Matilda Bruss Allen

February 27, 1902 - April 2, 1994
Matilda Bruss Allen, 92, formerly of Brookston, died Saturday evening, April 2, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient for two weeks.

She was born in Brookston to Edward Clay and Matilda Caroline Wolf Bruss on February 27, 1902. She married Cleo R. Allen on June 30, 1925 in Brookston. He died in 1961.

She graduated from Brookston High School and Madam Blaker's Teachers College, Indianapolis.

She was the first married teacher at the Brookston school where she taught the first grade for five years. She also was permitted to wear lipstick. Her husband owned Allen Motor Sales (a Chevrolet dealership) for 36 years.

She lived in the house where she was born for 91 years.

She was a charter member of the Brookston Federated Church, member and first pledge of the Chi Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Brookston Mothers Club and Brookston American Legion Auxiliary No. 251.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. John (Norma) Ward, Rt. 2, Brookston, and one son, Carter Allen of Tucson, AZ; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were today at 10 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Stuart Robertson officiated.

Burial was in lOOF Brookston Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Brookston Federated Church.

Robert W. Allen

May 20, 1928 to March 26, 1998
Robert Wayne Allen, 69, Chalmers, died Thursday, March 26, in Marco Island, Florida. He died on vacation in Marco Island, Florida. He had been ill since 1989.

He was born May 20, 1928, to Benjamin H. and Minnie Austin Allen, in Chalmers. He was married May 18, 1982, to Patricia Bell Stockment, in Chalmers, and she survives. He was a 1947 Chalmers High School graduate and graduated in 1954 from Valparaiso Technical School. He also attended Monmouth Junior College in New Jersey. He was the former owner of Economy TV in Monticello for 10 years. He also worked with repair and maintenance of electronics. He retired in 1989 from Lafayette School Corp. as its electronics maintenance man. He served during the Korean Conflict in the US Navy from Sept. 1949-March 1953, where he was assigned to the USS Mount Katmai, based in Sasebo, Japan.

He was a member of the Monticello Christian Church and attended the Chalmers Community Church. He was also a member of the American Legion in Monticello, the American Lung Association and the Lafayette Better Breathers.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Vicki) Nethercutt, Logansport; two sons, Larry of Wolcott and Rick of Monticello; two stepdaughters, Mrs John (Deborah) Stockment Maxwell, Brookston and Mrs. Doyle (Dianna) Stockment Maxwell, Francesville; two stepsons, Gregory Stockment, Brookston and Bradley Stockment, Chalmers, a brother, Leon, Reynolds; 22 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral services were Tuesday, March 31, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery with military rites at the cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or the Chalmers Community Church.

Beulah Evelyn Altman

July 10, 1913 to May 25, 1997
Beulah Evelyn Wann Altman, 83, 3777W-7005, Chalmers, died Sunday morning, May 25, at her home.

She was born July 10, 1913 in Cissna Park, Ill, to Daniel Baxter and Marie Gruessing Wann. She was married May 28, 1935, to Francis J. Altman and he survives.

She was a 1931 graduate of Chalmers High School and 1933 graduate of Indian State University.

She retired after teaching for 26 years. Her first teaching assignments were in one-room school houses in White County. She later taught at Chalmers Elementary School, retiring in 1975.

She was a life member of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, Chalmers. She was an honorary member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds and the St. Joseph Altar and Rosary Sodality.

Surviving with her husband are six sons, Francis Danton and Jerry Dean, both of Monticello; Kenneth Eugene, Charles Raymond and Phillip Jack, all of Chalmers and William Joseph of Muncie; a daughter, Virginia Altman Erickson, West Lafayette; four brothers, Earl Wann, Golf Shores, Alabama, Ivan Wann, Melott, Dean Wann, Tecumseh, Mich. and Robert Wann, Indianapolis; a sister, Lucille Lehmann, Belville, Ill.; and 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Five sisters and a brother are deceased.

A funeral mass was conducted at 19 a.m., Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds, with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating. A rosary was conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Beulah Altman Scholarship Memorial Fund for able Frontier students pursuing a teaching vocation.

Luis Astudillo

3/15/75-2/9/01
Luis Astudillo, 25, of Monticello, died Friday, February 9 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born March 15, 1975 in Tehuewecia Gverrero, Mexico, to Francisco and Silvia Flores Astudillo. He married Erica Martinez on March 22, 1997, in Monticello. She survives.

He lived in Monticello for six years, coming from Mexico. He was employed at A.O. Smith for six years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Katrina Astudillo, Monticello; his father and mother, of Tehuewecia Gverrero, Mexico; five brothers, Mario F. Astudillo, Espiridion Astudillo, Aretmio Astudillo, all of Monticello, Francisco Astudillo, of Mexico, Jose Astudillo of Monon; three sisters, Carmela Astudillo, Mariana Astudillo and Vencanis Astudillo all of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Deacon Domingo Castillo officiating. Voorhis — Draper Funeral Home was in charge of the services. Burial was at Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Monticello.

