Gerald E. Wood
May 24, 1921 to January 25, 1993
Gerald E. Wood, 71, of 408 N. Spruce St., Monon, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday in Jasper Co. Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past year.
He was born May 24, 1921, to Charles C. and Frieda M. Wineland Wood in Jasper County. He was married Sept. 17, 1947, to Dorothy M. McDonald in Monon, and she survives.
He was 1938 graduate of Monon High School and was a mechanic for Howard Implement Co. for 22 years. He worked at Alloy Rods in Monticello for 17 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.
He was a lifetime resident of Monon, and was a member of the Monon United Methodist Church, the Eugene Hughes Post 319 of the American Legion and of the Monon V.F.W.
An avid sports fan, he helped start the Monon Little League program in Monon, managed Legion Baseball for many years, was the winner of the first annual Archie Shelton Legion Baseball Award in 1947. He served as a baseball umpire for many years. He also served on the Monon Town Council for five years.
Surviving besides his wife are 3 sons, Gerald (Gerry) L. Wood, Monon; George B. Wood, Worthington; Gordon C. Wood, Lynnville, and two daughters; Gale L. of Mishawaka and Gina Becovitz, Indianapolis. He had 6 grandchildren.
Funeral services were at the Kellogg Funeral Home at 11 a.m. this morning with Rev. Roy Lee officiating. Cremation immediately followed the service.
Memorials may be given to the Monon United Methodist Church organ fund or Monon Park playground equipment fund.
John E. Brown, Sr.
November 26, 1916 - November 1, 2002
John E. Brown, Sr., 85, of Rensselaer, a former Monon resident died Friday, November 1, 2002 at Jasper County Hospital, in Rensselaer.
He was born at Monon on November 26, 1916, to Archie and Ruth (Ogburn) Brown. He married Ida Mae Widner. She died in 1990. He then married Betty Risner Hayes at Rensselaer on June 20, 1992. She survives.
He previously lived in the Monon area and had attended the Monon Schools. He had been a Rensselaer resident for 10 years.
He was a self-employed farmer for more than 40 years.
He was a member of the Faith Christian Tabernacle of Rensselaer.
He had been a White County councilman for 18 years and had served with the White County Sheriff's Department.
Other survivors include a daughter, Connie Dalka of Reynolds; a son, John (Nedra) Brown, Jr., of Olney, Ill; stepdaughter, Joan (Keith) Hamstra of DeMotte, sisters June Jones and Lorena Johnson, both of Monon; brothers, Keith (Betty) Brown of Burlingame, Calif., Richard (Betty) Brown of Cape Coral, Fla., Robert (Thelma) Brown of Waldron and Jack (Sally) Brown of Estero, Fla.; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A sister is deceased.
Visitation was Sunday at Jackson Funeral Chapel, Rensselaer where funeral services were held Monday with Dr. James Blanchard officiating.
Burial was in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.
Memorials may be made to the Faith Christian Tabernacle.
Willis B. Cade
April 11, 1917 - Nov. 2, 1998
Willis B. Cade, 81, Monon, died Monday, Nov. 2, at Monticello Healthcare Center. He had been ill for one month.
He was born April 11, 1917 to Edward Byron and Lena Elizabeth Krueger Cade, in Worthington. He was married Sept. 8, 1940, to Dixie Ann DeVault, in Monon, and she survives. He graduated from Wolcott High School in 1935. He lived most of his life in the Monon community. He was a farmer all of his life and worked for 25 years as a North White School Corp. bus driver. He was a 50-year member of the Guernsey Church of the Brethren. He was a 50-year member of former I.O.O.F. Lodge in Monon.
Surviving with the wife are three daughters, Willcina Tiede, Guynith Hornback and Millena Eckert, all of Monon; a brother, Merle E. Cade of Huntington, Calif.: a sister, Margaret Jarrett of Knox; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A sister and a great grandchild are deceased.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. Janet Hildreth officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Bedford Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Monon First Response.
Vernise Carlson
December 9, 1899 - November 12, 2001
Vernise Carlson, 101, formerly of Monon died Monday, November 12, 2001 at Monticello Healthcare Center. She had lived at the center for the past 2 1/2 years. She had been ill for about a month.
She was born December 9, 1899 in Wolcott, the daughter of James G. and Eva Williams Spencer. Her marriage was to Richard Carison in Monticello on September 1, l921. He died October 31, 1960.
She graduated from Monon High School in 1918.
