Edward 'Dyke' Dykhuizen
October 29, 1907 - January 11, 1992
Edward C. "Dyke" Dykhuizen, 84, Brookston, died Saturday, Jan. 11, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient for one week. He was born Oct. 29, 1907, to George and Gertrude Goris Dykhuizen, in Lafayette. He was married March 14, 1932, to Mary McDowell, in Cincinnati, and she survives. He graduated in 1926, from Lafayette Jefferson High School and in 1931 from Purdue, with a degree in agriculture education. He had taught agriculture in Wolcott and Wheatfield. In 1970 he retired from Frontier High School where he had taught agriculture at Brookston and Chalmers for 33 years. He received a distinguished service award from Indiana State Teachers Association and meritorious service award from Indiana Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. He had formerly been a member of Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library Board and had formerly served on the board of directors of Prairieland Housing in Brookston. He was a life member of Purdue Alumni Association and was a member of Brookston Federated Church and a former elder and trustee of that church. He was a charter member and past president of Brookston Optimist Club.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Schelling, Frankfort and Mrs. Rex (Margene) Lewis, Lafayette; a brother, Kenneth, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Bylsma, Ft. Wayne and Mrs. Dorothy Vellinga, Phoenix, Arizona; six grand children and three great grandchildren. Five brothers and a sister preceded in death.
The funeral was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Ralph G. Smith officiating. Entombment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum, West Lafayette. Memorials may be made to the Brookston Federated Church and to the Cerebral Palsy Association at 650 N. 36th St. Suite D, Lafayette, Ind. 47905.
Orbie J. Edwards
July 4, 1935 - October 13, 2000
Orbie J. Edwards, 65, Russellville, Alabama, died Friday, October 13, 2000 at a hospital in Alabama. He was born in Alabama on July 4, 1935. He married Mary Alice Miller in Crown Point, IN on October 14, 1961.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Thomas Burton (Vickee) Edwards and Jerry J. (Marla) Edwards, all of Hobart, IN; two daughters, Rosemary Doom of Alabama, and Cathy Jo (Mike) Fuller of Texas; four grandchildren, his mother , 3 sisters and two brothers in Alabama. His father, 1 sister, his mother-in-law Alice (Clark) Miller and father-in-law Paul R. Miller are deceased.
Services were held October 15, 2000 at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel, Tuscumbia, Alabama with Gregory Reynolds and Larry Broadhead officiating. Burial was in Tharptown Cemetery.
Alfred 'Bud' Eisert
February 28, 1916 - December 22, 1999
Alfred "Bud" Eisert, 83, of Lafayette, died Dec.22, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had a heart attack while bowling at Star Lanes. He was born Feb. 28, 1916, to Arthur Henry and Louise R. Anker Eisert, in Wolcott. He was married Aug 30, 1941, to Gracie King, in Brookston, and she survives. He graduated in 1934 from Brookston High School and was also a graduate of Lafayette Business College. He was in the U .S. Army during World War II and served as a Staff/Sgt.During the Burma Campaign. He owned and operated Eisert Mobile Station in Brookston from 1940-1983. He also drove a school bus for Brookston School for 30 years. He was a member of the Brookston Federated Church. He was a member of the Jenks Euchre Club, Brookston American Legion Post 251 and a former member of the Brookston Optimist Club. He was an avid bowler in the Oldies But Goodies and Young at Heart Leagues.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Victor (Patricia "Ruthie") Bianchi of Winfield, Ill.; sisters, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Kelly and Carol Flynn, both of Chalmers: and two grandchildren; Mrs. Troy (Daniella) Laubsch and Henry Eisert Bianchi. A sister, Mabel Hiner is deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday in the Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Burial with Brookston American Legion Post 251 military rites was in the IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Memorials may be given to the Brookston Federated Church.
Minnie Baer Eller
January 11, 1900 - December 10, 1999
Minnie Baer Eller, 99, Brookston, died Friday, Dec. 10th at Heritage Healthcare Center in West Lafayette. She was born Jan. 11, 1900 in White County to Alva and Josephine Maxwell Baer. She married Roy Eller on Feb. 7, 1918 in Monticello. He died Feb. 25, 1970. She attended Round Grove School. She had lived in Brookston since 1961, moving from Round Grove Township. She was a homemaker. She attended Brookston United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George (Eva) Bain of Brookston; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased.
Funeral service was Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Pastor Jan Dimmick officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Memorials may be made to Brookston United Methodist Church.
