Margaret Dawes Mahin
September 18, 1900 - December 20, 1987
Word has been received here of the death of Margaret Dawes Mahin, 87, at Town and Country Convalescent Center, Tampa, Florida, Dec. 20, 1987, where she had been a patient for one year. Mrs. Mahin resided at 3811 North Oak Drive, Apt. E-11 Tampa, Florida 33611, since Feb. 1983, moving to Tampa from Bradenton, Florida, where she had been a winter resident since 1962.
She was born at Delphi, Ind., Sept. 18, 1900, to Josella Roach Cowdin and Thomas E. Cowdin. Her marriage was to Ralph Holwerda Mahin, Dec. 28, 1921 at Monticello, Ind. She was a former school teacher and lived in the Brookston area most of her life. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Old Springboro Gang Homemakers Club, and had been affiliated with the Badger Grove Community Church.
Mrs. Mahin is survived by one son, Ralph Cowdin Mahin, daughter-in-law, Bette Wilinson Mahin, granddaughter, Mrs. David (Lisa Ranae) Champlain, great grandson, Justin Grant Champlain all of Tampa, Florida. Her late husband died July 20, 1987 and one brother, Thomas J. Cowdin preceded her in death. A daughter Imogene Mahin, died Dec. 21, 1943 at age 10 at Brookston, Ind.
A double memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Mahin will be held Sunday, May 1,1988, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 101 West 4th St., Brookston, Ind. at 4 p.m. Commencing at 2 p.m. a visitation and fellowship with family and friends will be held preceding the Memorial Service conducted by Rev. Eugene Parker, former Pastor of Badger Grove Church. It is r quested that in lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity and Badger Grove Community Baptist Church. It is also requested of those attending to please bring any photo, old or recent, of either or both Margaret or Ralph, or of any event touching their lives so it can be shared in remembrance of them by friends and family.
Private inurnment will be on the family cemetery plot at IOOF Cemetery, Delphi, Ind.
Helen (Richardson) Mansfield
August 5, 1917 - May 31, 2003
Helen (Richardson) Mansfield, 85, of Jensen Beach, Fla., and formerly a Brookston resident died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart, Florida.
She was born August 5, 1917 in White County the daughter of James and Mary Mattin Richardson, and lived in Brookston for 56 years before moving to Florida where she has resided for 23 years.
She worked as a cook at several Brookston restaurants.
She was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge.
She married Claude Mansfield at Monticello on October 2, 1936. He died December 27, 1995.
Other survivors include five sons, Claude Jr. (Joyce) Mansfield, of Rensselaer, Jerry (Janelle) Mansfield of Jensen Beach, Fla., Bradley (Diane) Mansfield of Brookston, Dennis (Mary) Mansfield of St. Cloud, Fla., Todd (Darla) Mansfield and Joe (Kathy) Richardson both of Brookston; two daughters, Sue (Noah) Wells and Barb (T.C.) Kerr both of Whittier, N.C.; two brothers, Jimmy (Eileen) Richardson of St. Cloud, Fla. and Rene (Sharon) Richardson of Lafayette; three sisters, Velma Oilar, Jensen Beach, FL, Rogene (Eugene) Shedrow and Betty (Don) Taylor, both of Lafayette, In. She had 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
One brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Hartzler Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be at the Brookston United Methodist church at 10 a[.]m[.] on Thursday with Rev. Jan Dimick & Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials may be made to the Brookston United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Estelle Marshall
April 1, 1906 - February 12, 1987
Estelle "Eck" Marshall, 80, Chalmers, a retired White Co. farmer, was dead on arrival at Home Hospital at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12.
Mr. Marshall had been a patient at Americana Nursing Center since Jan. 16.
He was born in White County, April 1, 1906. He attended Chalmers schools and was a member of the Chalmers Community Church and the Monticello Moose Lodge.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Tessie Rogers, Ashland, Ohio; Mrs. Edith Oliak, Douglas, Arizona and Mrs. Goldia Shigley, Chalmers.
Three sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
Services were Saturday, at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Shuman officiating. Interment was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Helen Marie Martz
December 11, 1917 - October 31, 2002
Helen Marie Martz, 84, of Monticello, and formerly of Monon died at Twin Lakes Village Nursing Home in Monticello on Thursday, October 31, 2002.
She was born in Jasonville on December 11, 1917, to Clement and Helen Marie Egan Lacy. She married William Martz at Indianapolis on August 18, 1934. He died in 1967.
She was a graduate of St. Agnes Academy, Indianapolis. She was a real estate agent working for several years for Merrell's Real Estate Agency, Lafayette; and as a L.M. Berry sales representative for several years.
