Jackson Y. Crowder
December 19, 1933 - September 15, 2000
Jackson Y. Crowder, 66, of Buffalo, died Friday, September 15, at Heritage Healthcare Center, West Lafayette.
He was born Dec. 19, 1933, to Byno and Eleanora Vanscoy Crowder, in Buffalo.
He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1951 and lived in Buffalo all his life.
He was a carpenter and a stone mason and a member of the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by daughters, Renee (Kevin) Kilbane, Fort Wayne and Jaci (Randy) Lane, West Lafayette; sons, Jason (Beth) Crowder and Brad Crowder, both of Monticello; sister, Dorothy Remley of Lucerne; and nine grandchildren.
A sister, Pauline Shields, a brother, Robert Crowder and a daughter, Lisa Ann Crowder are deceased.
A graveside service was Monday at Indian Creek Cemetery
near Headlee, with Frank Hicks, officiating. Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge.
Memorials may be given to the Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Doris H. Culver
December 9, 1922 - April 1, 1998
Doris H. (Roark) Culver, 75, Brookston, died Wednesday, April 1, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.
She was born Dec. 9, 1922, to Arthur Austin and Inez M. Henegar Roark, in White County. She was married Sept. 4, 1941, to Glenn Culver at the Badger Grove Baptist Church. He survives.
She graduated from Chalmers high School in 1940.
She was a homemaker. and a member of the Chalmers Com munity Church.
She was a member of the WCF of the church and also a member of the Chalmers Book Club and Kappa Kappa Sigma.
Her husband survives along with five sons; Bryan of Clay City, Eric and John, both of Chalmers, Mark of New Castle and Philip of Washington, two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Irene) Buxton of Williamsburg, Va. and Georgia Ruemler of Muncie; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Memorials may be given to Chalmers Community Church.
Hilda S. Curwick
August 27, 1903 - April 18, 1998
Hilda S. Curwick 95; formerly of Monon, died Sunday, April 18, at Twin Lakes Village in Monticello.
She was born Aug. 27, 1903, to Adolph and Anna Walters Onken, in Francesville.
She lived most of her life in Monon.
She was a waitress at Southside Cafe in Monon and then worked at White's Five and Dime Store for several years
Surviving are two sons, Glenn of Monon and Wally of Lafayette; two daughters, Marcelline Dismore of Reynolds and Linda Franklin of Monon; a sister, Edna Dobbins of Monon; 17 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; three stepgreat grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.
A son, two sisters and eight brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Wednesday (today) at 11 a.m. in Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. James Copeland officiating.
Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Francesville.
Memorials may be given to Monon First Response.
Vera T. Darnell
March 28, 1897 - March 21,1987
Vera T. Darnell, 89, 207 N. Spruce St., Monon, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Regency Place Nursing Home in Lafayette. She was born March 28, 1897, in Chicago to Fredrick and Mina (Ehrler) Taube. She was married Feb. 14, 1916, to Wilbur Darnell who is deceased. She was a member of Monon Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, John A Darnell, Shreveport, La., and Wilbur P. Darnell, Lafayette; one daughter, Beverly Heater, South Bend; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One son and one great-grandchild are deceased.
A service was conducted Monday at Stewart Funeral Home in Monon, the Revs. David Boehning and Mike Trueblood officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Cemetery.
Denzil 'Hugh' Daulton
September 18, 1932 - June 28, 1991
Denzil "Hugh" Daulton, 58, R.1, Delphi, died June 28, in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been ill for the last 18 months. He was born Sept. 18, 1932, to Willie and Oma Tarter Daulton, in Nancy, Ky. He was married March 17, 1957, to Leta L. Cade, in Reynolds. She survives. He was an Army veteran in the
Korean War and an avid fisherman and bowler. He moved to Delphi, from Kentucky, 18 years ago. He was a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church at Nancy, Ky., the Delphi American Legion Post, the Lafayette Moose Lodge, and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 103, Kokomo.
Surviving with his wife and father, who lives in Boswell, are two daughters, Rebecca L. Klooz, R.2, Brookston and Kimberly Stevens, Monticello; two sisters, Gladys Sharp and Roberta Leinberger, both of Boswell; and six grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased.
The funeral was Friday in Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home, Monticello, the Rev. Donald Osten officiating. Graveside military rites were Saturday at Whitis Cemetery, Nancy, Ky., Dr. James Floyd and the Rev. Walt Jones officiating.
Cora Whisler Davis
Feb. 7, 1894 - July 9,1987
Cora Whisler Davis, 93, Reynolds, died Thursday, July 9, in Fairview Village Nursing Center, Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. She was born Feb. 7, 1894, in White County, to George and Lidia Powell Whisler. She was married to Lee Davis, who died Jan. 23, 1969. She graduated from Cook Co. School of Nursing in 1914. She was a member of Reynolds Christian Church. She and her husband also lived in. the Brookston and Chalmers areas.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ellen Petroskie of New Cumberland, Penn. with whom she had lived the past 13 years; one son, Marion Davis of Black Canyon City, Arizona; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. One son is deceased.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Todd List officiating. Burial was in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Brookston.
Terrell Wright Dawkins
[1920] - July 17, 2000
Terrell Wright Dawkins, 80, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, retired co-owner of Dawkins Electric Co., died of respiratory failure, July 17, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East. He was the husband of Geneva Long Dawkins and the widower of Evelyn Wynkoop Dawkins. He was a member of Southwest Baptist Church in Fort Myers, a former deacon and Sunday school director of Bellevue Baptist Church. He was a 33rd degree Mason. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in electrical engineering.
Survivors are three sons, Robert Terrell and Charles Tate, both of Memphis, James Lee of Dallas, a step-daughter, Dixie Brown of Monon, a brother, B. Tate Dawkins Jr. of Memphis, and seven grandchildren.