Emil Lyle Ellis
December 11, 1927 - March 13, 1995
Emil Lyle Ellis, 67, LaPorte, died Monday, March 13, at his home in LaPorte, following an extended illness. He was born Dec. 11, 1927, to Wilbur and Esther Swygman Ellis, in Chalmers, Ind. He was married Sept. 22, 1951, to Florence Joseph, in Reynolds, and she survives. He had lived in LaPorte for the past 42 years, coming from Monticello.He had worked in construction at Woodruff & Sons for 30 years before retiring. He had served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a graduate of Reynolds High School and attended the United Methodist Church in LaPorte. He was a member of PRCU, Eagles, PNA and Amvets.
Surviving besides his wife, is a son Joseph S. Ellis, LaPorte; 2 grandchildren, and a sister, Alice Moncel, of Monon. He was preceded in death by a son and two brothers.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday at the Haverstock Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Houseman officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-9 tonight. Burial will be in the Pine Lake Cemetery
in La Porte.
Wilma R. Emerson
January 7, 1900 - June 22, 1987
Wilma Robinson Emerson, 87, Monticello, died Monday at 7:07 p.m. in White Co. Memorial Hospital. She had been hospitalized since June 12. She was born in Brookston, Jan. 7, 1900, and was married June 16, 1927 in Lafayette, to W. Johnson Emerson. He died May 5, 1983. She received her teaching certificate from Ball State University and taught for 33 years in the primary grades in Brookston, Monticello, Yeoman and Buffalo. Mrs. Emerson was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star. She was a charter member of Chi Chapter, Psi Iota Xi sorority in Brookston; and a member of Thalia Club and Brookston Mothers Club.
Surviving are two sons, George W. and Edwin G., both of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Wallace (Janet) Larson, Fair Oaks, Calif.; and a sister, Bernice Robinson McMullen, Santa Monica, Calif.
Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Monticello United Methodist Church. Interment in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home in Monticello was in charge.
John E. England
June 30, 1918 - November 23, 1991
John E. England, 73, Sorrento, Florida, a native of Brookston, died Sunday, Nov. 23, in his home. He was born June 30, 1918, in Brookston and had lived in Bloom field, Ind. before moving to Florida in 1966. Mr. England was a retired truck driver and had driven a truck for Floyd Cook at Otterbein, at one time. He also was a Golden Gloves boxer. He recently received an award for being the best school crossing guard in Sorrento.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Mathew, Fort Wayne and Martha East, Bloomington; three sons, Edward England, Gerry England and Terry England, all of Bloomfield; and a sister, Elizabeth Gardner, Lafayette.
There was a graveside service, Wednesday in Brookston.
David W. English
November 29, 1950 - November 13, 2000
David W. (Dave) English, 49, of Monon died Monday, November 13, 2000 at White County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Gary on November 29. 1950, to Wallace G. and Mary Trevorrow Wallace. He attended the Monticello United Methodist Church. He was an officer of Libanus Lodge 154, F&AM in Monticello, Order of Eastern Star (O.E.S.) Crystal Chapter 165, in Monticello, and Order of Amaranth of Lake County.
He is survived by his mother of Portage, formerly of Buffalo; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Michael Berdine of Merrillville; nieces Becky and Carly Berdine of Merrillville and nephew Jeff Berdine of Merrillville. His father is deceased.
Funeral Services were this morning at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, with the Rev. James R. Copeland officiating. Burial will be at Hughes Cemetery
south of Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Libanus Lodge 154 F&AM, Monticello.
Mary C. English
June 22, 1908 - November 28, 2000
Mary C. English, 92, of Portage and former Buffalo resident, died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at Portage Sterling House in Portage. She had been in failing health for the past couple of years. She was born in Holsopple, Pa., on June on June 22, 1908, to Charles and Elizabeth Edminston Trevorrow. She married Wallace G. "Wally" English in Gary on November 9, 1935. He died August 9, 1998. She lived in the Portage area for the last couple of years, moving from Buffalo. She was a retired elementary school teacher. She was a member of the Ross Reform Church in Gary. She attended the Monticello United Methodist Church while she lived in the area. She was a 50-year member of Olive-Chapter 396 O.E.S. in Portage.
She is survived by a daughter Jane (Michael) Bernadine of Merrillville; sisters Helen Kendig, Buffalo, Charlotte Wisor of Stoystown, PA., Nancy (Alfred "Pat") Small, Decatur, IL; brother Tom (Dorothy) Trevorrow of Ford City, PA and two grandchildren. A son David W. English is deceased.
Funeral service was Friday at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Rev. James R. Copeland officiating. Burial was in Hughes Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ross Reform Church in Gary or Monticello United Methodist Church.
