Juanita Roark McVey
June 8, 1912 - September 3, 1998
Juanita Roark McVey, 86, a former Brookston resident, died Sept. 3, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi. She had been a resident of the Healthcare Center since August of 1994.
She was born in Tazewell, Tenn., June 8, 1912, to Ishmon and Mary Hassie Guy Roark. She was married Feb. 1, 1931, to Claude W. McVey Sr., in Tazewell, Tenn., and he died Jan. 4,1976.
She moved to Chalmers from Tazewell, Tenn., in 1953, and in March of 1975, she moved to Brookston.
She was a homemaker and worked for seven years at the Chalmers Cafe, as a cook.
She was a member of the Pittsburg Missionary Church.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 376 in Brookston.
Surviving are two sons, Claude Jr. of Summerset, Ky. and Paul of Indianapolis; three daughters, Helen Stanifer of Lafayette; Mrs. Harold Mabel Powell of Delphi and Nell Hart of Brookston 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.
A sister and grandson are deceased.
Funeral services were at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Pastor Nord Zootman officiating
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
Walter G. Melton
March 5, 1948 - November 16, 2002
Walter G. Melton, 54, of Monon died Saturday, November 16, 2002, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.
He had been ill for several years.
He was born on March 5, 1948, in Lafayette to Charles Glenwood Melton and Frieda J. Johnson Thomas. His mother survives.
He had lived in Monon all his life.
He was a private in the Army from 1967-68.
He was an avid CB radio operator.
Surviving with his fiancee, Nancy Lou Bolton of Knox, are a son, Walter G. Melton, Jr of Illinois; brothers, Charles Melton, of Monon and Richard Melton of Chalmers, and a sister, Diana Wertz, of Monon and four grandchildren.
Graveside services were this morning at Milroy Cemetery
in Lee with Rev. Steve Birch officiating. Kellogg Funeral Home was a charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Mabel F. Menyea
June 2, 1909 - September 19, 1998
Mabel F. Menyea, 89, 410 Tioga Road, Monticello, formerly of Buffalo, died Saturday, Sept. 19, at Twin Lakes Village, Monticello.
She was born June 2, 1909, to George A and Josie Mae Boze Calvin, in Buffalo. She was married June 2, to Eugene W. Menyea, in Chicago, and he survives.
She had lived all her life in Buffalo, and was a secretary at RCA in Monticello and retired in 1972 after 31 years.
She was a member of the Buffalo Christian Church.
She is survived, by her husband; a nephew, Kenneth Hinshaw, of Fairmount and several other nieces and nephews. A sister is deceased.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday at Buffalo Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank Hicks officiating.
Voorhis-Draper Funearl Home, Monticello, was in charge of the service.
Charles W. Metcalf
October 21, 1920 - August 23, 1999
Charles "Charlie" W. Metcalf, 78, a former resident of Lafayette, died Monday, Aug. 23, at Hentage Healthcare, West Lafayette.
He was born Oct. 21, 1920, to Charles A and Grace Ward Metcalf; in Chalmers. He was married Dec. 5, 1943, to Roselynn "Betty' Toumine, in Nevada She died Jan. 4, 1981.
He lived most of his life in Chalmers, moving to Lafayette in 1969. He lived at Rosewalk Commons from Dec. 1998 until going to Heritage last Thursday.
He graduated in 1938 from Chalmers High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a Staff/Seargeant with the 3706 AAF HU (BTC and Pilot School) and served in the Normandy Campaign, the Northern France Campaign and the Air Offensive Europe Campaign as an aircraft gunner from Sept. 1942 until Oct. 1945.
He was a retired conductor of the Monon Railroad, a brakeman and conductor on L&N Railroad and a passenger conductor on the Amtrack.
He was a 53-year member of the Chalmers American Legion Post 268, the 40&8211 of Monticello and a 51-year member of Old Rails and United Transportation Union.
He is survived by two daughters, Diana M. Schenker Butler of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Fred (Charleen) Deckard of Brookston; a son, John Metcalf; Monticello and six grandchildren.
Three brothers, Howard, Fred and Thomas Metcalf; a son, Charles and a daughter, Elaina Metcalf, are deceased.
Funeral service was Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.
Entombment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens with military rites by the Chalmers American Legion Post 268.
Memorials may be given to the American Legion Post 268.
Thomas Ward Metcalf
March 27, 1912 - June 7, 1994
Thomas Ward Metcalf, 82, Lafayette, died Tuesday, June 7, in the emergency room of Home Hospital, Lafayette.
He was born March 27, 1912 in Chalmers to Charles A. and Grace Ward Metcalf. He married Marie Burget in Indianapolis on July 3, 1936, and she survives.
He was a 1930 graduate of Chalmers High School.
He retired from ALCOA in 1972 after 33 years of employment in various management positions.
He was a member of Congress Street United Methodist Church, Lafayette, the ALCOA 25 Year
Retirees Club, Masonic Lodge F & AM, Tippecanoe Masonic Lodge No. 492 and AARP.
Surviving with his wife are one son, Garry W. of Overland Park, KS; one brother, Charles W. of Lafayette; and three grandsons.
Two brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 10, in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Ronald Harshman officiated.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Joseph W. Meyer
October 10, 1897 - January 4,1987
Joseph W. Meyer, 93, of Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, died early Wednesday morning at the Regency Place in Lafayette. He was born October 10, 1897.
A retired farmer, he had married Myrtle Mae Leader on December 19, 1920. She died January 4, 1987.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Virginia) Luck of Brookston, 2 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Hartzler Funeral Home with the Funeral at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, West Lafayette.
Virgil Robert Meyer
November 27, 1924 - January 11, 1991
Virgil Robert Meyer, 66, Reynolds, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 11, at 10:50 a.m. in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born Nov. 27, 1924, to Charles and Elizabeth Harris Meyer, in Wolcott. He was married Sept. 24, 1944, to Rosemary L. Farmer, in Reynolds, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Reynolds and attended Lake Shafer Christian Center, Monticello. He retired from RCA in Monticello, 1982, after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the Reynolds Town Board and Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Also, surviving are three sons: Robert V., Brookston; Jeffrey D., Forest, Va., and Raymond C., San Pierre; three daughters: Karen S. Cowger, Linda L. Carter and Denise J. Brown, all of Monticello; a brother, Donald, Reynolds; and 16 grandchildren. A brother is deceased.
Services were conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home, Monticello, with Pastor Nate Pyle officiating.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, where military graveside rites were conducted.
Madaline M. Mikesell
March 18, 1913 - October 1, 1994
Madaline M. Mikesell, 81, Monticello, died Saturday, Oct. 1, in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette, following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Chalmers on March 18, 1913 to Alvin and Lillie Newby Allison. She married William A. Mikesell in Winamac on Sept. 22, 1931. He died on Sept. 28, 1972.
She had been a waitress at several local restaurants for many years.
She was a former member of the Oak Grove Christian Church, and former member of Royal Neighbors, and a Pocahontas of the Redman Lodge.
Surviving are one daughter, Georgia A. Porter of Monticello; one sister, Laura Spoor of Greenfield; one granddaughter, Mrs. Mark (Christine L.) German of Monticello; and one grandson, Kevin D. Porter of Dayton, Ohio.
Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
The funeral was held Wednesday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald Arterburn officiated.
Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Monticello.
