Mary Jo Bell

Sept. 7, 1929 to May 22, 2000
Mary Jo Smith Bell, 70, of Snellville, Georgia, died Monday, May 22, at her home. She had been ill four months.

She was born Sept. 7, 1929, to Glenn R. Smith and Bertie Marshall Smith Redding, in Clinton County. She was married in Dec. 1952, to Joseph E. "Joe" Bell, in Monticello, and he survives. She was a 1947 graduate of Frankfort High School and was a retired registered nurse.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Deborah Ann Stemen of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two sons, Brian F. Bell, Snellville, Ga. And Bruce A. Bell, Waukesha, Wis.; a brother, W. Robert Smith, Roswell, Ga.; a sister Ann (Jack) Kiger, Brookston; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in Snellville, Georgia.

Jason E. Berry

Sept. 7, 1907 - Oct. 29, 1987
Jason E. Berry, 80, Chalmers, died at 7:45 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, at Heritage Healthcare Center, West Lafayette. He had been a patient there for the past year and one half.

He was born Sept. 7, 1907, in Jackson County, Ind., to Luther and Maggie (Hands) Berry. He farmed in Round Grove Township, retiring in 1968 and moved to Chalmers. He was a member of the Chalmers Bible Center. His marriage on March 4, 1938, in Fowler was to Stella Jane Abney, who survives.

Also, surviving are two daughters: Mrs. George (Louise) Lawless, Lafayette and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Knowles, Lafayette; along with a stepdaughter, Mrs. Arnold (Dean Mead) Bolan, of Hartselle, Ala. A grandson, Michael Allen Berry, who was raised in their home, also survives. Other survivors are a brother, Kenneth Berry, Arcadia, FL., 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. One brother and one sister are deceased.

The funeral was at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, last Sunday at 3 p.m. with the Rev Charles Fluckey officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Stella Jane Abney Berry

August 21, 1911 to Jan. 5, 1994
Stella Jane Abney Berry, 82, formerly of Chalmers, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Hartselle Hospital in Hartselle, Alabama.

She was born August 21, 1911 in Thorntown to Warren and Catherine Izora Arnold Abney. She married Jason E. Berry in Fowler on March 4, 1938. He died Oct. 29, 1987. She had lived with her daughter in Hartselle, AL the past six years. She and her husband farmed in Round Grove Township in White County before moving to Chalmers in 1968. She was a member of the Baptist Bible Church in Chalmers.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Dean Mead) Bolan of Hartselle, AL; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Louise Lawless and Mrs. Betty Knowles, both of Lafayette; a brother, Richard Cross of Lafayette; and four grandchildren she raised. Two sisters and a brother are deceased.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Charles Fluckey officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Warren E. 'Ed' Bishop

Aug. 20, 1941 to Aug. 27, 1995
Warren E. "Ed" Bishop, 54, Lafayette, formerly of Monticello, died Sunday, Aug. 27, at 11:50 p.m. in Home Hospital, Lafayette.

He was born Aug. 20, 1941, to Max and Frances Neva Wilson Bishop, in Toledo, Ohio. He married Laura M. Hrindak Bruner who survives. He had lived the last year in Lafayette, moving from Monticello, where he had lived for 22 years. He graduated from Celina High School in Celina, Ohio and from Fort Wayne International Business College in Fort Wayne. He worked the last 17 years for PFT, formerly CTS in Monon. He was a former member of Monticello Moose Lodge. He had been active with Monticello Little League for 10 years.

Surviving with his wife are four sons, Scott S., Keith A., Brian E. and Darin L., all of Monticello; three stepsons, Michael V. Bruner, serving in the Navy in Japan, John E. Bruner, Indianapolis and Bobby F. Bruner, Brookston; a sister, Phyllis Carroll, Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren and mother of the four sons. Dawnita, G. Bishop Brettman, Westville.

The funeral was Thursday, at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, with Rev. Donald Arterburn officiating. Burial was in IOOF Riverview Cemetery.