Geneive Erickson
January 30, 1891 - February 5, 1989
Geneive Morehouse Erickson, 98, Brookston, died Sunday Sunday, Feb. 5 at noon in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She had been a patient there since July. She was born Jan. 30, 1891 in Lafayette, and graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1912. She lived on a farm from 1916 until moving to Brookston in 1927. Her marriage was to Morris H. Erickson Sr., March 31, 1916, in Tippecanoe County. He died in April, 1950. Mrs. Erickson was a member of Brookston Federated Church; Philathea Sunday School Class at the church; Art Club and Garden Club, both in Brookston, and a member of Crystal Chapter 165, Order of Eastern Star in Monticello, for more than 50 years.
Surviving are two sons, Morris H. Erickson Jr., West Lafayette and John Paul Erickson, R.2, Brookston; one daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Harmon, Brookston; and a sister, Mrs. Zelina "Sammy" Hess, a resident of Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren. Four brothers, 4 sisters, 2 great-great grandchildren preceded in death.
Service was Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Brookston Federated Church with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Smith officiating. Interment was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston was in charge.
Gloria Belle Erickson
September 16, 1925 - November 25, 2000
Gloria Belle (Thompson) Erickson, 75, of Brookston, died Saturday, November 25, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She had been ill since February and was admitted to the hospital Friday. She was born September 16, 1925, in South Bend to Paul and Bessie A. Keplar Thompson. She married John Paul Erickson on August 24, 1947, in Brookston. He survives. Her parents owned Thompson Funeral Home in Brookston from 1936-65. She was a 1943 graduate of Brookston High School and attended DePauw University for three years. She was a homemaker. She was a member and elder of Brookston Federated Church, Ruth Circle, FWCE, Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and served on numerous boards of the church. She was an honorary retired member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Chi Chapter and was a member of Crystal Chapter No. 165 OES, Monticello. She was also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at DePauw. She was a member of Lafayette Porcelain Artists. She was an instructor in china painting an artist and enjoyed antiques.
Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Lana (Robert) Little of Brookston; a son, John (Denise) Erickson of Brookston, a daughter-in-law, Ginger Erickson of West Lafayette; and seven grandchildren. A son Steven P. Erickson, died on April 10, 1997.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. today at Brookston Federated Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston was in charge. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston. Memorials may be made to Brookston Federated Church.
Steven Erickson
May 13, 1949 - April 10, 1997
Steven Erickson, 47, West Lafayette, died Thursday, April 10, at 6 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
He was born May 13, 1949 to John Paul and Gloria Thompson Erickson, in Lafayette. He was married Aug. 11, 1973, to Ginger Altman, in Monticello, and she survives.
He was a 1967 graduate of Frontier High School. He received his B.S. in 1971 and his M.S. in 1973 from Purdue. He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural marketing in 1976 from the University of Illinois.
He was a professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue and had served as Assistant Department Head since 1994.
He authored and co-authored several textbooks in agribusiness management as well as book chapters, workbooks and over 150 articles for other academic and professional publications.
He had received many awards and honors, including: the Outstanding Agriculturalist Award in 1976, from Illinois State University; Best Teacher, Purdue Department of Agricultural Economics in 1979; Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher in. 1983 from the Purdue School of Agriculture, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Outstanding Purdue School of Agriculture Teacher in 1979 and 1984; American Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 1992; Outstanding Counselor, Purdue School of Agriculture in 1993; and the Charles A. Murphy Award as Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher at Purdue in 1995.
Surviving are two daughters, Abbie and Cassie Erickson of West Lafayette; a sister, Lana Little, Brookston; a brother, John F. Erickson, Brookston; his parents and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m., Sunday at the West Lafayette Federated Church with the Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials may be given to the Steven P. Erickson Scholarship Fund for Frontier High School and West Lafayette High School and the Purdue Agricultural Economics Teaching Enhancement Fund.
Juanita E. Fesler
June 19, 1913 - February 18, 1989
Juanita E. Fesler, 75, Logansport, died Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8:35 an. in Tacoma, Washington. She is the mother of John Fesler of Brookston.
Mrs. Fesler was born June 19, 1913 in Clinton County. She was married April 7,1932 to John N. Fesler, in Logansport. He died Dec. 8, 1964.
She was a lifelong resident of Logansport and was a retired attendant at Logansport State Hospital.
Surviving are two sons, John Fesler, Brookston and Dana Beaver, Seattle, Wash.; five daughters. Shirley Foster, Seattle; Karen Fearnow, Roy, Wash.; Bonnie Parkin, Black Diamond, Wash.; Carol Davis, Indianapolis and Sheila West, Muncie; two brothers, Gerald Brown, Lafayette and Ray Brown, South Dakota; and a sister Charlotte Brubaker, Logansport.
Service was Wednesday in Logansport.
