Mary Ellen Johnson Shumard

April 28, 1923 - May 13, 2002
Mary Ellen Johnson Shumard, 79 of West Lafayette died Monday, May 13, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette where she had been a patient since March 2001.

She was born April 28, 1923 in Sullivan, Ill, the daughter of Otis and Emma Josephine Trueblood Johnson.

She married Arthur Shumard on January 25, 1940 in St. Charles, Mo. He survives. She was a homemaker.

Surviving besides her husband are four sons, Arthur E. (Diane) Shumard of Battle Ground, Russell (Patricia) Shumard of Lafayette, Robert Shumard of West Lafayette, Roger (Helen) Shumard of Brookston and four daughters, Carolyn Sue Shumard of West Lafayette. Jane (Jerry) Slipher of Battle Ground, Luann (William) Vaughn of Lafayette and Mary C. "Cathy" (William) Madary of Lafayette.

She had thirteen grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Six brothers and five sisters, daughter Joann, and two grandsons preceded her in death.

Friends may call at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Tammy Mills officiating.

Burial will be in Battle Ground Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Howard W. 'Red' Walker

August 13, 1912 to January 27, 1993
Howard W. "Red" Walker, 80, 206 High School Ave., Battle Ground, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 9:50 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. He had been a patient since Jan. 24th.

He was born Aug. 13, 1912, to Charles and Lizzie Hibbs Walker, in Gifford. He was married Sept. 7, 1940, to Laura Kathryn Hauptli in Rensselaer, and she survives.

He lived for the last 35 years in Battle Ground.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 733rd Railway Operating Engineering Batallion.

He retired in 1972, as a crane operator. He worked for 35 years with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 103.

Also surviving is a son, James, Lafayette; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Janet) Fields, Elkhart; a brother, Vincent, Hammond; a sister, Mrs. Marge Maxwell, Rockledge, FL.; and two grandchildren. One brother and sister are deceased.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, Jan. 30, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev Lewis Ruman officiating.

Burial was in the Battle Ground Cemetery.

Gerald (Jerry) Baker

May 28, 1943 - April 26, 2002
Gerald (Jerry) Baker, 58, of Oolitic, Indiana died Friday, April 26, 2002 in I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis.

He was born May 28, 1943 in Lafayette, Indiana, the son of Leslie and Irene Clerget Baker.

He married Karen Hubbard on August 23, 1969 and she survives.

He is survived by a daughter, Holly Baker Cunha and her husband Ralph of Greenwood, Ind.

A grandson, William Gerald Cunha of Greenwood.

Three brothers, William Baker of Monticello, Don Baker of Buffalo and John Joseph Baker of Fresno, Calif.; two sisters, Siirley Balcom of Lancaster, Penn., and Carole Stinson of Monon, Ind.

His parents and a brother Earl preceded him in death.

He was co-owner of Hubbard TV in Bedford, Ind.

He was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church; Bedford Lodge #14 F&AM; American Legion Gillen Post #33; Bedford Elks Lodge #826 and Fraternal Order of Police.

Funeral services were today at Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Gary Cornwell officiating.

Entombment was at Cresthaven Mausoleum.

Judy Kaye Banes

Aug. 28, 1958 to Aug. 29, 1991
Judy Kaye Banes, 33, died Friday, Aug. 29, at noon in St. Elizabeth Hospital, from injuries received in a traffic accident.

She was born Aug. 28, 1958, in Lafayette and was a 1976 graduate of Frontier High Shcool. She had taken classes at Purdue. She was a former emergency medical technician and Chalmers first-responder. For eight years she was precinct committeewoman for Big Creek Township. She worked at the Monticello License Branch for 10 years and worked the past two years at Purdue as a secretary in the school's Nuclear Energy Department.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, John Johnson and Leona Tully Johnson. Chalmers; her father Robert Lane, Mason City, Iowa; one son Nicholas (Nick) Banes at home; a grandmother, Mrs. Nora Spear, Brookston, a brother Paul Spear, R.1 Battle Ground; several aunts and uncles; me nephew and one niece.

Services were conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home with the Rev Charles Fluckey officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Comnunity Cemetery.

Ruby R. Atwood Wall

Ruby R. Atwood Wall, 85, a former Battle Ground resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Regency Place, Lafayette. She was born Feb. 10, 1914, to D.J. and L.E. Massie Atwood, in Casey County, Ky. She was married Sept. 14, 1938, to Eventus Wall, in Stanford, Ky. He died Jan. 14, 1981. She had lived in the Ash Grove coninumity from 1940 until entering Regency in 1997. She was a homemaker. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Donny Anita Kay Mathers of Crocker, Mo.; Mrs. Thomas Patricia McGinnis and Jennie Larsen, both of West Lafayette, Mrs. William Gay Sulfridge of Brookston, Beulah McClung of Jacksonville, Fla. and Donna Balser of Frankfort; sons, Anthony Wayne Wall and Walter Keith Wall, both of Battle Ground, Eventus Ray Wall, Monticello and James Dee Wall, Brookston; brother, Doyle Atwood of Liberty, Ky and sister Sally Cochran, Lebanon, Ky.; 49 grandchildren; 82 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Robert Eugene Wall and David Neal Wall; daughter, Susie Richardson; four brothers and six sisters. Funeral service was Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Jan Dimick officiating Burial will be at the Battle Ground Cemetery.

