Dewey William Stackhouse
March 15, 1898 - May 21, 1995
Dewey William Stackhouse, 97, formerly of Battle Ground, died Sunday, May 21, at 11:07, in Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette.
He was born March 15, 1898, to Edward and Mary Alice Bower Stackhouse, in West Lafayette.
He graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1918, and attended ROTC at Purdue. He was a World War I Army veteran.
He retired from Monon Shops, Lafayette, in 1967, after 50 years of employment. For 10 years he lived in Tippecanoe Villa and at Heritage Healthcare since June 2, 1993.
He was a member of the Battle Ground United Methodist Church and Battle Ground Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 313. He received his 75-year pin, March 5, 1995.
Surviving are a son, Robert of Brookston; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Norma) Crowell, R.2, Brookston; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister are deceased.
The funeral was today at 11 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Lewis Ruman officiating.
Burial was in Sandridge Cemetery, West Lafayette.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Battle Ground United Methodist Church.
Arthur H. Staley
November 18, 1913 - March 30, 1999
Arthur Haul Staley, 85, of Brookston, died Tuesday, March 30, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette, where he had been a patient since Friday.
He was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Knoxville, Tenn. He was married May 1, 1932, to Bertha Crawford in Albany, Ky. and she died Dec. 23, 1998.
He was retired from farming and had worked on the Waugh farms in Brookston.
Surviving are three sons, Bob at Lafayette; Roy of West Lafayette and Jerry of Kingman; three daughters, Mrs. Benny (Mary) Henry of Crawfordsville; Mrs. Mike (Betty) Priest of Indianapolis and Mrs. Lee (Charlotte) Turner of Brookston; 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
An infant son, a son and two brothers are deceased.
Funeral service was Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Harvey Long officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Cecil F. Stangle
March 20, 1910 - January 10, 1999
Cecil F. Stangle, 88, Kewanna, died in Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac, Sunday, January 10th.
He was born March 20, 1910, the Alben and Nellie Kistler Stangle, in White County. He was married June 28, 1931, to Dorothy Watson, in Cass County, and she survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Helm Street Church of God, Logansport. He attended the Church of the Nazarene, Winamac.
He graduated in 1928, from Royal Center High School.
Survivors are 2 sons, Edwin Stangle, Monticello; David Stangle, Kewanna: a daughter, Joan Piercy, Apache Junction, AZ.; a sister Calesey Shaw, Monticello;2 brothers, Raymond Stangle and Leroy Stangle, both of Monticello. Also 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 14, at Harrison Metzger Funeral Home, Royal Center with Rev. Gary Jordan officiating. Burial was in Bell Center Cemetery, Idaville.
Memorials may be given to Alzheimer's Association and Helm Street Church of God Building Fund.
Paul E. Stead
October 11, 1929 - September 30, 1991
Paul E. Stead, 61, Brookston, died Monday, Sept. 30, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been since Thursday. He had been in failing health since June.
He was born Oct. 11, 1929, to Joseph Emmitt and Nora Rayburn Stead, in Lafayette. He was married May 19, 1950, to Birdena Clawson, in Logansport. She survives.
He moved from Lafayette, to Brookston, 34 years ago.
For 41 years he worked at Ross Gear Division of TRW, Lafayette. He went on disability leave May 29th.
He was an artist and in the golf league at TRW.
Other survivors are two daughters; Mrs. William (Nora) Bogan, Lafayette and Mrs. Denise Roudebush, Brookston; two sons, Roger and Joe, both of Lafayette; a brother, Russell, Lafayette; three sisters; Mrs. Clois Kull and Mrs. Charlotte Spurgeon, both of Lafayette and Mrs. Shirley Wagner, West Lafayette; six grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
The funeral was 10 a.m., Wednesday, in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Richard Wisenberger officiating.
Burial was in Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette.
Virginia Lou Stepp
September 23, 1928 - January 17, 2001
Virginia Lou Stepp, 72, of Wheatfield, IN died Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at her residence.
She was born September 23, 1928 in Francesville, the daughter of Howard L. and Martha Marie Waymore Page.
She married Lindberg Stepp on January 25, 1947 in Rensselaer, IN. He survives.