Marian S. Bohart

June 29, 1905 to March 2, 1993
Manan Smith Bohart, 87, 405 Wood St., Brookston, died March 2 in Home Hospital in Lafayette. She had been a patient there nine days.

Born June 29, 1905 in Charlestown, she moved from rural Lafayette to Brookston in 1974. She married Charles Bohart on June 7, 1924 in Jeffersonville. He died October 6, 1986. She was a member of the former Order of Eastern Star in Battle Ground.

Surviving are three sons, Bob and Chuck Bohart of Seminole, FL; and Les Bohart of Lafayette; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Dockstader of Oswego, IL, and Martha Kesler of Umatilla, FL; seven grand children and 13 great-grandchildren. An infant son and a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Green, preceded in death.

The funeral was Saturday, March 6 at Hartzler Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Ann Smith officiating. Interment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.

Mary Miller Bordner

Sept. 16, 1908 to Jan. 4, 1997
Mary Miller Bordner, 88, of Valparaiso, formerly of Brookston, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997, at the Life Care Center, Valparaiso, where she had been a resident since May 1996. She had been in failing health for several months.

She was born Sept. 16, 1908, to Walter and Etta Sasbe Miller in Greenfield. She was married April 4, 1931, to Karl A. Bordner in Greenfield, and he died Feb. 13, 1978. She was a high school graduate and a graduate of Indiana Normal College, with a music degree. In the 1930s she taught music in Brookston and a homemaker. She was a member and former choir director of the Brookston Federated Church and a former member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority and Girl Scout leader. Mr. Bordner was a third generation owner of the Bordner Lumber Yard in Brookston. They moved in 1969, from Brookston to California. She returned to Indiana in 1982 and lived at the Pines Village in Valparaiso, from 1983 to 1996, when she went to the Life Care Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Gustat of Munster, and Mrs. William (Betty) Webster, Kensington, Calif.; a brother, Dale Miller, Greenfield; a sister, Eileen Crane, Greenfield; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. A sister is deceased.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Burial was at the IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorial contributions may be given to the National Society to Prevent Blindness.

Darlene Bossung

April 17, 1943 to Aug. 2, 1998
Darlene "Rusty" Bossung, 55, Reynolds, died Sunday, Aug. 2, at Home Hospital, Lafayette, following a lengthy illness. S

he was born April 17, 1943, to Cecil and Thelma Maguire Rusk, in Lafayette. She was married Aug. 22, 1964, to Richard Bossung, in Reynolds, and he survives. She lived for 34 years in Reynolds and was employed at Monticello Hearing Aid Center and was secretary at Bosswig Oil Inc. in Reynolds. She worked with the White County Election Board at the Reynolds polls for several years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds, where she was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society.

Surviving with the mother, of Lafayette, and her husband are a son, Douglas R., Monon; a daughter. Mary L. Church, Tooele, Utah; a brother, Gerald Rusk, Pitman; N.J.; and three grandchildren. A grandson and a half-sister are deceased.

Funeral services were today, Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard E. Miller officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello was in charge.

Memorials may be given to Hook's Rehabilitation Center at Home Hospital, Lafayette or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

William H. Bossung

March 15, 1928 to March 25, 1999
William H. Bossung, 71, of LaPorte, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, GA.

He was born in Chalmers on March 15, 1928 to George and Esther Vogel Bossung. He married Agnes Krulik in Reynolds on March 19, 1988. She survives. He was a 1946 graduate of Reynolds High School. He moved from Reynolds to LaPorte in 1988. He was retired from Bortz Farm Store and had been employed for Moorman's Feed Company of Reynolds. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of LaPorte. He was a member of Sacred Heart Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus St. Michael Council 1542.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Denise Bossung of Indianapolis; two stepdaughters, Connie Brisbon and Bonnie Pherson, both of Monticello; four step-sons, Don Krulik and Ron Krulik, both of Monticello, Lou Krulik of Hartford, Wis.. and Tom Kruiik of Martinsville; three sisters, Betty Kramer and Teresa Minnicus, both of Delphi, and Marge Welsh of Lafayette; two brothers, Dick Bossung of Reynolds and Ed Bossung of Monticello; three grandsons; 15 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A sister and a brother are deceased.

A funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Gerald Sroka and the Rev. John J. Strebig officiating. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, was in charge of the service. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Reynolds.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Harvey R. Bowen

May 1, 1903 to May 13, 1992
Harvey R. Bowen, 89, formerly of Delphi, died Wednesday, May 13, in Indiana Veterans Home, West Lafayette, where he had been a patient for 18 months.

He was born May 1, 1903, to Harry and Ida Lynch Bowen, in Portland. He was married May 18, 1942, to Thelma Madson, in Muncie and she died in 1972. He graduated from the Muncie Barber's School and was an Army Air Corps veteran during World War II. He was a barber in the Delphi and Flora communities for more than 50 years, and he retired in the early 1980s. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 73, and was a former member of the Delphi First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are one son, Robert H., R.2, Brookston; one daughter, Sally Hogan, Monticello; and two granddaughters. One sister and two brothers are deceased.

The funeral was Saturday in Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, the Rev. James Rankin officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Delphi.

Milton B. "Bee" Brady

Jan. 1, 1922 to August 5, 1994
Milton B. "Bee" Brady, 72, Rt. 2, Brookston, died Friday, August 5 at his residence. He had been in failing health since January.

He was born in Cass County on Jan. 1, 1922 to James W. and Bertha Mae Nethercutt Brady. He married Geraldine Doris Breezee on Jan. 16, 1943. She died July 18, 1992. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9383, Delphi. He lived in the Monticello-Delphi area most of his life. He had been employed at the former Kerlin Feed Mill in Delphi for 25 years, and retired from Globe Valve in Delphi in 1984. He was a member of the Monticello Eagles Lodge No. 2570, and the Mt. Olive No.48 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Delphi.

Surviving are one son, Paul D. of Pittsburg; two brothers, Joe of Kewanna and Russell of Delphi; three sisters, Lucy V. Mull of Idaville and Winifred Marquess and Wanetta Kay Harrison, both of Monticello; a companion, Phyllis England of Brookston; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 8, at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, the Rev. Alvin Rockey officiated. Graveside military rites were conducted at Idaville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bernice K. Breckenridge

Aug. 15, 1890 to May 28, 1990
Bernice K. Breckenridge, 99, formerly of Brookston, died May 28 at 9:15 p.m. in Winter Park, Florida. She had been a resident at Manor Care Nursing Home since April 16, after suffering a faIl April 7th

Mrs. Breckenridge was born Aug. 15, 1890, in Sheldon, Illinois. She went to school in Monticello and after attending Depauw University, was an elementary school teacher in Brookston. She married W.B. (Broke) Breckenridge of A.L. Breckenridge & Son, Dec. 26, 1914. In 1968, they moved to Orlando, Florida. Mr. Breckenridge died in July 1969. Mrs. Breckenridge was a member of Reeves Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Ralph, Casselberry, Florida, 2 grandchildren and one great grandson.

John A. "Jack" Briney

March 3, 1920 - February 5, 2002
John A. "Jack" Briney, 81 of 607 Orchard Lane, Monticello, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at his residence.

He was born in Carroll County on March 3, 1920, to Alfred "Gus" and Isabell Roach Briney. He married Mary Jane Stults in Logansport on December 27, 1942. She survives.

He had lived in the Monticello community most of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of Monticello High School.

He owned and operated Briney's IGA Grocery Store in Monticello for more than 30 years.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club and Tippecanoe Country Club, all of Monticello and John Purdue Club. He also was a former member of the Twin Lakes School Board.

He was an avid sports fan and a strong supporter of Purdue University Sports.

He and his wife spent many winters in Fort Myers Beach, FL.

Other survivors include sons, John (Mary) Briney of Monon and Jerry (Candace) Briney of Peoria, Ariz. Also sisters, Kathryn Gates and Margaret Ellis, both of Frankfort, and Mary Jane Bergsma and Eileen Briney, both of Lafayette; a brother, Bob (Phyllis) Briney of Logansport; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Friday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Rev. James Goodrum officiating.

Burial was at Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