Services and burial were held July 21st in Memphis.
Stanley Dennison
April 21, 1916 - 1987
Stanley Dennison, 70, Wolcott, died Monday in Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis, shortly after being admitted. Mr. Dennison was a farmer and an Army veteran of WW II. He was born April 21, 1916 in Lewis County West Va. and had lived in Wolcott since Dec. 1973. He was married to Emma Snider, who survives. Mr. Dennison was a member of Wolcott Baptist Church.
Surviving with the widow are three sons, Charles, Jane Lew, W.Va., Rollin, Lafayette and Marvin of Chalmers; a sister, Mrs. Nina Cox of Clarksburg, W.Va.; and one brother, Homer of Ellenboro, W.Va. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Services and burial will be at Jane Lew, W.Va. The Foster Funeral Home in Wolcott was in charge of arrangements.
Lester K. Denton
July 31, 1912 - August 2, 1998
Lester K. Denton, 86, Monon, died Sunday, August 2, at 1:27 p.m. in Rosewood Terrace Nursing Home, Elichart, where he had resided since Dec. 1997. He had been ill for three years. He was born July 31, 1912, to Benjamin and Mae Peregrine Denton, in Lee. He was married June 29, 1933, to Dorothy Cochran in Monon. She died Sept. 10, 1950. He then married Vivian M. Eldridge, Nov. 10, 1951, and she died Feb. 7, 1998. He was employed at RCA, Monticello, in maintenance for 26 years before retiring. He was also a farmer for 36 years and was also a truck driver during the years he farmed. After retiring, he ran a lawnmower repair service. He was a member of the Lee United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Monticello Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge of Monon.
He is survived by three daughters, Helen Vandervort, Lafayette; Mary Sue Williams, Brandenton, Florida and Joyce Callier, Vale, Oregon; two sons, Robert, Elkhart and Harry, Mission, Texas; four sisters, Dorothy Parker, Rensselaer; Dora Elston, Lafayette; Imogene Waymouth, Remington and Patricia Tiede, Monon; 24 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. A daughter, four brothers, three sisters, a grandchild and two great grandchildren are deceased.
Funeral services were today, Aug. 5, in Kellogg Funeral Home with the Rev. James Copeland officiating. Burial will be in the Osborne Cemetery, Rensselaer. Memorials may be made to Mooseheart Children's home.
Dr. G.L. Derhammer
August 27,1903 - December 4, 1987
Dr. G.L. Derhammer, 84, R.5, Monticello, died Friday, Dec. 4, at his home, apparently of a heart attack. He was born Aug. 27, 1903, at Monongahela, Penn., to George and Minnie Hamrick Derhammer. He was married June 25, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, to Gladys Welty, who survives. They moved to Brookston in 1931 where he practiced medicine until 1972. He was graduated from Indiana University Medical School in 1930. He was a major in the Army medical corps. He was the battalion surgeon for the 383 Engineer Battalion, and he was the depot surgeon for Ammunition Depot 0875 in England for 34 months. He formerly was director of Farmer's State Bank and team doctor for Brookston and Frontier High Schools. He was a charter member of the Brookston Optimist Club and belonged to the Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello. He received a 50-year pin for service in the Indiana Medical Society. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lafayette.
Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Nan Louise Brooks, Fort Smith, Ark.; one son, Ned Eugene, West Lafayette; two sisters, Marie Williams, Indianapolis and Bessie Jox, Valparaiso; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One sister is deceased.
The funeral was Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Jacob H. Hoffman officiating. Burial was in Pond Grove Cemetery, Auburn.
Robert Keith 'Bob' DeVault
February 23, 1928 - March 23, 1992
Robert Keith "Bob" DeVault, 64, R.1, Reynolds, died Monday, March 23, in White Co. Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1928, to Frank Leslie and Esther Edna Honegger, in Monon. She survives and resides in Monon. He was married Feb. 26,1947, to Marjorie May Burks, in Franklin. She survives. He was a 1948 graduate of Monon High School and an Army veteran. He lived all of his life in White Co., where he was a self-employed drainage contractor. He was a member of the former Pious Chapel Church at Idaville, and a member of the Chalmers American Legion Post.
Surviving with his wife and mother are four sons: Robert J. and Richard L., both of Lafayette; and Roger K. and Randall R., both of Reynolds; three daughters, Diana Foust, Lake Zurich, Ill.; Karen Yoder and Bette Lou Bilyeu, both of Brookston; and 18 grandchildren.
The funeral was today in Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. Mark Newbold officiating. Burial was in Monon Cemetery.
Avis L Deweese
September 10, 1912 - July 11, 1997
Avis L. Deweese, 84, former Brookston resident, died Friday, July 11, at 8:05 p.m. at Milner Community Healthcare Center in Rossville. She was admitted to Milner Community Healthcare Center, July 21, 1992. She was born Sept. 10, 1912, to Arch M. and Blanche Baylor Shine, in New Albany. She was married Aug. 15, 1934, to Russell Deweese, in Brookston, and he died Sept 8, 1976. She graduated in 1931, from Brookston High School. She had lived in Brookston, since 1917, coming to White County from Floyd County. She retired in 1977, from Purdue, where she worked as an account clerk for 15 years. She was a member of the Brookston . Federated Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two sons, Ray L. of St. Charles, Mo. and Rex A. of Rossville; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Carol) A. Rowe, Brookston; three brothers, Ralph L. Shine, Lakeland, Fla., Guy W. Shine, West Lafayette and Howard D. Shine, Monticello; and six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A sister is deceased.
The funeral was conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Memorials may be given to Brookston Federated Church Furnace Fund.
