Leota K. Thomas Matthews

May 24, 1921 - June 8, 1991
Leota K. Thomas Matthews, 70, 704 Wood St., Brookston, died Saturday, June 8, at Home Hospital, Lafayette. She had been in ill health for the last two years. She was admitted to Home Hospital, May 31.

She was born May 24, 1921, to Clarence and Katherine Fry Thomas, at Badger Grove. She was married Feb. 21, 1941, to Leonard I. Matthews, in Chalmers. He survives.

She graduated in 1940 from Brookston High School.

She and her husband had lived for 12 years, in Wolcott, in Battle Ground for 5 years and in 1963, moved to Brookston.

Survivors beside her husband are her father, West Lafayette; three daughters, Marcia Morgan, Mrs. Larry (Linda) Wood and Mrs. Louis (Janet) Capper, all of Brookston, two brothers, Marvin Thomas, Mississippi and Francis "Chub" Thomas, Brookston; a sister, Mrs. Carl (Elizabeth) Minniear, Reynolds; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A brother and two grandchildren are deceased.

The funeral was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Chester Ash officiating.

Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.

Leonard I. Matthews

January 14, 1914 - February 1, 1997
Leonard Ivan Matthews, 83, 704 S. Wood St., Brookston, died Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. in the Heritage Healthcare Center, West Lafayette. He had been in failing health, the past two years.

He had lived for one month at the Heritage Healthcare Center, prior to living at the Otterbein Healthcare Center.

He was born Jan. 14, 1914, to Frank and Myrtle L. Mason Matthew, in Clifton, Ill. He was married Feb. 21, 1941, to Leota K. Thomas, in Chalmers. She died June 8, 1991.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater as a cook with the 225th Field Artillery Battalion, during World War II.

He retired in Jan. 1976, from farming.

Survivors include three daughters: Mrs. Warren (Marcia) Bailey, Lafayette; Mrs. Larry (Linda) Wood and Mrs. Louis (Janet) Capper, both of Brookston; three brothers, Cecil, Burnettsville; Vaughn, Mission, Texas and Virgil, Monticello; a sister, Vaynetta Holeman, Monticello; and eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Burial will be at the Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

John J. "Johnny" Mattix

May 26, 1926 - January 14, 2001
John J. "Johnny" Mattix, 74, of rural Buffalo. died Saturday, January 14, 2001 in Monticello Healthcare Center. He was born May 26, 1926, in Chicago and had been a lifelong resident of his family farm near Buffalo.

For 29 years he worked for Super Test Service Stations as a station manager and truck drive.

He was an Air Force veteran, serving as an airplane technician from 1945 — 1948, and had reached the rank of sergeant. He also served two years in the Air Force Reserve.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and sports.

Surviving are a son Shannon (Stephanie) Mattix of Monticello; and a step-son, Kerry Hughes, of Monticello.

Funeral services were today at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Gregg Nydegger officiating.

Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.

Ben C. Maxwell

April 23, 1918 - February 11, 2001
We have received word of the death of Ben C. Maxwell, 82, of Valparaiso, IN. He died February 11, 2001 in Valparaiso.

He was born April 23, 1918 in Buffalo, IN and lived in Monon for several years. He attended Monon Schools

He had worked at Inland Steel in Gary, IN until his retirement.

He is survived by one brother, Forest R. Raines of Francesville.

Funeral services were February 14, 2001 in Graceland Cemetery with Rev. David R. Webb officiating. Funeral arrangements were by Geisen Funeral Home in Merrillville. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

Elmer G. Maxwell

unknown - February 15, 1989
Elmer G. Maxwell, 80, Chalmers, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison.

Mr. Maxwell was an electrician at Purdue for 30 years before his retirement. He was married to M. Irene Rotert, who survives.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. He also was associated with the Lutheran Church.

Surviving with his wife are a stepson, Steven Conarroe, Madison; and one brother, Charles Maxwell, Kokomo.

Service was Saturday in Madison.

Hugh Alan Maxwell

June 1, 1927 - January 13, 2002
Hugh Alan Maxwell, 74, a life resident of Brookston, died Sunday, Jan. 13, at Florida Hospital in Apopka, Florida.

He was born June 1, 1927, to Jesse D. and Freda Jenning Maxwell, in Lafayette. He was married Sept. 19, 1950, to Margie Ann Hallam and she survives.

He attended Brookston Elementary and High School and graduated in 1945.

He served in the Army Air Force from 1945-46. He was employed at Halstead Implement from 1947-63. He owned and operated the Frostop Restaurant from 1959-69. He worked with Purdue University Animal Damage Control from 1970-85 and retired from the Entomology Department in 1985.

Upon retirement he and his wife wintered in Tavares, Florida.

He was a member of the Brookston United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the church choir.

He was a member of American Legion Post 251 in Brookston for 56 years. He served as commander of the post for 20 years and retired in 1999. He was a member of 40&8 Chateau 211 of Monticello for 49 years and was a charter member of the Brookston Optimist Club. He served as Prairie Township Precinct Committee Chairman.

He bowled in several leagues in Lafayette and was also a member of the Lafayette Board of Directors of the ABC Bowling Association.

Survivors include sons Roger A. (Tina) Maxwell of Mead, Colo., John F. (Deborah) Maxwell of Brookston and Michael E. (Rhonda) Maxwell of Clinton, and five grandsons.

Services were Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston with the Rev. Jan Dimick and Pastor Bill Henderson officiating.

Burial, with military rites by Brookston American Legion Post 251, was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to the Brookston United Methodist Church.

Dr. Glen H. May

July 26, 1909 - January 2, 1999
Dr. Glen H. May DVM, 89, West Point, died Saturday morning, Jan. 2, at his residence.

He was born July 26, 1909, to Edward and Alice Park May, in White County. He was married March 17. 1934, to his first wife, Eileen Kenrich, and she died in 1986. He married Thelma Nugent, Aug. 24, 1987, and she survives,

He graduated in 1926, from Brookston High School and was a 1938 graduate of Ohio State University.

He operated a veterinary practice in West Point for 29 years and was a veterinary meat inspector supervisor for the USDA for 14 years.

He also farmed in White County for eight years. He was a member of Phi Zeta Society.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Marilyn A. Byers of West Point; a son, Daniel W. May of Canton Mich.; five stepchildren; four grandchildren; 12 grandchildren; a great grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.

His first wife preceded him in death, Eileen Kenrich May, a sister and five brothers.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. John Niblick officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in West Point Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to West Point United Methodist Church or West Point Volunteer Fire Department.

Glen Ivan May

April 9, 1914 - April 18, 2002
Glen Ivan May, 88, of Brookston, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Home Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

He was born on April 9, 1914, in Rensom County, N.D., to James and Ruth Miles May. He married Zonabelle Smith, his wife of 66 years, on March 26, 1936.

He was a 1931 graduate of Brookston High School. He attended a one-room school in North Dakota eight miles from home by either riding a horse or driving a spring wagon.

He retired from ALCOA accounting department in 1977 after 40 years with the company.

He was a member of the Brookston Federated Church.

He was a member of the Elks Club #143 of Lafayette, the ALCOA Retirees' Club and the Brookston Masonic Lodge #66.

He was president of the Brookston Town Board for 20 years.

Surviving with his wife are daughters, Sandra (Tom) Spear of West Lafayette and Bette Lou May of Tully, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A son, David, a daughter, Rebecca, and three brothers, Doyle, Dean and Argil, are deceased.

Funeral services were at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston on Monday.

Burial was at Meadow Lake Cemetery, south of Wolcott.

Memorials may be made to the Brookston Federated Church.
