Marvin L. Spear

April 25, 1905 - January 3, 2000
Marvin L. spear, 94, of Monticello died Monday, January 3, 2000 at Twin Lakes Village.

He was born April 25, 1905, in Tompkinsville, Ky., to James M and Lucy H. Rush Spear. He married Jessie M. Seward on October 27, 1925 in Brookston. She died June 4, 1998.

He had lived in White County since 1920. He farmed most of his life, retiring in 1973.

He was a member of the Guernsey Church of the Brethren.

He is survived by two sons Robert D. Spear of Monon and Melvin D. Spear of Mexico IN and three daughters; Mrs Charles "Opal" Rayburn of Rensselaer, Mrs Jerry "Shirley" Bunnell and Mary Lou Mohier of Monticello and one brother Charles R. Spear of Monticello.

He had 16 grandchildren. 22 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Three brothers, two sisters, one son and two daughters preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 6th at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, with Rev. Dana Hood officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Bedford Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Bedford Cemetery Association.

Rev. George James Thomson

October 31, 1914 - July 8, 1995
Rev. George James Thomson, Monon, died Saturday, July 8, at home. He had been in ill health for the past month.

He was born Oct. 31, 1914, in Lockerbie, Scotland, to Thomas and Helen Copeland Thomson. His first marriage was to Doris Hamme and she died in 1964. His second marriage was Jan. 8, 1966, in Palos Hills, Ill., to Josephine Stoube and she survives.

He served five years with the Detroit Police Department as the lieutenant of vice. He became a minister in 1937. He pastored churches in Ferndale, Mich.; Chicago, Palos Hills, Ill.; Chicago Ridge, Ill.; Buffalo Church of the Brethren and Goodland, Indiana.

He conducted a weekly bible study class for 10 years at the Monticello Healthcare Center and Tioga Pines Living Center.

He served in the Air Tech Services Command during World War II as a civilian testing airplane engines.

He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1937. He attended the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He graduated in 1948, from the Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.

He moved to Monon in 1982 and was a member of the IBEW, Chicago.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Thomas of Kimberly, Wis.; Timothy of West Newbury, Mass and James of Coleman, Wis.; a daughter, Maralee Thomson-Yood of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Frances Vanscoyk of Monticello; a brother-in-law, Rev. Joseph Stoube of Dyersville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandsons. One brother preceded him in death.

The funeral was today at the Monon United Methodist Church, pastor Donald Newman officiating. Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, was in charge of the services.

Burial was at the Buffalo Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Gideon Bible Program or the New Tribes Mission.

Bonnie I. Wheeldon

November 26, 1910 to October 6, 1987
Bonnie I. Wheeldon, 76, Monon, died at White Co. Memorial Hospital at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6. She had been in ill health for the past 3 years.

She was born Nov. 26, 1910 in Chalmers, Ind., the daughter of Thomas and Salina Butler Harris. She married Virgil Wheeldon, May 15, 1929. He died Nov. 22, 1975.

A housewife and lifetime resident of Monon area, she was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include 5 sons; Dave Wheeldon, Lafayette; Virgil Wheeldon, Monon; Wayne Wheeldon; Monticello; Theodore Wheeldon, Kentland and John Wheeldon, Brookston and one daughter Sylvia Bringhurst, Flora. Two sisters, Mary Neil Klink, Chalmers and Alice Horsewood, Monticello, also survive along with 15 grand and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 today at the Stewart-Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon, with Rev John Hall officiating. Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery.

John William Wortley

July 5, 1922 to January 13, 2000
John William Wortley, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 13, at Lafayette Home Hospital.

He was born July 5, 1922 to George and Lillian A. Brown Wortley, in Logansport.

He was married Feb. 2, 1975, to Jacqueline Jacoby at Rensselaer. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1942-45.

He worked at Bryan Manufacturing, Monticello for 10 years and was employed with the Penn Central Railroad out of Logansport for 20 years. He also had been employed at the White County Lakeview Home for several years.

He had resided in Monon since 1992, coming from Monticello.

He attended the Monon First Baptist Church.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and AMVETS, all of Monticello and the Monon Eagles Lodge.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John "Connie" Tetzloff of Monon; sons, Harry Widner of Logansport, Philip Widner of Idaville and Brad Widner of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Rice of Wabash; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A brother, sister and daughter are deceased.

Funeral services were Monday at the Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. Steve Birch officiating.

Burial with full military rites was conducted at the Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Memorials may be given to the Monon First Responders.

Edna L. Young

December 30, 1916 to October 28, 1999
Edna L. Young, 82, Buffalo, died Thursday, October 28, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.

She was born Dec. 30, 1916, to William Clinton and Emma Jane Cape Frazier in Indianapolis. She was married Feb. 9,1966, to Harris R. Young, in Lebanon. He died August 13, 1985.

She had lived in Indianapolis most of her life. She was a production inspector for Mallory, retiring in 1966 after 26 1/2 years.

She was a member of the Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Surviving are a stepson, Michael Young of Seattle, Washington and several nieces and nephews.

A brother and sister are deceased.

Funeral services were Sunday at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. Alvin Rockey officiating.

Burial was in the Buffalo Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Hazel Ruth Allen

March 7, 1897 to July 14, 1988
Hazel Ruth Allen, 91, formerly of Beech Grove, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at Home Hospital. Lafayette. She was a patient there since March 27. She had been ill for the last year.

She was born March 7, 1897 in Letts Corner and was married to Paul 0. Allen, Aug. 1917, in Indianapolis. He died in August of 1973.

She lived in Beech Grove until 21 months ago when she moved in with her daughter, Ms Maurine (Ruth) Davis, of Rt.5, Monticello, who survives.

She was a member of South eastern United Church of Christ, Indianapolis.

A sister and a daughter are deceased.

Also surviving are two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday at 10 a.m. in Dorsey-Doty Mortuary, Indianapolis with the Rev. Don Arterburn officiating. Burial was in Milford Cemetery, Milford.

James Clifford Allen

Aug. 18, 1914 to March 14,1999
James Clifford Allen, 84, formerly of Wolcott, died Sunday, March 14, at Monticello Healthcare Center. He had been ill for seven years and had resided at the care center for two years.

He was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Wolcott, to Walter and Effie Wolfe Allen. He was married Nov. 25, 1959. to Barbara Hitchcock, and she died in 1992.

He graduated from the Wolcott High School in 1933. He worked as a salesman.

He is survived by three sisters, Edna Young of Loves Park, Ill., Mary Fish of Hayward, Calif., and Pauline Wynkoop of Brookston.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

There was no funeral service or visitation. Burial was in Roseland Memorial Park, in Terre Haute. Foster Funeral Home, Wolcott was in charge of arrangements.
