James (Fred) Smith
April 29, 1939 - August 13, 1999
James Smith, 60, 622 Jackson St., Brownsburg, Ind., died at 1:30 a.m., Friday, August 13, at his home He was born April 29, 1939 in Monon and was the son of Clarence L. Smith and Edith 0. Overton, who preceded him in death. Also two brothers and three sisters are deceased.
He married Wanda M. Hughes and had resided in Brownsburg for 27 years.
He was a mechanics helper for Citizen Gas and Coke Utility for 27 years. and was previously a barber for Eddie Smith's Barber Shop in Speedway. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1958-1962.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda, a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Harlan of Kokomo, a son, SSGT Randall J. Smith, Korea, a brother, Jen-y Smith, Tampa, Florida, two sisters, Norma Curwick, Monon and Julia Perrin, Floral City, Florida and three grandchildren, Bryce, Gabriel and Whitney Harlan, Kokomo.
Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 17 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg. Burial was in Lincoln Memorial Gardens in Zionsville, Indiana.
Luther A. Smith
February 16, 1902 - January 6, 1999
Luther Arnold Smith, 96, of Monon, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in White Co. Memorial Hospital. He had resided at Monticello Healthcare Center for 15 months.
He was born Feb. 16, 1902, to Samuel G. and Myrtle Hemphill Smith, in Brown County. He was married March 14, 1934, to Iva L. Jones in Monticello. She died Oct. 1, 1993.
He had been employed at ALCOA in Lafayette and was retired. He had been self-employed as a carpenter for several years. He was also a custodian of the Monon United Methodist Church for 20 years.
He had lived in Monon most of his life.
He was a member of the Monon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a son, Alvin F. of Monon; two grandchildren; a step-grandson; and five great grandchildren.
A sister, two half sisters and two half brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Friday at Kellogg Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Kehlhofer officiating.
Burial was in Monon Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Maxine W. Smith
January 24, 1918 - February 5, 1995
Maxine W. Smith, 77, Rossville, IN., passed away Sunday evening, Feb. 5, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 24, 1918, in Greencastle, to Oscar G. and Ida (Fry) Williams. From age 12, she was reared in the home of her aunt, Hazel P. Williams. She was a graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and attended the Indiana Business College in Indianapolis.
She was married Dec. 17, 1938, to Joyce S. "Bud" Smith, in Indianapolis, and he survives. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were residents of the Remington, Ind. area 1939-1964 and had been residents of rural Frankfort and Rossville, Ind., since 1964.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Rossville, Owen Township Extension Homemaker's Club and had been an active member of the Present Day Club at Rossville.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, John S. Smith, Walton, Ind.; three daughters, Patricia S. Sheldon and husband, James C., Greencastle, Ind..; Barbara L. Lawson and husband, Ed, Chalmers, Ind. and Maryanne England and husband, Danny, Lafayette, Ind.; a brother, Charles C. Emerich, Chillicothe, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel.
Funeral services were Wednesday, at 1 p.m. in the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home in Greencastle, with Rev. Allen C. Weldy officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery
in Greencastle.
Memorials may be given to the Visiting Nurse Hospice, 2323 Shoshone Court, Lafayette, IN 47905-5913.
Pauline Swatts Page Smith
March 27, 1916 - January 29, 1994
Pauline Swatts Page Smith, 77, formerly of Brookston, died Saturday night, Jan. 29, in George Davis Manor, West Lafayette. She had been a resident there since February 1989.
She was born in Battle Ground on March 27, 1916 to Irvin and Sadie Swatts Page. She married Ray Kenneth Smith in Monticello on April 24, 1937. He died Feb. 8, 1983.
She was a 1937 graduate of Brookston High School.
She was a homemaker who worked with her husband on a farm.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Mrs. Ned (Marilyn) Fulkerson and Mrs. Ivan (Rosemary) Phillips, both of Wolcott, Mrs. Jerry (Jean Ann) Kuhn of Amboy, and Mrs. John (Carol) Watkins of Rt. 2, Brookston; three brothers, Paul Vernon Page of Lafayette, James Page of Rt. 1, Battle Ground, and Calvin Page of Florida; one sister, Mrs. William (Wilma) McPeek of Danville, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
One brother, one infant sister and a granddaughter are deceased.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston, the Rev. Gene Ansell officiated.
Burial was in IOOF Brookston Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, George Davis Manor and the Leukemia Society of America.
Robert C. Smith
September 5, 1929 - December 27, 2002
Robert C. Smith, 73, of Marion, Indiana died Friday, December 27, 2002 at the VA Northern Healthcare in Marion.
He was born September 5, 1929 in Rensselaer, Ind., the son of Wayne and Verneice Gray Smith. He had lived most of his lifetime in the Monon area. He graduated from Monon High School in 1947.
He was never married. He served as a Pvt. in the U.S. Army Signal Corp.
He is survived by three brothers: Richard (Helen) Smith, Crown Point; James Smith, Monticello and Reid (Betty) Smith of Buffalo.
