Grace L. Turner

March 19, 1901 to March 4, 1988
Grace L. Turner, 88, Brookston, died Friday, March 4, at 11:02 am. in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She had been a patient there since Wednesday.

Mrs. Turner worked in the maintenance department at Ross Gear in Lafayette for 10 years, retiring in 1968.

Born March 19, 1901, in Goodland, she had lived in the Lafayette and Brookston areas since 1938. She had been living at Flora Brethren Home since Feb. 12. She married Archie Turner, April 10, 1918, in Goodland. He died Aug. 22, 1954.

Mrs. Turner was a member of Brookston Federated Church and Philathea Sunday School class.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Deweese, Brookston; and one son, Howard Turner, Flora. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren. A brother, 1 sister preceded in death

Service was in Brookston Federated Church at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Duncan MacNab officiating. Interment Goodland Cemetery.

Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of the service.

Alice E. Utley

December 22, 1903 to March 18, 1998
Alice E. Bowles Utley, 94, Brookston died Wednesday, March 18, 1998 at Lafayette Home Hospital. She had been a patient there for one day.

She was born in Otterbein on December 22, 1903, to Warren and Laura Arnold Bowles. She married Theodore "Ted" Utley in Indianapolis on October 14, 1930. He died August 17, 1965.

She was a 1922 graduate of Otterbein High School and attended Greenville (Ill.) College for one year.

She served as Brookston Town Clerk for four terms (16 years) and retired in 1975. Her husband was a barber in Brookston for 40 years.

She was a member of the Brookston Federated Church.

She was a 65 year member of Prairie Extension Homemakers. She was also a member of Frontier and Twin Lakes Senior Citizens and a member of OES Monticello Crystal Chapter 165.

She is survived by a daughter-in- law, Lila Utley of Brookston; four grandchildren: two step-grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.

A son, a brother and a sister are deceased.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. Lelan McReynolds and Rev. B. James Walter officiating. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be made to the Federated Church Organ Fund.

Wayne A. Utley

December 26, 1934 to July 8, 1997
Wayne A. Utley, 62, Brookston, died Tuesday, July 8 at 5:45 p.m. at home.

He was born Dec. 26, 1934, to Theodore S. and Alice Bowles Utley, in Lafayette. His mother survives, and lives in Brookston.

His first marriage was to Mary Drake, in 1958. His second marriage was June 1981, to Lila A. Lovan, in Brookston.

He was a 1953 Brookston High School graduate.

He was lead singer, played the dobro and guitar with the Moots Creek Valley Boys, a musical group formed during their high school years at Brookston.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1, 1955, through March 1, 1985. He was a Captain with the 3414th Instructor Squadron (ATC) at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.

He was employed at Reifers, Prudential Insurance, Montgomery Ward, the former Hometown Federal, Valley Federal Savings Bank and the Bruce Harmon State Farm Insurance Agency.

He was a member of the Brookston Federated Church.

He was a member of Brookston American Legion Post No. 251, a past president and treasurer of the former Brookston Optimist Club and a member of the Brookston Lions Club.

Surviving with the wife are a son, Ted P. of Brownsburg; three daughters, Mrs. Joe (Peggy L.) Spencer of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; Penny L. Davis of Brookston and Mrs. Kurt (Alicia L.) Parrish of Lafayette; a stepson, David Fathman of Holland, Mich.; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ty (Carolyn) Cooper, Lafayette; and eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at 10 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating.

Burial, with military rites performed by the American Legion, will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to the Brookston Federated Church or the Visiting Nurse Hospice, Lafayette.

Byron Vanderbilt

1906 to June 20, 1991
Byron M. Vanderbilt, 85, Green Valley, Arizona, died Thursday, June 20, in Arizona, after a stroke.

Mr. Vanderbilt was born 1906, in Brookston and was married in 1934, to Elizabeth Hanawalt, in Evanston, Ill. She survives.

In 1929 he attended Indiana University, where he received a bachelor's degree. Later he got his master's degree and a doctorate in chemistry from Purdue.

Mr. Vanderbilt worked in Chicago Heights, Ill., for the Victor Chemical Co. and in Terre Haute for Commercial Solvents. He began working in 1938, for the Esso Research and Engineering Co. which later became Exxon Corp. He retired in 1968.

He wrote two books, "Thomas Edison, Chemist" and "Inventing: How the Masters Did It." Also he produced 100 inventions in the chemical field.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity and the American Chemical Society.

