John Cletus White
January 23, 1911 - October 13, 2001
John Cletus White, 90, a compassionate, thoughtful and well-respected man, died of natural causes at 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001. John, who formerly lived at 16290 Pretty Lake Road, Plymouth, died in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth.
Born on January 23, 1911, in Marshall County, John was the son of John A. and Inez Dreitzler White. He graduated from Argos High School with the class of 1929.
On October 20, 1935, in the First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth, John and Savannah Barkley were married. Savannah preceded her husband in death on June 18, 1996.
Both the Whites were very active in their church, the First Presbyterian. They served in many capacities. He was a member of the Presbyterian Session and active in church affairs for over half-a-century.
John had a long and illustrious career in the dairy products business. He was associated with Schlosser Brothers, Plymouth, for 31 years as assistant General Manager, Secretary and Vice-president of the company. For 22 years he was employed by Hawthorn Mellody, successor of Schlosser Brothers, as General Manager, President of the Indiana-Michigan Division and as Corporate Vice-president. He retired in 1980.
In 1969, he served as President of the Indiana State Dairy Products Association and on the Dairy Advisory Board of the State of Indiana’s Board of Health.
That same year, John went to Brazil as a member of a governmental committee commissioned to assist South American countries to develop their dairy industry.
He also had served 24 years on the Board of Directors of the Bowen Center and was elected president of the board twice.
John White also served seven years on the Plymouth Community School Board and held the office of president for two terms.
He was Past President of the Kiwanis Club, a Past Master of the Argos Masonic Lodge and Secretary of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.
A veteran of World War II, John served in the United States Navy as a communications expert in the Pacific Theater in the spring of 1944.
John is survived by two daughters and one son: Judy B Albert of Bettendorf, Iowa, Beverley J. and Richard Turner of Crawfordsville, Ind., and John B. and Nola White of Lima, Ohio.
In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren: John H. and Fawn Turner, Eau Claire, Wis., David W. and Sally Turner, Crawfordsville, Robert E. and Beth Turner of Waynetown, Ind., Marcia L. and Brian Kendall of Indianapolis, Ind., Savannah C. and Ron Boege of Tallahassee, Fla., John B. and Cindy White of Cedarville, Ohio and Stephen D. and Nicole White of Columbus, Ohio.
Other survivors include 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Turner. Two brothers, Samuel White, who died in Marshall County in 1938, and Paul White, who died in Claire, Mich. in 1976, and one sister, Bernita White Goodyear, who died in Denver, Colo., preceded him in death also.
Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, in the First Presbyterian Church, 401 N. Walnut Street, Plymouth.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., following visitation, by two of John’s grandsons: John B. White and Pastor Robert E. Turner.
Preferred memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth, to the Marshall County Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jerry L. Wyman
September 9, 1931 - August 15, 2001
Local businessman Jerry L. Wyman, 69, who lived at 10139 Queen Rd., Plymouth, for the past 26 years has died. A 12-year resident of Culver and formerly of Warsaw, Jerry died following an illness, at 10:53 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2001, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
Jerry was born in Warsaw, Ind., on Sept. 9, 1931. He was the son of Herbert and Theresa Hubler Wyman. He graduated from Warsaw High School in the class of 1950 and, later, from insurance training school.
From 1951 to 1955, he served in the United States Navy on submarine duty. He was a member of the Warsaw American Legion.
On Sept. 5, 1953, in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Plymouth, Jerry and Beverly J. Ruff were married.
He was employed in the insurance offices of the State Exchange Banks in Culver and Plymouth and later the Valley American Bank in Plymouth. He retired from the Morrow Insurance Agency in 1997.
He loved to fish and would go anytime, to any place. An Indiana University and Notre Dame fan, he enjoyed watching their sporting events.
He never got enough golf. An excellent player, Jerry played as often as he could and was a valued member of the Plymouth Country Club. He often walked the course outside his door, barefooted. “ I love the feel of the grass and the earth on my feet,” he said. “ It is a communion with nature.”
He attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and was a member of that faith for over 44 years. He also was a member of the Plymouth Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. A man of strong convictions, Jerry served the community in many ways and was a stalwart supporter of many worthwhile organizations, serving on their boards and committees.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Bev, and by a daughter, Kimberly K. Miller and by a son, Thad W. Wyman, all of Plymouth. A granddaughter, Courtney and Lauran Herrimann, also survives.
Two brothers, Tom Wyman, Warsaw, and William Wyman, North Providence, R.I., Loretta Ruff, his mother-in-law and several nieces and nephews survive as well.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and by Sally Wyman, a sister.
A Memorial Mass to honor Jerry’s life will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2001, in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 412 N. Center St., Plymouth. Father John Schramm, pastor of St. Thomas, will officiate.
Immediately following the Mass a reception for family and friends will be held in Bishop Sheridan Hall adjacent to the church.
Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Devon Lee Yockey
March 31, 1947 - April 16, 2002
Devon Lee Yockey, 55, of 309 Kingston Dr., a Plymouth resident most of his life, died, following an extended illness, at 10:03 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind.