Preceding him in death were two brothers; John Smith and Charles Smith and two sisters; Marjorie Brown and Betty Smith.
Graveside services were at Monon Chapel Cemetery
Monday with Pastor Matthew Pickut officiating.
Kellogg Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
Memorials may be made to American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Monon Chapter.
Barnard [i.e. Bernard] Dale Snodgrass
March 21, 1930 - March 27, 2001
Bernard Dale Snodgrass, 71, of Buffalo, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at 7:40 a.m., in Buffalo.
He had lived in Buffalo since 1992, moving there from Escondido, California.
He was born March 21, 1930, to Elmer and Edna Honn Snodgrass, in Brook.
He had served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1951.
He was a retired mechanic and owned Dale's Automotive and Repair in Escondido, Calif., for five years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 81.
He is survived by a daughter, Kitty Fish, of Remington; a son, Kelly D. Snodgrass of Escondido, Calif.; sisters, Florence (Armon) Linder, Wanda Dilling and Ruth Unland, all of Lafayette; six grandchildren and a great grandchild.
A daughter and two brothers are deceased.
Services were Saturday in the Gerts Funeral Home, Brook, with Pastor Matt Goldsberry officiating.
Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Brook. Memorials may be given to the family.
Nathan LeRoy Snowberger
June 16, 1981 - May 31, 1991
Nathan LeRoy Snowberger, 9, Chalmers, died at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday in a farm accident at the home of his parents.
He was born June 16, 1981 in Rensselaer to Phillip and June Jessie Snowberger, who survive. He had just completed the fourth grade at Frontier Elementary School, Brookston.
He was a member of the White County 4-H Horse and Pony Club and member of Cub Scout Pack No. 3126 havIng attained his Webelos badge. He was also a member of Team Orange in the Frontier baseball program.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Reynolds.
Surviving with his parents are three brothers. Keith, and twin brothers Erick and Evan, all at home; Maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Paul "Bill" Jessie, Reynolds; Maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Raymond Jessie, Fowler; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Snowberger, Chalmers.
The funeral was Monday in St. James Lutheran Church, Reynolds, the Rev. Stephen E. Koenig officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge.
Burial was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds.
Dorothy M. Sollars
October 29, 1916 - May 4, 2000
Dorothy M. Sollars, 83, of Monticello, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Monticello Healthcare Center.
She was born in Indianapolis on Oct. 29, 1916, to Archie and Emma W. Warden Bogue. She married Carl T Sollars in Monticello on May 16, 1942. He died on Nov. 4, 1971.
She was a graduate of Monticello High School and had lived in Liberty Township most of her life.
She helped her late husband Carl on their dairy farm that they owned since 1946.
She attended Pike Creek Church of the Brethren, was a member of the Pike Creek Women's Fellowship and gave devotions.
She enjoyed quilting and sewing.
She is survived by sons, Gary (Diana) Sollars of Monticello and Carl (Lana) Sollars of Granger; brothers Glen Bogue of Dearbom Heights, Mich., and Myron Dean Bogue of Vanderbilt, Mich., grandchildren, Julie (Aaron) Clow of Elkhart, Bradley and Larissa Sollars of Granger, and Joshua and Carol Sollars or Monticello; great-granddaughter, Rachel Clow of Elkhart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
An infant son, Warren J. Sollars, three sisters and a brother are deceased.
Funeral service was Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home; Pastor Jason S. Metzinger officiated.
Private family graveside services were on Sunday.
Della Marie Piatt Zootman
December 3, 1916 to January 12, 1998
Della Marie Piatt Zootman, 81, a resident of St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi and formerly of Brookston died Monday January 12, 1998 at the Healthcare Center. She had lived at the Healthcare Center since 1994.
She was born December 3, 1916 in Wolcott, Indiana, the daughter of Henry Ervon and Stella Vanessa Kendal Piatt.
She married Wallace Max Zootman in Monticello on August 23, 1942. He died in June 1978. The family had lived in Buffalo prior to moving to Brookston in 1978. She had lived in Brookston until moving to the Healthcare Center in 1994.
She was retired from Purdue University in 1979 where she had worked as a payroll accountant in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
She was a member of the Brookston United Methodist Church and Prairie Homemaker Extension Club. She served as an officer of the Community Van Committee. She enjoyed her crafts and china painting.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Mamdouh (Ruth) Baker, Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Ted (Peggy) Lewellen of Brookston, Ms. Berma Zootman of Lafayette and one son, Rev. Nord Zootman of Delphi.
One brother, Kendall Piatt, Monticello, and one sister Helen Arthur of Monticello also survive. She had 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
One brother and 3 sisters preceded her in death.
Services will be Thursday, January 15, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. in the Brookston United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Kurowski officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery
in Brookston. Friends may call at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. and 1 hour prior to the service in the church.
Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Delphi or the Brookston United Methodist Church.