Others surviving are a son, Dean Vanderbilt, Dallas; a daughter, Carol Brown, Bloomington, IN; and a brother, Robert Vanderbilt, Lafayette.

Burial was in Evanston, Illinois.

Ruth Ann Van Liew

August 15, 1952 - June 27, 2001
Ruth Ann Van Liew, 48, Monon, died June 27 at her home.

She was born Aug. 15, 1952, to Denny J. and Anna Mildred Moore Hartwell, in South Charleston, West Virginia.

She was a resident of Monon for 14 years and had also lived in Lafayette and Thayer.

She was a machine operator at Dwyer Instruments in Wolcott for 13 years.

She graduated from Ivy Tech as a legal secretary. She was a member of the Fellowship of Living Hope.

She is survived by sons, Donald Van Liew of Vincennes, Dan Van Liew of Elkhart and John (friend — Janey) Van Liew of Lafayette; daughters, Donna (Joseph) Musenbrock of Boswell and Ann (Jeff) Cobb of Remington; grandchildren, Bryce, Brent, Bradley and Breann Cobb of Remington; brothers, Walt (Lois) Hartwell of Brook, Dan Hartwell of Charleston, W.Va.; Charlie (Sharon) Hartwell, Monon, Paul (Denise) Hartwell, Rensselaer and Roger Hartwell, San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Judy (Jim) Taylor, Remington; Brenda (Dave) Robling, Reynolds; Debbie (Rob) Long, Reynolds; Rose Hartwell, Reynolds; Joni (Don) Fritz, Atlanta, Ga.; Jane Myers, Remington; and Cathy Whicker, Monon.

Her father and mother are deceased.

Services were held at the Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer, Monday, with the Rev. Ed Bontreger officiating.

Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Morocco.

Jess Van Meter

October 5, 1903 to January 1, 1988
Jess Van Meter, 84, formerly of Brookston, died Jan. 1, 1988, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

He was born Oct. 5, 1903 and married Alma Deckard who is deceased.

He used to operate a rough lumber yard in Brookston and did construction work and bought and sold livestock.

Surviving are three step-children, Audrey Deckard Wilson of Elizabethtown, Ky., Esther Deckard May of West Lafayette and Roscoe Deckard of Brookston.

Services were held Jan. 4 at the Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, Ky.

Burial was in the Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.

John C. VanMeter

March 29, 1916 to November 4, 1990
John C. VanMeter, 74, R.3, Monticello, died Sunday, Nov. 4, in Tioga Pines Living Center. He had been in ill health for three months and seriously ill for two months.

He was born March 29, 1916, to Arthur and Maybelle Bonebrake VanMeter, in Columbus. He was married April 10,1942, to Ruth W. Bothner, in Washington, D.C. She survives.

Coming to Monticello from Kent, Washington, he had lived on Kean's Bay, Lake Shafer for the past nine years.

He was on the Army Medical Staff during World War II in France and England.

He was a biochemist with Lederle Laboratories and was also employed with the Newcastle State Hospital.

Surviving with the wife are three sons: Erick, Brookston; Arthur 0., Fairfax, Va.; and George, Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Lora E.) Askinazi, Sudbury, Mass. and Mrs. Donald (Elsie) VanMeter-Pint, Lansing, Ill; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date. The body will be cremated.

Miller-Voorhis Funeral Home, Monticello, is in charge of the service.

Mary Jean 'Rusty' VanMeter

January 18, 1929 to January 29, 1993
Mary Jean "Rusty" VanMeter, 64, R.5, Monticello, died unexpectedly, Friday morning, Jan. 29, in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette.

She was born Jan. 18, 1929, to John and Maude Temple Pearson, in Carroll County. She was married July 24, 1949, to Marion H. "Butch" VanMeter, in Wolcott. He died Jan. 11, 1983.

She graduated from Wolcott High School, in 1947, and had lived in White and Carroll counties all her life.

She was a member of the Chalmers Community Church and a Contact-HELP volunteer.

Surviving are a son, Terry J. of Muncie; two daughters; Lorraine K, West Lafayette and Mrs. Martin (Rebecca) Cotterman, Lafayette; one brother, Ralph Pearson, of Gulf Breeze, FL.; three sisters; Opal Collins, Idaville; Betty Taskey and Wilma Roehl, both of Monticello; and eight grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased.

The funeral was Monday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with the Rev. Loren A. Schuman officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association and Chalmers Community Church.
