Irene M. Snook

July 29, 1916 - October 14, 2001

Lifetime Plymouth resident, Irene M. Snook, 85, died at her residence, 11540 Lincolnway East, Plymouth, in the company of her family at 9:38 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2001. Irene had battled a cancer-related illness since 1996.

Born in Plymouth, the daughter of George H. and Martha E. Littman Towle on July 29, 1916, she grew up in West Township and received her education at West High School.

On January 4, 1936, in Culver, Ind., Irene and John V. Snook were married. John preceded her in death on June 15, 1995.

For 19 years, until 1972, she and her husband were the owners and operators of the Plymouth Dairy Queen.

Irene enjoyed flower gardening, shopping, visiting and working crossword puzzles. Her social life was primarily time spent with her family and her church.

She was a member of the Central Church of Christ for many years.

Irene is survived by two sons and a daughter. Her sons are Robert V. Snook, Lynnville, Tenn., and John E. Snook, Ft. Wayne. Her daughter is Janet L. and Ed Ousnamer, Tampa, Florida.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, together with Ida Wagoner, a sister, and Pat and Bill Kyser, a sister and brother-in-law, all of Plymouth. Several nieces and nephews survive as well.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and by Jake Snook, a great grandson. Two sisters, Dorothy Comford and Florence Anderson and three brothers, Howard, George, and Harold Towle, have also died.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 17, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Thursday, October 18, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. Brother Byron Henbest, of Bowling Green, Ky., will officiate.

Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery.

Preferred memorial gifts in Irene’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.

Ray L. Snyder

October 30, 1920 - June 17, 2001

Ray L. Snyder, 80, a lifetime LaPaz resident and known to many in the area as “Snyder the Decorator”, has died. Ray, who resided at 13010 W. 1st. Road, died following an illness at the home of his daughter Pam, in Bristol, Ind.

Born on October 30, 1920 in Lapaz, Ind., he was the son of Solomon F. and Cacelia M. Boone Snyder. He attended Lapaz schools and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines where he received the Bronze Star.

At the early age of sixteen, Ray joined his father in the painting and decorating business which he continued until his retirement in 1998. Ray was known for quality work and having a friendly disposition.

On February 11, 1950, in South Bend, he and Marcia L. Hostetler, were married. Marcia died suddenly, one year ago, May 10, 2000.

Ray took pride in helping others by fixing and repairing things, sometimes a challenge, but eager to try. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking and reading.

A member of the Nappanee First Church of God, where he was involved in the W.H.O. ‘We Help Others’, adult Bible class. And had also served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a former member of the LaPaz First Community Church of God.

He is survived by one son, Dean R. and Theresa Snyder of Defiance, Ohio, two daughters, Pam J. and Terry Garber of Bristol and Deb K. Snyder of Goshen. Eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive along with one sister and two brothers. They are, Betty and Rev. Hilton Bryant of Hammond, Roy and Lorena Snyder of Plymouth and Paul and Eyvonne Snyder of Bremen. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Ray was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Fay, a twin to son Dean, his parents, spouse and two brothers, Leo and Don Snyder.

Friends may visit with the family today Tuesday, June 19, from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Johnson – Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth.

Funeral services for Ray will be conducted by the Rev. Emeritus Robert Fields, of the Nappanee First Church of God and family friend Bro. Dave VanCuren. The funeral will be held in the LaPaz First Community Church of God, 601 S. Michigan St. LaPaz at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, where friends may call one hour prior services.

Burial will be in Fair Cemetery, northwest of LaPaz. military graveside services will be accorded Ray by the Lapaz American Legion Post 385.

Memorial gifts in Ray’s memory may be made to the Nappanee First Church of God, LaPaz First Community Church of God or the Goshen Hospital Community Hospice Program.

Richard N. Spaid

August 1, 1927 - February 20, 2002

Lifetime area resident, Richard N. Spaid, 74, 13274 W. 5th Road, Plymouth, died, following an extended illness, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

Richard was born in LaPaz, Ind., on Aug. 1, 1927. He was the son of Alva L. and Ruth C. Miller Spaid Woolley of Plymouth. He attended West township school.

During World War II, Richard served two years in both the United States Army and the Merchant Marines. He was a 35-year member of the American Legion, Post 385 at LaPaz, the Voiture 40 / 8, Marshall County Post 1511, and the Bremen V.F.W. Post 8972 for 40 years.