A retired schoolteacher, she taught for 3 years in Monon Twp. and Jasper County Schools. She taught in 1-room schoolhouses. She was also a homemaker and had lived in White County all her life.
She was a member of the Monon First Baptist Church and Monon Modern Homemakers Club.
Surviving are three daughters; Rachel (Edmund) Carr and Imogene (Bob) McLean, both of Clearwater, FL and Lois Newman of Lafayette and one son; Duane (Artie) Carlson of Monon.
Two sisters, Opal Shull, Kewanna, IN and Vera Wilson, Monon also survive along with 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. One son, Dean Carison, four brothers and four sisters are deceased.
Friends may call at the Kellogg Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2001.
Funeral services will be at the Kellogg Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday with Rev. Steve Birch officiating.
Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Monon First Baptist Church or American Lung Association.
H. Howard Clemans
May 28, 1911 - September 24, 2000
H. Howard Clemans I, 89, of Buffalo died Sunday, September 24, 2000 at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare.
He was born May 28, 1911, in Protim, MO, to Samuel and Molley Raggsdale Clemans. He married Evelyn Hinshaw on September 24, 1963 in Fowler. She survives.
He had lived in the White County area since 1930. He owned and operated Clemans Garage in Buffalo from 1948 until his retirement in 1978.
He was a volunteer firemen in Buffalo and helped build the first Buffalo Fire truck. He also drove a school bus for North White School Corporation.
He is survived by his wife; sons Raymond Clemans of Lehigh Acres, FL, Wayne Clemans of Buffalo and Howard "Sonny" Clemans II of Kewanna; stepdaughters, Rita Adkins of Monon and Shirley Marquess of Buffalo; stepson Kenneth Hinshaw of Marion; brothers Russell Clemans of Florissant, MO and Leonard Clemans of Witchita, KS; sisters Ruth Buck and Esther Hall, both of Florissant. MO; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Three sisters and two brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Frank Hicks officiating.
Burial will be at Buffalo Cemetery.
Earl S. Clerget
Nov. 7, 1904 - June 14, 1987
Earl S. Clerget, 82, Monticello, died at 7:30 an. Sunday, June 14, in St. Anthony's Healthcare Center, Lafayette. He had been in failing health for six months and a resident of the Center since Tuesday.
Born Nov. 7, 1904, in White County, he lived in Monticello all of his life and farmed for 25 years before retiring in 1958. Also, he was a custodian for Twin Lakes School Corp. for several years and retired in 1973.
He married Elsie P. Dittman, June 11, 1933 in Fulton County. She died March 25, 1983.
Mr. Clerget was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Monticello.
Surviving a son, Charles L. Clerget, Memphis, Tenn.; three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Kretzmeier, Otterbein; Nancy L. Clerget, West Lafayette and Mrs. Ruth Ann Schwark, Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Stella Wilson Clerget, Monticello; a brother, Robert of Monticello; and three sisters, Irene Baker, Chalmers, Iva Dittman, Walton and Mrs. Roscoe (Esther) Elston, Monon.
Services were at Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home, Monticello, Thursday morning. Interment Bedford Cemetery
near Monon.
Scott M. Cooper
March 27, 1964 - August 25, 2002
Scott Michael Cooper, 38, of Chalmers died Sunday, August 25, 2002 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center Emergency Room, Lafayette.
He was born March 27, 1964, in Pawtucket, R.I., the son of Carol A. (Ronald) Smith of Lafayette and Thomas (Judy) Cooper of Battle Ground. He married Jana Kiser on November 2, 1984 in Chalmers. She survives.
He was a 1982 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lafayette.
He was a member of Local 115, United Steelworkers of America. He worked for 14 years at Rostone Corp. in Lafayette and was presently employed as a crane operator at ALCOA in Lafayette.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and being with family and friends.
Surviving with his wife and parents are daughters Brittany and Brianna Cooper, at home; son, Mitchell Cooper at home; grandmothers, Camilla (Gerald) Eberle of Lafayette, Dorothy Linderer of Chalmers and Daisy Kiser of Royal Center; brother, Kent (Kelly) Cooper of Lafayette; sisters, Angie (Nick) Fletcher and Amy Young of Brookston; stepsisters, Sue (Bill) Sulfridge of Battle Ground and Julie Kerby of Crawfordsville; five stepbrothers, Ron (Dana) Smith, Jr. of Brookston, Michael (Cori) Smith of Fishers, Kerry Yoder of Indianapolis, John May of Rensselaer and Scott Savage of Thorntown; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 5-9 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating.
Burial will be at Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Cooper Children Trust Fund.