She attended Francesville schools and was a member of the TeaBerry Hill Estate Church. She had worked at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, in the laundry and housekeeping departments for 15 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Francis) martin, Rensselaer; a son, Bill (Donna) Stepp, Wheatfield and four brothers, Eugene (Iris) Page, Francesville; Raymond (Joan) Page, Monon, Morris (Betty) Cain, LaPorte and Ralph (Donna) Cain, Rolling Prairie. Four grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, 1 brother and one granddaughter.
Funeral services was Saturday, January 20, 2001 at Jackson Funeral Service with Elmer Conley officiating. Burial was in DeMotte Cemetery, DeMotte.
Memorials may be made to Jasper County Hospital.
Clifford B. Sterner
May 31, 1910 - March 3, 1994
Clifford B. Sterner, 83, of Sarasota, FL, died Thursday afternoon, Mar. 3, at Doctors Hospital in Sarasota.
He was born May 31, 1910 in Chalmers to William Henry and Laura Belle Burget Sterner. On Sept. 22, 1928, he married Violet Cossel in Monticello; and she survives.
He moved to Florida in 1989 after retiring from farming.
He was a member of the Chalmers Community Church and a charter member of the Chalmers Civics Club.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Gordon K. and Norman D. both of Sarasota; one sister, Mrs. Anna Harner of Mulberry; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
One sister is deceased.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston, the Rev. Loren Shuman officiated.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the American Lung Association.
Gordon K. Sterner
January 16, 1930 - December 30, 2001
Gordon K. Sterner, 71, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Chalmers, died December 30, 2001 in Veterans Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was born January 16, 1930 in Chalmers, Ind.
He was an Air Force veteran of four years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 312, Onesco, Fla., and belonged to the VFW Post in Monticello.
Surviving are a son, Kevin and a granddaughter Heather Sterner of Calumet, Mich., his mother Violet R. Sterner, and brother Norman, both of Sarasota, Fla.
Burial was in Veterans national Cemetery
in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Chester J. Sterrett
December 5, 1914 - February 18, 1987
Chester J. Sterrett, 72, 4953 E. county road 900N, Battle Ground, died Feb. 18, in St Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette.
Sterrett was an organizer of the annual Battle Ground Steam and Power Show which began in 1981.
He was born in Tippecanoe Twp., Tippecanoe Co., Dec. 5, 1914, to Sumner and Clara McKinley Sterrett.
He was first married to Opal Martin, Oct. 25, 1933. She died Oct. 28, 1969. His second marriage was to Florence L Capes, June 1970, who survives.
He was a farmer and collected antique machinery as a hobby and owned threshing machines which he frequently took to fairs and special shows around the country.
He was a member of the former Liberty Chapel EUB Church and a member of the Battle Ground Antique Club.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Robert J. Sterrett and Fred Sterrett, both of Lafayette, Cass Sterrett and Lynn Sterrett, both of Battle Ground; two daughters, Mrs. Otis (Lora) Anderson and Mrs. Gregory (Finetta) Edgell, both of Battle Ground; a step daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Watkins, Idaville, two stepsons, Charles Capes, Monticello and Ralph Capes, Argos; one brother Elva Sterrett, Brookston; 22 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
One sister, six brothers and one grandson preceded him in death.
Services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Revs Daniel May and Larry Lynch officiating. Burial was in the Pretty Prairie Cemetery
in Battle Ground.
Ethel M. Sterrett
September 15, 1901 - October 19, 1988
Ethel Mae Oilar Sterrett, 87, Brookston, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 3:10 p.m. in Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette. She had been in failing health thepast 17 years and a patient at the nursing facility since August 1st.
She was born Sept. 15, 1901, in Battle Ground. She was married to Elva L. Sterrett, March 18, 1922 in Battle Ground. He survives.
Mrs. Sterrett was a member of Badger Grove Community Baptist Church.
Surviving with the husband are two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Stimmel of Monon and Mrs. Daisy. Stoker, Roachdale; two sons, James Sterrett, Macy, Ind. and Robert B. Sterrett, Chalmers.
Also two brothers, Warren "Jack" Oilar, Brookston and Asa Eugene "Jiggs" Oilar, Chalmers; and four sisters, Mrs. Merle Overly of West Lafayette, Mrs. Lela Sewell, Kokomo, Mrs. Bessie Hague, Brookston and Mrs. Pauline Jewett, New Milford, Conn. Fifteen grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren survive. Preceded in death by 3 sisters and one brother.
Service was in Hartzler Chapel Brookston, Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment was in Pretty Prairie Cemetery.