Devon was born in Plymouth on March 31, 1947, the son of Elwyn Lamar and Irene Elaine Ritchey Yockey. A 1965 graduate of Plymouth High School, he earned a B.S. in Music at Indiana State University and a Master’s degree in Music from Miami University, Miami, Ohio, where he was a Graduate Assistant.
During college he was a sales representative for Selmer Clarinet. He taught marching and symphonic band at Zanesville, Ohio, and later, managed an L&K restaurant both in Ohio and in Plymouth, Ind.
Devon directed the LaVille-North Liberty Community choir for 13 years. He was Choir Director both at the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church and the Sumption Prairie Methodist Church.
For a number of years, Devon was a sales representative for Shirk’s Music in Mishawaka and Hedman’s Music in South Bend and Elkhart.
Always involved in music, Devon was a member of the Sojourner’s Quartet. For years, he was the coordinator of the bands for the South Bend Ethnic Festival and had also assisted with the bands at the Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
Devon is survived by his mother, Irene E. Yockey and by his sister and her husband, Rita Mae and Larry Thornton, all of Plymouth.
Three nieces, also of Plymouth, survive as well. They are: Jessica and James Clements and their daughter, Kiara; Jennifer Thornton; and Julie and Jason White and their son Rilee.
Devon was preceded in death by his father, Elwyn and a sister, Beverly Ann Yockey, and a niece, JoAnn Thornton.
Visitation with Devon’s family will be on Friday, April 19, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, April 20th.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. John Perkinson, pastor of the Shiloh Wesleyan Church where Devon was a member, will be in the church, 10532 4 B Road, Plymouth, on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Devon’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes. Foundation or the Shiloh Wesleyan Church.
Jane E. Young
March 18, 1929- July 11, 2001
Jane E. Young, 72, 1013 Highland Ct., a resident of Plymouth, Ind. for the past 41 years died, following an illness, at 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2001. Jane died in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
Keith Nash, a "forever friend" of forty years, of Jane and Bob Young, said, " Jane was a special person. Very generous and very kind and thoughtful of other people.
"She had a terrific sense of humor and even though she had been ill, she never lost it."
Born in Canton, Ohio, on March 18, 1929, Jane was the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Reiber. She was a 1947 graduate of Redford High School in Detroit, Michigan. She worked as a telephone operator for several years after her graduation.
On October 25, 1952, in Detroit, Jane and Robert Young were married. Bob died on June 13, 1992.
Jane was a vivacious and active woman. Accomplished in sports, she was an avid golfer and fierce competitor. She and her husband, Bob, co-founder of Young Door Company, Plymouth. Now operating as Doorcraft of Indiana a Jeld-Wen Corporation.
A member of Tri-Kappa, she was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Plymouth.
Jane is survived by a daughter and a son: Nancy Harper, Chelsea, Michigan, and Robert S. and Trish Young, Bloomington, Ind.
A devoted and doting grandmother she is also survived by two grandsons, Andrew Robert, 9, and Alexander James, 7.
A sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Richard Corsette, Grayling, Michigan, also survive.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 401 N. Walnut St., Plymouth, Ind. The Rev. Les Johnson will officiate. Arrangement by the Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth.
Memorials in Jane's memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Justine D. Ziegler
April 13, 1928 - September 10, 2001
Longtime Plymouth educator and resident, Justine D. Ziegler, 4839 Michigan Rd., died in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, of a cancer-related illness at 7:35 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2001. She was 73 years old.
Justine was born in Mishawaka on April 13, 1928, the daughter of Edward J. and Elizabeth D. Huemmer Harris.
She graduated from LaPaz High School with the class of 1945 and from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a Bachelor of Science in 1949. She was an English major and earned her teacher’s certification.
On August 25, 1951, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth, Justine and Charles A. Ziegler were married. Charles died on December 7, 1979.
Justine first taught English for one year in Victor, Colorado and then returning to this area, she taught at the LaPaz Elementary school. For the next 20 years she fulfilled her career as she served on the faculty of Plymouth High School, from 1966 to 1988. After retirement she was a volunteer tutor, teaching English as a second language.
She enjoyed reading and had a deep appreciation of classical music. A nature lover, she was a bird watcher. She liked to shop and eat out at interesting places. An active person, she was involved with the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Justine is survived by four sons and a daughter. They are: Dr. Charles E. and Ziegler, and his wife Janna, Louisville, Ky., Michael G. and Sandra Ziegler, Knox, Ind., Stephen P. Ziegler, Deptford, N.J., and James P. Ziegler, and his wife Katie, Waukesha, Wis. Her daughter is Christine G. Ziegler of Bedford, Ind.
Four grandchildren also survive. They are: Alan, Angela, Aaron and Jennifer Ziegler.
Three sisters survive as well. They are Jeanette and Jack Knight, Houston, Texas, Sherri Garcia, Germany, Karlin and Harry Fleming, Stafford, Virginia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Justine was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and a sister, Rita Ziegler.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
The Mass of Christian Burial will take place in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 625 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Thursday, September 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s, will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery.
