Esther Heims
September 5, 1914 - July 31, 1994
Esther Heims, 79, 613 W. Harrison, Monticello, died Sunday, July 31, in Tioga Pines Living Center. She had been in failing health for five months.
She was born September 5, 1914 in Chalmers to William E. and Lettie MaCurdy Heims.
She moved from Chalmers to Monticello in 1945.
She was school teacher for 40 years in Monticello and Union Township schools. She taught in the Twin Lakes School Corp. for 33 years before retiring in 1976.
Her extensive community volunteer work earned her the Herald Journal Volunteer of the Year award in 1990. She helped organize and served as the first president of the Monticello Classroom Teachers Association.
She was a member and elder of the Monticello Christian Church where she had been a member of the choir since 1946. She was also a member, group leader and past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship of the church and member of the XYZ Club. She served the church as primary department superintendent and as chairman of the worship and education committees. She also was the church's financial secretary for several years.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, White County Retired Teachers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association and the National Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Jolly Unison Extension Homemakers Club, and Pi Lambda Theta.
Surviving are one brother, William H. Heims of Monticello; one niece, Nancy Gunvalsen of Sun City, CA; three great-nieces and one great-nephew.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald Arterburn officiated.
Burial was in Chalmers Cemetery.
Eugene Heiny
November 22, 1920 - April 2, 2003
Eugene "Gene" Heiny, 82, of Monticello died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare.
He was born in Idaville on November 22, 1920, to Clayton O. and Hattie Tam Heiny. He married Esther Conwell in 1939. He then married Carolyn Carson in Monticello on April 2, 1948. She died on July 11, 1989.
He lived in White County all of his life, and was a 1936 graduate of Idaville High School. During high school years as a Green Streak, he was a standout on the basketball team.
He was also a graduate of Ft. Wayne Business College.
He was employed as an accountant at the Monticello RCA plant until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Pine View Golf Club, and Tri-Kappa Bridge-A-Rama, all of Monticello. He was a former member of Tippecanoe Country Club, where he loved to golf and play bridge and was a past president of the White County Saddle Club. He raised Appaloosa horses and participated in the 100-mile horse ride in Corydon.
He enjoyed playing euchre at the American Legion and Moose Lodge, both of Monticello. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and watching his granddaughter, Stacie play softball.
Survivors include daughters, Susan (Gale) Wright of Monticello, Saundra (Max) Green of Monon and Judy (Ron) Sheridan of Indianapolis; sons Robert (Lorie) Heiny of St. John and Ron (Chris) Heiny of Sullivan; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
His twin sister, Imogene Heiny Hutton; an infant daughter; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home in Monticello on Saturday with Rev. Keith Raderstorf officiating.
Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Monticello Softball Association at Voight Park.
Unabelle Heiny

Unabelle (Ballard) Heiny, of Sullivan, a former Medaryville resident, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes.
She was born to Oval F. and Mary E. Albright Ballard in Medaryville. She married Ronald 0. Heiny and he survives.
She was a 1956 graduate of Medaryville High School and had lived in Sullivan for 22 years.
She was a member of the Medaryville Christian Church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 139; the Sullivan Elks Club and the Indiana University Varsity Club.
She was employed as a manager at Indiana American Water Co. and was retired.
Surviving with her husband are two brothers, Jerry Ballard, Medaryville and Tom Ballard, Tucson, Arizona.
A sister, a half-sister and two infant brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday at Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home, Medaryville with the Rev. Elmer Conley officiating.
Burial was in Independence Cemetery, Medaryville.
Beverly J. Hendershot
November 13, 1926 - December 5, 2002
Beverly Jeanne Hendershot, 76, of Monon, died Thursday, December 5, 2002, at White County Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for 13 months.
She was born in Idaville on November 13, 1926, to Roy and Audra Elmore Secrest. She married Wayne Hendershot in Monticello on October 20, 1945. He survives.
She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Monticello.
She was a homemaker and had lived in the community for 42 years.
She was a member of Meadow Lake Church, Wolcott.
Other survivors include sons, Ronnie Hendershot of Manchester, Conn., and Jerry Hendershot of Crestview, Fla., daughters Connie Linback of Monon, Linda Taylor of Tucson, Ariz., Karen Eide of Francesville, and Carol McClendon of Cabot, Ark.; a brother Dick Secrest of Monticello; a sister, Barbara Ammermann of Sturgis, Mich.; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Robert Secrest, is deceased.
Funeral services were Sunday, December 8, 2002, at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon, with Pastor Brian Huber officiating.
Burial was in Bedford Cemetery.