She grew up in Indianapolis and moved to Monon in 1960.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary (Gary) Cooley of Monon and Helen Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Lee Schuman of Cameron Park, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A son and two brothers are deceased.
Visitation was Sunday at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon. Services were Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Reynolds with Monsignor Robert Sell officiating.
Burial was Monday in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Dr. Richard E. Matteson
April 8, 1922 - March 24, 2001
Dr. Richard E. Matteson, 78, Brookston, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at his residence.
He was born April 8, 1922, in Hamilton, Ohio the son of Roy E. and Elaine A. Kohler Matteson. He married Virginia Campbell on September 1, 1985 in Detroit. She survives.
He was a 1939 graduate of Central High School in Detroit and received his bachelor's degree in 1949 from Michigan State.
He owned and operated Prairie Veterinary Service in Brookston since 1953. The practice closed in September 1999.
He was a World War II veteran who served in the U. S. Army as a Forward Observer, Field Artillery, and Battery Commanding Officer in Luzon, Philippines, with the 32nd lnfanty Division. He served in the Korean Conflict as a Battery Commander with AAA Bn.
Surviving with his wife are four daughters, Mary Gretchen (James) Brown of Texas, Ann Inaga (Charles) Spencer of Colville, Wash., Jean Kirstan (Richard) Bliss of Boise, Idaho and Nan Elga Matteson of Cincinnati; a son, Craig Emerson (Micki) Matteson of Naperville, Ill; a son-in-law, Victor Xavier de Quinteros of LaPaz, Bolivia; three step granddaughters, Pat Campbell of Cupertino, Calif., Sue Campbell of San Jose, Calif. And Robin Campbell of Lansing, Mich.; a step son, Michael (Patty) Campbell of Denver, Colo.; one step granddaughter; and 14 grandchildren.
A daughter, Aylo Heike de Quinteros, died in 1992.
His funeral was Tuesday at Brookston Federated Church with Rev. Dr. Stuart Robertson officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
Burial was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.

Chester D. May
August 17, 1898 - October 5, 1998
Chester D. May, 100, of 413 East 7th Street, Brookston died at Heritage Healthcare Center in West Lafayette at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, October 5th.
He was born in Round Grove Township on August 17, 1898 the son of Edward and Alice Park May. He married Ruth Marie Vanderbilt on June 7, 1928. She died February 4, 1974.
Mr. May retired from Standard Oil in 1963 after 32 years working in the Brookston area.
He is survived by a son Myron May of Plainfield, IN, 2 grandchildren Mark and Linda May and 2 great grandchildren.
One brother Dr. Glen H. May of West Point, IN also survives.
He was preceded in death by a sister and 4 brothers.
Funeral services will be at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday with Rev. Mark Kurowski officiating.
Friends may call at the Hartzler Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. today.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Virginia M. McCombs
December 19, 1922 - June 7, 2003
Virginia M. McCombs, 80, of Buffalo, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born at Buffalo on December 19, 1922, to James and Lula Mclntire Hickman. She married Phillip McCombs at Spartanburg, S.C. on May 20, 1945. He died April 20, 1980.
She had lived in the Buffalo community all her life. She was a 1941 graduate of Buffalo High School.
She was an active member of the Buffalo Christian Church and was the official welcome/attendance keeper at the church. She was a member of the Liberty Township Home Extension Club and the Buffalo Fire Department Auxiliary since the start of the organization.
She had lived on a farm and had worked at the old Monticello RCA Plant when her husband went away during World War II.
She loved playing euchre and bunko.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy (Doug) Kammerer of Monticello and Patsy (Michael) Anderson of Monticello, a son Douglas (Christine) McCombs of Monticello, and eight grandchildren.
Daughters Debora and Pamela McCombs, a sister, step-sister, step-brother and step-father are deceased.
Services were this morning at the Buffalo Christian Church with Greg Nydegger officiating.
Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Christian Church or Buffalo Fire Department.
Miller-Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello was in charge of services.
Dorothy M. McMullen
March 10, 1923 - June 29, 2002
Dorothy M. McMullen, 79, of Monticello, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at her residence.
She was born March 10, 1923, in White County, to Herman and Susan Wickham Zarse. She married Marion J. McMullen on March 17, 1942, in Reynolds. He survives.
She lived in White County all her life. She was a 1941 graduate of Monticello High School.
She worked at Bryan Manufacturing and the Schultz store, both in Monticello.
She enjoyed flowers and gardening, as well as the Chicago Cubs.
Surviving with her husband are sons, Thomas M. McMullen of Carmel and David L. McMullen of Pendleton; sister, Mary Pherson of Monticello; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A brother and a sister are deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, with the Rev. Patti Payntor officiating.
Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
