Jesse Ned Sims

March 1, 1907 - December 7, 1992
Jesse Ned Sims, 85, 305 E. Eighth St., Brookston, died Monday, Dec. 7, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient since Sept. 25.

He was born March 1, 1907, to Willie and Savanah Wood Sims, in Tompkinsville, Ky. He was married Aug. 10, 1930, to Ruby High, in Tompkinsville, and she survives.

He moved to Brookston, in 1937, where he was a farmer and employee of National Homes, Corp., Lafayette, retiring in 1974.

He was a charter member and elder of the Brookston Church of Christ.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters; Mrs. Dave (Helen) Young, West Lafayette, Mrs. Lee (Wilma) Strickland, Huntsville, Alabama; six sisters: Evelyn Horton, Brookston, Christine Poindexter, Wolcott, Mary Short and Ada Arms, both of Indianapolis, Maude Hamilton, Celina, Tenn. and Ollie Smith, Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Four sisters, a brother and infant daughter are deceased.

The funeral was today at 2 p.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Bill Romans officiating.

Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Ruby High Sims

July 3, 1911 - December 11, 1999
Ruby High Sims, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 11th at St. Anthony Healthcare Center in Lafayette.

She was born July 3, 1911 in Kentucky to Loranzie and Vernie Hurd High.

She married Jessie Ned Sims on Aug. 10, 1930 in Tompkinsville, KY. He died December 7, 1992.

She moved to Brookston in 1937.

She was a homemaker.

She was a charter member of Brookston Church of Christ.

She had lived in Otterbein Healthcare Center before being admitted to St. Anthony's in November 1999.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Dave (Helen) Young of West Lafayette and Mrs. Lee (Wilma) Strickland of Huntsville, Ala, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, one sister and one infant daughter are deceased.

Funeral service was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Shannon Toye officiating.

Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association.

Joyce Louise (Hauptli) Slawson

April 22, 1935 - January 8, 2002
Joyce Louise (Hauptli) Slawson, died January 8, 2002 at the home of her daughter, Dixie, in Nampa, ID. Following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 22, 1935 in Francesville, Ind., where she attended school and was a member of the First Christian Church. She was the daughter of Edwin Hauptli and Dorothy (Moncel) Briles.

She moved with her family to Idaho in 1975. She owned and operated her own business. Joyce & Co. Maid Service, for the past 15 years. She loved her family, Idaho, corresponding with friends, traditional "real" as she called it country music, singing, dancing, painting and reading.

She is survived by her five children; Dorothy (David) Trusty-Lagerson, Stanton, CA; Ed (Karen) Trusty, Meridian, ID; Dixie (Jerry) Hayenga, Nampa, ID; Wendy (Nathaniel) Smith, Caldwell, ID; Jim (Gina) Slawson, Kuna ID.

Other survivors include her mother Dorothy Briles, Monon, IN; sisters Cheryl Smith, Michigan City, IN and Sallie Blazer, Monticello, IN; nephew Aaron Smith, Michigan City, IN; niece, Patience Cooley and grandniece Samantha Lopez, Monticello.

Her grandchildren; Vanessa Ditropoulos and Dick Ditropoulos, CA, Jessica (Brandon) Ehinger, John Fisher, Joe Hayenga, Bill Slawson, Colten List, Jim Miller, Jeff Miller, Andrea Billings, Adam Perez, Alicia Trusty, Zack Wood and Jacob Bingle, ID, Kelly Scott, IN, Josh Lagerson and Megan Lagerson, CA.

Her great grandchildren; Riley Aldrich, Mason Ehinger, Cheyenne Billings, and Cadin Perez.

Her father, Edwin Hauptli and brother Gary Joe Hauptli preceded her in death.

Services were at the Alsip Funeral Chapel in Nampa, ID on Monday.

Louise Summers Slayton

June 22, 1897 - January 21, 1994
Louise Summers Slayton, 96, formerly of Brookston, died Friday, Jan. 21, at Heritage Healthcare in West Lafayette where she had lived since August 1990.

She was born June22, 1897 in Brookston to Amos and Anna Sipple Summers. She married Amos W. Slayton on Feb. 27, 1917 in Monticello. He died July 18, 1975.

She was a homemaker. She and her husband owned a Rt. 2, Brookston, farm for many years, moving to Brookston in September 1966.

She was a member of the Badger Grove Community Baptist Church and its Missionary Society, Frontier Senior Citizens, and a 63-year member of the Round Grove Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include one son, Russell of Lafayette; two daughters, Mrs. Roscoe (Betty) Deckard of Rt. 2, Brookston, and Mrs. Frank (Gladys) Hodge, Lafayette; nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

A daughter, a grandson and several brothers and sisters are deceased.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 24, at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston, the Rev. Bob Rawlins officiated.