Carl Edward Hendryx
June 23, 1938 - February 11, 1995
Carl Edward Hendryx, 56, of Port St. Lucie, FL, and formerly of Brookston, died Saturday, Feb. 11 at his home.
He was born June 23, 1938 in Brookston to Chester "Whitie" and Susie Damell Hendryx. He married Margaret Freeman, and she survives.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a mortgage company manager.
He graduated from Brookston High School in 1956 and attended Purdue University.
He was a member of the Sunrise Tabernacle Church, Ft. Pierce, FL.
Surviving with his wife and three sons, Troy L. and Stuart B., both of Conroe, TX, and Sean A. of Claremont, FL; two daughters, Beverly L. Hoover of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Cheri R. Fitzgerald of Port St. Lucie, FL; two brothers, J.D. and Rex, both of Brookston; three sisters, Edres "Eddie" Carter of Brookston, Sue Barrett of Fowler, and Dona Hansen of Jensen Beach, FL; and five grandchildren.
One brother, Gordon Hendryx, is deceased.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Sunrise Tabernacle Church, Ft. Pierce, FL. Burial will be in the White County Cemetery.

Jesse 'J.D.' Hendryx
July 24, 1927 - November 27, 2002
Jesse Darnell "J.D." Hendryx, 75, of Battle Ground died unexpectedly Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
He was born on July 24, 1927, in Brookston, to Chester Allen and Susie Darnell Hendryx. He married Mable Mathew on August 7, 1948, in Remington. She survives.
He died in the house where he was born.
He was a 1945 graduate of Brookston High School.
He was a farmer and retired in 1992. He was most recently employed at Top Notch in Brookston.
He was a member of Brookston Federated Church.
He was a charter member of the White County Merit Board and was a member of the Brookston Optimist Club.
Surviving with his wife are sons, Gary (Pam) Hendryx of Brookston, Jeff (Kelli) Hendryx of Morton, Ill., and Mark (friend Kathy South) Hendryx of Lafayette; daughters, Suzann (Hank) Brouwer of Buck Creek and Linda (Jerry) Hurst of Brookston; brother Rex (Georgia) Hendryx of Brookston; sisters, Dana (Ralph) Hansen of Lafayette, Edres (Will) Carter of Brookston, and Sue (Pat) Barrett of Boswell; and 12 grandchildren.
Two brothers, Gordon and Carl Hendryx are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.

Ralph D. Hensler
August 24, 1921 - February 7, 2000
Ralph D. Hensler, 78, of Remington, died Monday, Feb. 7, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.
He was born Aug. 24, 1921, to Christian A. and Ethel Hackley Hensler, in Remington. He was married Dec. 20, 1941, to Vera Hancock. She died Nov. 22, 1965. He then married Theresa Sansone Beuerman, July 29, 1967 and she survives.
He graduated from Remington High School in 1939 and was a lifelong resident of Remington.
He was a farmer and a member of the First Christian Church of Remington.
He enjoyed Belgian horses, which he would team for Plow Days with the Plow Gang in the Remington area, collecting and repairing furniture and playing euchre.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Don (Janet) Hensler and Ron (Lana) Hensler, both of Remington, Roy (Angie) Beuerman, Brookston and Brian (Kathy) Beuerman of North Fort Myers, Florida; four daughters, Patty (Ray) Smith, Remington; Connie (Larry) Pampel, Monticello; Barbara Voss, West Lafayette and Kathy (Kurt) Keller, Chalmers; a brother, Earl Hensler, Rensselaer; a sister, Lucille Schembs, Remington; 23 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A sister, Opal Stitz, a brother, Glen Hensler, and two grandchildren are deceased.
Funeral services were Thursday at Stitz Funeral Home, Remington, with Pastor Dean Cooper officiating.
Burial was in Remington Cemetery.