On April 16, 1955, at Koontz Lake, Richard and Violet M. DuVall were married.

He was a heavy equipment operator for 29 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Operating/Engineers Local 150.

Richard enjoyed stock car racing, NASCAR events and watching his grandchildren in their sporting activities.

He is survived by his wife Violet of 46 years and his mother, Ruth C. Woolley of Plymouth.

His children and their families are three daughters; Dixie and Alan Geddes and their children, Misty and Joyce of Washington state; Linda J. and George Truhler and their son, Ronald, of Walkerton; Kathy L. Alexander and her children, Christopher, Jessica, Samuel and Joely of Plymouth.

Two sons also survive. They are: Garry L. Spaid and his children, Renee, Scott and Joshua of Florida, and Larry A. Spaid, his daughter, Danielle and his fiancee, Sharon, Plymouth.

Seven great-grandchildren also survive together with three sisters and four brothers. They are: Donna and Joe Paone and Nona and John Kuhn, all of Sebring, Florida; and Connie and Joe Castro, Plymouth. His brothers are: Earl and Cris Spaid, Elkhart, Russell and Eva Spaid, Plymouth, Louis and Kristy Spaid, Wheatland, Wyoming and David and Kristine Spaid, Linden, Tenn.

Four step-sisters and five step-brothers also survive together with numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, his step-father, Arthur Woolley and Mickey, an infant sister and a step sister.

Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A 40 / 8 Memorial service will be held at 8 p.m., following visitation.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Morris Park Cemetery, west of LaPaz, where military honors will be accorded Richard by the LaPaz American Legion Post 385.

Linda G. Speirs

April 5, 1955 - June 2, 2002

Linda G. Speirs, 47, lovingly called “Cookie,” by her family and many friends, died, following a lupus related illness, at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2002, in St. Margaret’s Hospital, Hammond, Ind.

Born on April 5, 1955, in Houston, Scotland, Cookie was the beloved daughter of Thomas and Gwen Monroe Speirs. The family came to the United States from Scotland in 1960 and lived in the Plymouth area most of her life.

Cookie attended T.F. North School in Calumet City, Illinois.

A homemaker, she enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies and talking to her friends on the C.B. radio using her handle of “Cookie.” An avid White-Sox fan, she enjoyed gardening and outside work.

Cookie is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Buffy Speirs and her three grandchildren, Levi, Cassidy and Tyler Speirs, all of Plymouth.

Also surviving are her parents, Thomas and Gwen Speirs, Plymouth, a paternal grandmother, Christina Speirs, Scotland, and a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Bernie Speirs, Cessna Park, Ill.

Michael Bobby, Cookie’s former husband and loving companion and Dorothy Bobby, her former mother-in-law and devoted friend, both of Plymouth, also survive, together with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call to share their memories with her family from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the New Oakhill Chapel at the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Charles Krieg, will follow visitation at 3 p.m., June 6, 2002, in New Oakhill Chapel. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in Cookie’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Leroy R. Sporner

October 26, 1938 - November 8, 2001

Leroy R. “Lee” Sporner, 63, died of natural causes at his home, 17329 9th Rd., Plymouth, on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001. Lee had lived there since 1983, coming from German Valley, Ill.

He was born on Oct. 26., 1938, in St. Mary’s, Penn., the son of Joseph A. and Emma L. Cowan Sporner. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary in Pennsylvania and in Plymouth St. Michael’s and West High School after which he joined the United States Navy.

Farming was in the Sporner Blood and Lee appreciated the solitude Marshall County offered him. A dairy farmer since 1983, Lee had previously drove truck as a Teamster for Mayflower & Beacon Van Lines for over 20 years in the moving industry.

He enjoyed woodworking and, was a radio Cub fan.

Lee is survived by two sisters: Bernece M. Pomeroy South Bend, and Viola M. Sporner, Warsaw. A sister-in-law in Florida, Patricia A. Sporner also survives together with many nieces and nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents and by six brothers: Robert, Melvin, Raymond, Kenneth, Leonard and Carl Sporner.

Visitation with the family will be at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 from 12 to 2 p.m.

Funeral services will follow in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church of which Lee was a member, will officiate.

V.F.W. Post 1162 will provide military honors at the New Oakhill Cemetery graveside.

Gifts in memory of Lee may be made to the Mission 2000 of St. Michael’s Church.