Burial was in Grandview Cemetery in West Lafayette.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Thelma Smith-Pratt

August 2, 1930 - May 3, 2001
Thelma Louise Smith-Pratt, 70 of Muncie, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at her residence.

She was born August 2, 1930 in Fentress County, Tenn. to J. Stoke and Mary Meek Stephens. She was married to Harold Pratt of Monon, and be survives.

She had lived in Muncie since 1947.

She was employed with Ball Brothers, which has changed its name to Ball Corporation, Ball State University and Brooks Fashions in the Muncie Mall.

She was a 50+ year member of Old Towne Hill Southern Baptist Church in Muncie.

She square danced for several years, most notably on WLBC's 49er Jamboree.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and friend. She was and is still deeply loved and will truly be missed. She is in God's loving hands now.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Diannia S. (Joseph) Strupeck, Concord, Calif.; a son, Bradley W. Smith, Muncie; stepchildren; Harold Richard Pratt, Monticello and Carol S. (James) McGill of Monon; brothers. Glenns D. Stephens of Pleasant View, Tenn; Glenard E. Stephens, Mainsville, Ohio, and Leonard Z. Stephens, Ashland City, Tenn; a sister, Wilma Groce of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Kelly McGill, Stacy McGill, Nicole (Jerry) Holeman, Karen McGill and Leslie (Michael) Skjersaa; several great-stepgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Darleen L. Smith and her first husband, Warren Q. Smith are deceased.

Services were Sunday at Old Towne Hill Southern Baptist Church with burial in Tomlinson Cemetery, Muncie.

Arthur R. Smith

February 24, 1915 - June 21, 1990
Arthur R. Smith, 75, 2347 N. 25th St., Lafayette, died Thursday, June 21, at 10:30 p.m. in Home Hospital, Lafayette. He had been a patient there one week.

He was a lab technician at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratory in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue and retired in 1980.

He was born Feb. 24, 1915, and a native of Idaville. He was married Feb. 6, 1942, to Marsella Beasy, in Lafayette. She survives.

Mr. Smith was an Army Air Corps veteran, and served during World War II as a master sergeant with the 68th Troop Carrier Squadron, 433rd Troop Carrier Group.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; Tippecanoe Masonic Lodge 492; Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis; and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Kay Schrader, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Jane Wakeland, Culver. Other survivors include 6 grandchildren, I great . grandchild. A brother, Walter, preceded in death.

The service was at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Gary Forbes officiating.

Interment was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Edna M. Smith

January 9, 1912 - December 15, 1999
Edna M. Smith, 87, Monticello, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, at White Co. Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for about a year.

She was born Jan. 9, 1912, to Albert and Myrtle Clinger Mitchell in Jasper County. She married Ernest T. Smith in Jasper County, July 10, 1933. He died September 7, 1988.

She was a resident of Lake View Commons in Monticello. She had lived most of her life in Monon.

She had been a waitress and part owner of the Sugar Bowl Cafe in Monon, retiring in 1954 and was homemaker.

She attended Medaryville Christian Church.

She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Monon.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Joseph "Jeanette" Schnepp of Monticello; two granddaughters, Debbie Chenoweth and Diana Smith, both of Lafayette; four grandsons, Ernest T. Smith III of Carlisle, Terry Smith of Florida and Michael Schnepp and John Schnepp, both of Tennessee; a brother, Raymond Mitchell of Winamac; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two sons, a brother and sister are deceased.

Funeral services were Friday at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. Mark A. Pittman officiating.

Burial was in Monon Cemetery, Monon.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Monticello.

Inge M. Smith

December 24, 1921 - November 12, 1991
Inge M. Smith, 69, R.2, Brookston, Horseshoe Bend Addition, died Nov. 12, in a house fire.

She was born Dec. 24, 1921, to Helmut and Maria Urbinski, in Munich, Germany. She was married Nov. 12, 1954, to Mahlon G. Smith, in Munich, and he expired July 7,1989.

She moved in 1955, to the United States and became a naturalized citizen in 1956.

She had been employed in England, Oklahoma and Kansas, until 1976, at numerous Army/Air Force commissaries.

She was an associate member of the Disabled American Veterans of Lafayette and member of American Legion Auxiliary and National Audubon Society.

Surviving are a son, Peter M., Catlin, Ill.; one brother and sister, both of Germany.

A private burial service was conducted with Baker Funeral Home, Flora, in charge of arrangements.