Memorials may be made to the Astudillo family.

Betty B. Baker

April 15, 1916 to Aug. 2, 1998
Betty B. Baker, 82, 3401 Soldiers home Road, West Lafayette, a resident of heritage Healhcare Center, died Sunday, Aug. 2, at 9:28 a.m. at the healthcare center.

She was born April 15, 1916, to Ralph M. and Gladys Aldridge Beauchamp, in Indianapolis. She was married Owen C. Jones who is deceased. She then married Jacob A. Baker, March 1990, and he is deceased. She was a graduate of Hyde Park High School, Chicago, Ill. She had lived in West Lafayette for 1 1/2 years, coming from Monticello and Monon. She was employed as a waitress and caterer and worked at the Monticello Tippecanoe Country Club for 25 years. She was a member of the Yeoman Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Lynn Bentlage, West Lafayette; two sons, Dick W. Jones, Custer, S.D. and Donald E. Thompson, Monticello; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Memorials may be given to Yeoman Methodist Church or the Monon Public Library. Soller Baker Funeral Home, Lafayette, was in charge of arrangements.

Essie M. Miller Baker

August 11, 1907 to July 4, 1996
Essie M. Miller Baker, 88, 403 Oakview Dr., Monticello, died Thursday, July 4, at 5 p.m. in the Monticello Healthcare Center, where she was admitted April 16th.

She was born Aug. 11, 1907, to Cyrus Franklin and Lesta Criswell Barrett, in Brookston. Her first marriage was to Alfred Miller, Dec. 24, 1925 and he died March 25, 1956. Her second marriage was to Rev. Everett Baker, Nov. 17, 1962, in Lafayette and he died Sept. 10, 1974. She worked at Indiana Veterans Home, West Lafayette for several years. She moved from Brookston in 1986, to Monticello. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Monticello.

Surviving are two brothers, Wilbur Barrett, Monticello and Mason Barrett, Brookston; two sisters, Grace Nelson and Mrs Stanley (Lillian) Newhard, both of Lafayette; a daughter-in-law, Alberta Miller, Monticello; two grandchildren, Mrs. William (Connie) Maffett, Monticello and Greg Miller, Delphi; six great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Two sons, a sister and two brothers are deceased.

Services were held Sunday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston with Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to charities.

William Barnett

Dec. 22, 1956 to Oct. 7, 1998
William "Bill" Bamett, 41, Idaville, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.

He was born Dec. 22, 1956, to William and ImaJean Ousley Barnett in Prestonsburg Ky. He was married Feb. 8, 1986, to Sharry Coleman in Plant City, Florida, and she survives.

He attended Logansport school and had lived in Idaville for 10 years.

He was a heavy equipment operator with IUOE Local 103 of Kokomo. He was a member of Monticello AMVETS.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Shurine Barnett, Las Vegas and Monica Barfield, at home; a son, Trevor Barnett, at home; his mother, Imajean Dillon, Prestonsburg, Ky.; and a brother, Donald of Canton, Ohio.

Funeral services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Alvin Rockey officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas Paul Bauer

February 10,1970 to March 7, 1997
Thomas Paul Bauer, 27, Oxford, Indiana died March 7 in rural Benton County near Boswell.

He was born February 10,1970 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Brayton Lee and Marlene Austin Bauer. A 1987 graduate of Benton Central High School, he was a Freshman at Purdue University. He worked at Whiskey Barrel Planters in Boswell and had also worked Deep Sea Fishing in Alaska. He served in the US Army from 1987 to 1990.

He had a son, Thomas Bauer of Lafayette; 2 brothers, Mark Lee Bauer, Fowler and Charles James Bauer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and one sister, Mrs Alan (Hope) Deno, of Boswell. Other survivors include his parents Brayton and Marlene Bauer of Oxford; his grandmother, Florence Austin of Lafayette and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be a private family service on Thursday with burial in Chalmers Community Cemetery, at Chalmers. Arrangements were being made by Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston.

Lucille Baxter

November 30, 1920 to December 1, 2000
Lucille Baxter, 80, of Reynolds died Friday. December 1, 2000 at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette.

She was born November 30, 1920 in Somerset, Kentucky, and had lived in Reynolds since 1967, coming from Remington. She was a homemaker and had been a baby sitter and custodian at Reynolds Elementary School. She married Keith A. Baxter February 8, 1941. He survives. She was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Remington and was a member of Carpenter Township Home Economics Club. She enjoyed square dancing, roller skating, crocheting and gardening.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Marvin Baxter (Betty) of West Lafayette and Carl (Jeanie) Baxter of Lafayette; two daughters, Betty Jean Danford (Randy) of Monticello and Linda (Dennis) Deno of Remington; two brothers, Clifford Lee of Indianapolis and Earl Lee of San Martin, California; and two sisters, Christine Gladson of Bloomington and Gladys Brooks of Martinsville. 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren also survive. A brother and great-grandchild are deceased.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Stitz Funeral Home in Remington with Rev. Barb Lloyd officiating Burial was in Remington Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
