Iva (Kesler) Swinehart
February 5, 1906 - February 21, 2001
Iva (Kesler) Swinehart, 95, of Tucson, Arizona died February 21, 2001 at the Mt. Visa Home, in Tuscon.
Memorial services were held March 17 in Arizona.
Surviving are a son, James (an executive with NBC at Kansas City) and a daughter Norma Jean Sullenger (an executive with the Lubbock Texas School System); three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews living in the White County, Indiana area and throughout the United States.
She celebrated her 95th birthday on February 5, 2001. She was the last living child of 14 born to Sarah and William Kesler on a farm west of Monon Her siblings were Ivan, Harry, Harney, William, Arley, Sylvester, Lonnie, Benjamin, Irene, Daisy, Goldia Smith, Sylvia McDuffey and Emma Banes.
Velma W. Swink
August 31, 1904 - June 18, 1998
Velma W. Haynes Swink, 93, 3919 Prange Dr., Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, died Thursday; June 18, at 5:15 p.m. at her daughter's home. She had been in failing health for several years. She was born Aug. 31, 1904, to Edward and Mary Frances Jarrett Haynes, in Hardinsburg, Ky. She was married Feb. 3,1923, to Joe Swink, in Lodiburg, Ky. and he died Oct. 8, 1969.
She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband west of Brookston for 25 years.
They moved in 1963 to Brookston, and in 1986 she went to live with her daughter, Marjorie.
She was a member of the Brookston United Methodist Church.
She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Crystal Chapter 165 Monticello, and past Worthy Matron of the former Brookston OES. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Brookston and the White County Farm Bureau.
Survivors are two daughters, Marjorie VanSchepen, Lafayette and Dr. Mary Jo Henderson, Parkland, Florida; two sons, David, Lafayette and Donald, Orange Park, Florida; a sister, Nellie Flowers, Lafayette; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Funeral services were Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Mark T. Kurowski officiating.
An Eastern Star Memorial service by the Crystal Chapter 165 was held.
Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lafayette.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Meta Lenz Sword
November 25, 1913 - June 10, 1991
Meta Lenz Sword, 77, R.1, Brookston, died Monday, June 10, at her home.
She was born Nov. 25, 1913, to Herman Conrad and Meta C. Pleuss Lenz, in Hoboken, N.J.
She was married Feb. 29, 1956 to Edward Carl Sword, in Hoboken, N.J. He survives.
She moved from Bethlehem, Pa., to Brookston, in 1964.
She was a secretary for the West Lafayette School system superintendent's office for 18 years and retired in December 1982.
She was a member of St. Mathew's Lutheran Church, Hoboken, N.J. She was also a member of Professional Secretaries International and the National Rifle Association.
Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Julia Brueckner, Ridgefield, N.J.
There was no funeral or visitation. An inurnment was conducted at Brookston IOOF Cemetery.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston was in charge of the arrangements.
Elizabeth Agnes Taggart
June 12, 1907 - September 28, 1989
Elizabeth Agnes Freese Taggart, 82, R.R.1, Reynolds, died Friday, September 28, in her home.
She was born June 12, 1907, to Lewis and Stella Freese, in Edinburg, Ind. She was married Nov. 15, 1925, to Ivan Taggart in Edinburg. Hedied February 28, 1983.
She was a homemaker and worked at Purdue, before retiring in 1974.
She formerly lived in Frankfort and Lafayette, but had lived at R. 1, Reynolds for the last 14 years.
Survivors include a son. William, R.1, Reynolds; a brother; four sisters, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A brother is deceased.
Graveside rites were Wednesday at Riverview Cemetery, Monticello, with Father Robert Fosselman officiating.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of the service.
Edith S. Talbert
May 28, 1924 - April 24, 1992
Edith Sanford Talbert, 67, of Brookston was dead on arrival, Friday, April 24, at 12:59 p.m. in St.. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born May 28, 1924, to Charles and Mamie Hurst Sanford, in Claiborne County, Tennessee.
She lived in Chalmers and Brookston areas for 30 years after moving from New Tazewell, Tennessee.
She was a qualified medical assistant and worked at the Indiana Veterans Home from 1968-89, when she retired. She later worked there part time.
She was a member of Battle Ground Bible Church..
Survivors include a brother, Edward Sanford of Gulf Breeze, Florida; and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Minton, Hammond and Mrs. Barbara McClain, Aurora, Colorado. A brother is deceased.
The funeral was Monday, at Battle Ground Bible Church, with Pastor Chester Martin officiating.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Indiana Veterans Home.
Lawrence E. 'Pete' Taylor
September 25, 1911 - February 26, 1992
Lawrence E. "Pete" Taylor, 80, Brookston, died Feb. 26, in Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette.
He was born Sept. 25, 1911, to Harry and Golda Hague Taylor, in White County. He was married Aug. 24, 1933, to Vera LaDean Hall, in Battle Ground and she survives.
He moved to Brookston, from the Badger Grove area, 30 years ago.
He was a former employee at Alcoa, Lafayette, until he retired in 1974 after 26 years.
He was a member of the. Brookston United Methodist Church, Frontier Senior Citizens Club and Brookston IOOF Lodge No. 164.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Ed, Brookston, two daughters, Phyllis Haase, Americus and Nancy Brattian, Martinsville; a sister, Ruth Yoder, Morocco; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One sister is deceased.
The funeral was Friday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Gene Ansell officiating.
Burial was in Brookston IOOF Cemetery.
Ben R. Teel
June 30, 1894 - October 2, 1989
Ben R. Teel, 95, R.R. 2 Brookston, died Monday, Oct. 2, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient for a week.
He was born June 30, 1894, to Jefferson and Alie Sink Teel, in Boone Mill, Virginia. He was married Oct. 11, 1924, to Huldah Schneib, in Michigan. She survives.
He lived at R.2, Brookston, after moving from the Camden Logansport area, in 1948. He was a retired farmer..
Other survivors are two sons, Benny and Robert, R.2, Brookston; a brother, Terry, Litton; a sister, Mrs. Sudie Sharp, Lafayette; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Six brothers, a sister and a granddaughter are deceased.
The funeral was conducted at 10 a.m. today at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Shuman and the Rev. Jeff Messer officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
William Birdell Telfer
July 18, 1910 - October 16, 1995
William Birdell Telfer, 85, 618 S. 9th St., Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, died at his home Monday, Oct. 16, at 11:30 p.m.
He was born July 18, 1910 in Brookston to Robert Telfer and Estelle Statton Telfer. He married Dorothy Hayes on November 12, 1929 in Brookston and she died May 19, 1983.
He graduated from Brookston High School in 1928 and attended Purdue University.
He retired from the Civil Engineering lab at Purdue University in 1975.
He moved from Brookston to Attica where he lived from 1947-62 before moving to Lafayette.
He was a Charter member of the Tippecanotes (Barbershop) Lafayette Chapter SPEBSQSA, and a member of the Tippy Canoe Campers Club.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Lewis H. (Patricia) Blanchard and Mrs. Aleta Brown both of Lafayette; 1 brother, Statton Telfer of Wolcott; 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren
Four brothers. Robert, Virgil, J. Howard and Ralph Telfer are deceased.
The funeral service was at 11.00 a.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
