M. Mangun
January 12, 1921 - November 29, 2001
Clara M. Mangun, 80, a Plymouth resident most of her life, formerly of W. Jackson St., died at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. Clara, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, 600 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, for the past two years, died at the nursing home following an extended illness.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1921, in Plymouth, the daughter of John M. and Mary Ellen Linderman Hill. She attended area schools.
On Dec. 3, 1940, in Knox, Clara and Robert W. Mangun were married. Robert died on Aug. 31, 1993.
A homemaker, Clara enjoyed the time spent raising her family. She did handwork, especially embroidery and quilting. She appreciated the outdoors, flower and vegetable gardening.
Raised in the First Baptist faith, she had an extensive collection of quotes and inspirational thoughts. A stay-to-home person, Clara enjoyed 50s’ and old “bluegrass” music and working jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by two sons and three daughters, 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Her children are: Donald W. and Maria Mangun, Milford, Ind., Paul G. and Stephanie Mangun, Mentone, Ind., Rosemary Patrick and Pamela I. Melton, both of Plymouth and Wanda M. and Gorman Patrick, Michigan City, Ind.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Cindy, and two sons, Eugene and Ralph Mangun. A grandson, Mike Mangun and a great-grandson, Bobby Jo Patrick have also died, together with two brothers, Ralph and Marion Hill.
Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Clara will be officiated by Rev. Tom Padberg, Chaplain for the Marshall County Hospice, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Dorothy M. Marks
May 20, 1922 - August 24, 2001
Dorothy M. Marks, 79, 4076 Lipton St., Bremen, Ind., died of natural causes at the Lu Ann Nursing Home, Nappanee, Ind., at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2001.
A longtime Marshall County resident, having grown up in Battle Creek, Mich. She was born on May 20, 1922 in Lakeview, Mich. near Battle Creek and adopted as the daughter of Harry and Alice Barrett. Dorothy graduated from Battle Creek High School. From there she attended Business School and became a secretary.
On July 11, 1942, Dorothy and Glen A. Marks were married in Bryan, Ohio. Glen died on November 21, 1997.
Dorothy first worked at the Lone Star Boat Company of Bremen. She was also employed at Berkey Auto Parts in Plymouth and at one time was a secretary for the Costello Auction Service. She retired in 1988 from AAA Construction, Bremen, where she assisted in disaster clean up.
She bowled with several Bremen and LaPaz bowling leagues and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and doing embroidery work. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her trips to Florida. Dorothy adored cats and had a collection of ceramic felines.
She was a member of the Bremen V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, # 8972.
Dorothy is survived by two sons and a daughter. Her sons are Dale A. and Lyla Marks, Lake of the Woods, and Lyle D. and Sue Marks, South Bend. Her daughter is Marie S. and Dale Holderman, Bremen.
Twelve grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, together with several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son, Nelson L. Marks, who died in 1994.
Visitation with Dorothy’s family will be on Monday, August 27, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Marlin Debban, of the Trinity Assembly of God, Lakeville, where Dorothy attended services, will officiate.
Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Dorothy’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Alice E. Martin
July 6, 1929 - April 12, 2001
PLYMOUTH, IND. – Described by her family as “Little, but mighty”, Alice E. Martin, 71, who has bravely fought cancer since 1989, died at her residence, 8225 King Road, Plymouth, on Thursday, April 12, 2001. Alice died at 3:40 a.m., in the devoted and loving care of her family and the Marshall County Hospice.
A Marshall County resident since 1949, coming from Washington, Ind., Alice and her family has resided on King Road the past 33 years.
Born the daughter of Earl P. and Cecelia B. Gootee Walker on July 6, 1929, in Washington, Ind., Alice attended Epsom and Alfordsville, Ind., schools, graduating in 1947.
On April 17, 1948, in St. Patrick’s Church in Corning, Ind., Alice and Charles D. Martin were married.
A busy, energetic person with a great sense of humor, she had worked as a Sears sales clerk and as a cashier at Gas America. She was also a librarian at Lincoln Jr. High school, retiring in 1985.
Her grandchildren were all very dear to Alice. She especially enjoyed taking walks with them. She made it a point to be present for almost all of their activities. Alice was fond of needlepoint work and collected handmade quilts.
Alice enjoyed traveling, she and her husband visited Germany twice and spent many winters in Texas.
An excellent golfer, she enjoyed playing the game with her husband and family, many times outranking them all. She was the Northern Indiana Director of The Golf Card for Seniors. At Plymouth Rock she was the A Flight Champion known for her long drives and was a popular choice in scramble play.
A member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Alice was past-president and a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Harvest House. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Plymouth Lodge 1355 and the NIPSCO Golf League.
Alice and her husband, Charles, would have celebrated their 53rd anniversary on Tuesday, April 17th. Charles survives her death together with their four sons and two daughters.
The surviving families are: Richard D. and Sherri Martin and children, Shannda, Chad and Jessica, all of Plymouth,
Charles E. and Cathy Martin and their daughters, Pamela, Erica and Sarah, of Lakeville, Clifford L. Martin and his daughter, Heather, of Port St. Lucie, Florida. William J. and JoAnn Martin and children, Alex and Lauren, all of Bourbon, Mary Anne and Steve Hepler and sons, Nicholas and Anthony Levechio, all of Bourbon, and Susan K. and William Allen and their sons, Cord and Jace, all of Plymouth. Alice was also able to enjoy her great-granddaughter, Taylor Saxon.
Two brothers, Harold and his wife, Louise Walker, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Ambrose and Mary Ruth Walker, Washington, Ind., and a sister, Mary and Harold Seal of Cannelburg, Ind., several nieces and nephews also survive.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, one brother LeRoy Walker and a sister Carol Walker.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday, April 14, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Rosary Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2001, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 625 N. Center St., Plymouth. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Plymouth.
