Herbert E. May
October 24, 1920 - May 3, 2000
Herbert E. May. 79, Brookston, died Wednesday. May 3, 2000 at his residence. He had been in failing health for the past six months.
He was born on Oct. 24, 1920, in Lafayette to Elmer and Mamie Smith May. His first marriage was to Opal Ritenour on Dec. 25, 1940. She died in December 1989. He then married Lorraine Dorton Garrott on June 26, 1993 in Brookston. She survives.
He was a 1939 graduate of Brookston High School. He moved back to Brookston from Swayzee in 1993.
He served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 until November 1945. He was a Corporal in the 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in Normandy and Northern France. He was held as a prisoner of war for eight months.
He was a former member of the Monticello City Council and board of directors of the Salvation Army in Marion.
He had been in the banking business since 1945. He retired from Grant County State Bank in Swayzee in 1985, having worked there since 1967. He had been a bank director at Grant County State Bank since 1963.
He was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church.
He was a 50-year member of Libanus Masonic Lodge No. 154 of Monticello, a member of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, and a 50-year member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Bruce (Debby) May of Indianapolis and Ronald (Susie) May of Bloomington; a daughter, Judy (Lyle) Skaros of Zim, Minn., his stepmother, Katherine May of Brookston, a sister, Barbara (Donald) Purkhiser of Monticello; two stepdaughters, Chris (Leslie) Krok of Indianapolis and Janet (Michael) Grella of Seattle; a stepson, Doug (Barbara) Garrott of Troy, Idaho; six grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
Two brothers are deceased.
Funeral service was May 6, 2000 at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston; the Rev. Jan Dimick officiated.
Burial was in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Neva P. (Brugh) May
June 20, 1896 - December 7, 1998
Neva P. (Brugh) May, 102, formerly of Brookston died at the home of her son Clarence may in West Lafayette on Monday, December 7, 1998..
She was born June 20, 1896 in Brookston, the daughter of Charles and Daisy Jakes Brugh. A homemaker, she worked at ALCOA during World War II. She also worked at Brown Rubber Co. in Lafayette.
She married Robert F. (Bert) May on January 19, 1916 in Brookston and he died February 14, 1979.
One son, Clarence V. May of West Lafayette survives along with 3 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Three brothers and three sisters preceded he in death.
She was a former member of Pine Grove Methodist Church Ladies Aid and former member of Round Grove Home Demonstration Club.
Funeral services will be held in the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Friends may call at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston. Memorials may be made to Brookston Federation Church.
Darwin L. McBee
November 27, 1923 - December 13, 1998
Darwin L. McBee, 75, of Deadwood, South Dakota died at 11:00 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 1998 at the Rehab Nursing Home in Rapid City. He had been a patient there since early October.
He was born November 27, 11923 in Monon, the son of Allen D. and LaJune (Lowe) McBee.
An Army veteran serving in World War II, he was a graduate of Purdue University. He taught school at the Engineers School of Mines in Rapid City. He later became a self employed accountant.
His first marriage was to Dona Core of Rapid City. His second marriage was to Betty Simmons and she survives.
He and his wife had been wintering in St. George, Utah.
He is survived by four daughters and two sons, 13 grandchildren and two brothers, Robert of Rapid City and George of Monon.
One sister, Phyllis, preceded him in death..
Funeral services are at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the O'Sheim Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Visitation is from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Robert A. McBee
December 19, 1927 - August 27, 2001
Robert A. McBee, 73, Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away Monday, August 27, 2001, at his home.
He was born December 19, 1927 in Monon, the son of Allen D. and Lajune (Lowe) McBee.
He graduated from Monon High School in 1946. He had attended Purdue and was in the Army.
A brother and sister are deceased.
Funeral services were held at the Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Sue Marie McCabe
July 20, 1916 - April 8, 1993
Sue Marie McCabe, 76, formerly of Chalmers, died April 8 in Chicago. She was born July 20, 1971, at Cissna Park, Illinois, to Daniel and Marie Wann. She married Roland D. McCabe in 1941 and he died in 1976.
She graduated from Chalmers High School in 1934.
Surviving are three sons: Richard, Stephen and James, all of Chicago; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; four sisters, Beulah and Opal Altman, Chalmers, Lucille Lehmann, Belleville, Ill., and JoAnn Martin, Fort Wayne; four brothers, Earl Wann, Monticello, Ivan Wann, Mellott, Dean Wann, Tecumseh, Mich., and Robert Wann of Indianapolis.
One sister and one brother are deceased.
A memorial service was conducted in Chicago.
Marie G. Long McClean
June 1, 1903 - December 17, 1986
Marie G. Long McClean, 83, of Brookston, was found dead in her home Wednesday, December, 17, apparently of a heart attack.
Mrs. McClean retired in 1968 from Purdue University where she worked as a counterwoman in the Union Building.
Born June 1, 1903 in DeWitt County, Il., she had lived in the Brookston area since 1927 and attended West Lafayette schools.
She was married March 8, 1950, in West Lafayette to Clarence "Slim" McClean. He died October 29, 1960.
Mrs. McClean was a member of the Brookston Federated Church and Brookston American Legion Auxiliary.
Several nieces and nephews survive. Four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 19 at Hartzler Funeral Home with the Rev. B. James Walter officiating. Interment was in IOOF Cemetery
in Brookston.
Robert McClure
October 18, 1944 - December 3, 1989
Robert McClure, 45, Rt.1, Chalmers, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at 10:15 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. He had been ill for approximately six months.
He was born Oct. 18, 1944, to Oliver and Wilma Johnson McClure, in Lafayette. He was married Oct. 14, 1967, to Susan Mathew, who survives.
He was a farmer and a lifelong resident of the Wolcott and Chalmers area.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Reynolds and served in the National Guard from 1961-66.
Survivors include his mother of Wolcott; a son, Doug McClure, Chalmers; two daughters, Diana McClure, Chalmers and Jill Mc Clure, Wolcott; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Foutch, Monticello; and three brothers, Ralph, Freeport, Ill. and Richard and Ronald, both of Wolcott. A sister is deceased.
The funeral was conducted Wednesday in Foster Funeral Home at Wolcott, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ron Spyker officiating.
Burial was in Remington. Cemetery.
Jesse Lewis McCollum
July 31, 1914 - March 25, 1999
Jesse Lewis McCollum, 84, 313 E. North St., died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in Murdock Manor, Lafayette.
He was born on July 31, 1914 in Wolcott to Lewis Frank and Grace Hanawalt McCollum. He was married on Feb. 27, 1937 to Ruth Jarrett. She survives.
He graduated from Wolcott High School in 1932.
He sold farm implements for BC Fowler, Wolcott, and sold equipment for Arts Way Manufacturing, Wolcott. He was also a farmer.
He was a member of the Wolcott Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and trustee.
He was a 50-year member of Wolcott Lodge 180 F&AM.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Marvin of Wolcott and Jim of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother August of Noblesville; two sisters, Violet Cauble of Monticello and Velma Jean Hughes of Monon; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday at the Wolcott Baptist Church with the Rev. David Vanaman officiating. Foster Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
Burial was in the Memory Gardens at Rensselaer.