John E. 'Jack' Barrett

September 2, 1931 - July 2, 2001
John E. 'Jack' Barrett, 69, of Monon died Monday, July 2, 2001 in Monon.

He was born September 2, 1931 in Chicago to Michael and Hanora Flynn Barrett. He married Shirley Richardson on May 25, 1960 in Chicago. She survives.

He was the Past Grand Knight and fourth-degree member of Madonna Council 1135 Knights of Columbus, and a member of the AmVets; the Teamsters Union; and the International Brotherhood of Operating Engineers Local 143.

Surviving with his wife are daughters; Noreen (Gary) Knight of Florida, Debra Barrett of Midlothian, Ill, Linda Marquez of Buffalo, Karen (John) Dignin of Alsip, Ill, Diane (Brandon) Jurs of Monon, Sherri (Thomas) Johns of Monon, Kathleen (John) Lindsey of Buffalo; son, Joseph (Charisse) Barrett of Tinley Park, Ill; brothers, Michael, (Luella) Barrett of Chicago, William (Mary Kay) Piggott of Las Vegas, Edward (Eleanor) Barrett and Joseph (Karen) Hogan, both of Chicago; sisters, Mary Dowland of Grandview and Rose Ivers of Chicago, sister-in-law- Delores Barrett; 22 grandchildren, a great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, James Barrett; a sister, Lucille Dwyer, and brothers-in-law Horace Dowland, Thomas Ivers and Joseph Dwyer are deceased.

Funeral services were on Saturday at St. Gabriel Church, Chicago and burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Worth, Ill.

Thomas McInerney & Sons Funeral Home, of Chicago were in charge of the services.

Helen M. Barton

April 26, 1915 to April 25, 2000
Helen M. Barton, 84, Monticello, died Tuesday, April 25, at Twin Lakes Village.

She was born April 26, 1915, to Jesse and Grace White Hughes, in Monon. She was married Sept. 1934, to Charles R. Gross, and he expired in Feb. 1942. On June 13, 1959, she married Herman L. Barton, in Valparaiso, and he expired in July 1985.

She graduated in 1934, from Monon High School and had lived in White County all her life. She enjoyed fishing.

She is survived by daughters, Eleanor "Ellie" Lucy and Kay (Don) MacOwan, both of Monticello and Loretta (Daniel) Disinger, Francesville; stepson, Ronnie Barton, Monticello; brother, Ora Hughes. Monon; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. A daughter, Marlene Gross. a brother and great granddaughter are deceased.

Graveside was held Saturday at Bedford Cemetery, east of Monon, with Pastor Timothy McQuinn officiating. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge.

Memorials may be given to the Monticello Ambulance Service.

Betty Joe Yokum Becker

Dec. 20, 1923 to Jan. 23, 1995
Betty Joe Yokum Becker, 71, West Lafayette and formerly of Brookston, died Monday in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 20, 1923 in Elkins, West Virginia, to Otis B. and Ruby Ruth Currence Yokum. She married Donald E. Becker on July 1, 1978 in Lafayette and he survives. She moved to Brookston from Tippecanoe County in 1974 and to West Lafayette in 1984. She had been employed at Purdue University from 1974 to 1984 as a baker. She was a member of the Brookston Federated Church.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters, Pamela J. Bell of North Carolina, Rebecca Cherri Currence of Mill Creek, West Viriginia. and Dr. Robin B. Churchill of Jacksonville FL; two stepdaughters, Donna Rietschlin of London, Ontario, Canada, and Susan Becker of Cleveland, OH; two grandchildren and eight stepgrandchildren. Two brothers, Roger and Charles, are deceased.

A memorial service was held Wednesday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Brookston Federated Church.

Minnie L. Davenport Bell

April 15, 1908 to June 17, 1992
Minnie L. Davenport Bell, 84, R.1, Chalmers, died Wednesday, June 17, 10 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient since June 5.

She was born in Bell Farm, Ky., April 15, 1908, to Hiram Elmer and Esther Bell Davenport. She was married Sept. 9, 1929, to Oliver H. Bell, in Monticello, Ky., and he died June 15, 1987. She had lived in the Chalmers area since the 1930s and was a homemaker. She was a member of Chalmers Community Church and West Point Home Extension Club since 1947.

Survivors include a son, Gary W. Bell, R.l, Chalmers; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Allen, Chalmers and Mrs. Richard (Beverly) Overmyer, R.2, Francesville, two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Linderer, Chalmers and Mrs. Shellie Hazel Dagley, West Lafayette, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two sisters and three brothers are deceased.

The funeral was Saturday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Loren Shuman officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Chalmers Community Church.
