Paul D. Yoder

November 4, 1926 - April 18, 2003
Paul Devon Yoder, 76, Brookston, died Friday, April 18, at 4:05 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.

He was born November 4, 1926, in Goshen to Paul and Olive Kalb Yoder. He married Maxine Wagner, June 20, 1948, in St. James Lutheran Church, Reynolds. She survives.

He was a 1944 graduate of Brookston High School and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, who served in the Philippines.

He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Delphi and retired in 1989. He moved from Delphi to Brookston in 1989.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Monticello, where he was an elder.

He was a former member of the Delphi American Legion and a former member of the Delphi Lions Club.

Surviving with his wife are sons Gary (Ginny) Yoder of Flora; Dan (Susan) Yoder of Indianapolis and Rick (Connie) Yoder of Brookston; daughter, Diana (Lester) Klopenstein of Rockfield; brothers, Donald (Lois) Yoder of Brookston, Dean (Lu) Yoder of Kokomo, Dane (Beatrice) Yoder of Dayton and Denny (Betty) Yoder of Sacramento, Calif; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A sister, Eloise Lucas is deceased.

Services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Monticello with Pastor William Parsons officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Monticello.

Susan K. Younger

November 1, 1952 - March 8, 2002
Susan K. Younger, 49, of Butlerville and formerly of Monon, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon, IN.

She was a resident of the Muscatatuck State Development Center at Butlerville, IN.

She was born November 1, 1952, in Indianapolis. Her father was Robert D. Younger. Her mother was Ilene (Qualkenbush) Younger of Greenwood, IN. Survivors include one sister, Karen Ferguson of Greenwood, In. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert D. Younger in 2000, and her grandmother Opal Qualkenbush.

Reverend Ralph Hill conducted a service on Monday, March 11, 2002 at King Solomon Chapel at Washington Park North Cemetery in Indianapolis. Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel in Greenwood handled the arrangements. Entombment was at Washington Park North Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Hubert S. Young

September 6, 1907 to November 9, 2000
Hubert S. Young, 93, a former Brookston resident, died Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9:25 a.m. in St. Mary Healthcare, Lafayette.

He was born Sept. 6, 1907, to Grant and Isola Hart Young, in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was married Sept. 2, 1927, to Josephine Nelson and she died Feb. 5, 2000.

He had lived in Lafayette since October 1960. He attended Round Grove and Brookston Schools.

He was a farmer and retired from the custodian physical plant at Purdue, after 13 years.

He was a member of Congress Street United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, Philip F. Young, Lafayette; daughters, Marian Moelhman, Lafayette and Martha (Chuck) Weiderhaft of Boulder City, Nevada; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Two brothers and three sisters are deceased.

Funeral service was Monday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with pastors Larry Dimick and Glen Hulbert officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to the Congress Street United Methodist Church.

James E. Young

November 11, 1923 to October 6, 1997
James E. Young, 74, of Brookston died Monday, October 6 at 6:44 p.m. in Home Hospital, Lafayette.

He was born November 11, 1923 in Round Grove Township to Grant and Isola Hart Young. He had lived in Brookston for the past 50 years. He graduated from Round Grove High School in 1941.

He married Rosemary Allie on November 22, 1941 in Delphi. She survives along with 3 daughters; Mrs. Jerry (Sharon) Hiner, Brookston, Vickie Richardson, Lafayette, Mrs. Mick (Debra) Mikels of Brookston; and a son, Stan Young of Brookston.

One brother Hubert Young of Lafayette also survives. He had 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Connie Weston, one great-granddaughter, Nicole, 3 sisters and a brother are deceased.

He served in the Army in World War II in Japan. He had worked at Alcoa from 1941 to 1952 and was an engineer with the Monon, L&N, Seaboard and CSX railroads for 31½ years before retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Brookston United Methodist Church, Monticello Moose Lodge, Libanus Lodge 154 F&AM, Monticello, Brookston IOOF Lodge 164, a life member of the VFW post in Michigan City and a life member of Post 11 Lafayette American Legion.

Funeral services will be at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston at 11:00 a.m. on Friday with burial in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Friends may call at Hartzler Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Brookston United Methodist Church or American Cancer Society.

Josephine Young

February 22, 1908 to February 5, 2000
Josephine Nelson Young, 91, Lafayette, a former Brookston resident, died Saturday. Feb. 5, at St. Mary Healthcare Center, Lafayette.

She was born Feb. 22, 1908, to Joseph and Nellie Shigley Nelson in Brookston. She was married Sept. 2, 1927, to Hubert S. Young, in Monticello. He survives.

She graduated in 1925, from the Brookston High School and attended Lafayette Business College.

She worked at Hughes Produce and Watson Grocery in Brookston.

She also worked at Purdue in the payroll department. She retired in 1975.

She was a member of Congress Street United Methodist Church, Lafayette, where she was a former organist.

She was a member of the Night Unto Day Circle and Society.

She is survived by her husband, of St. Mary Healthcare Center; a son, Philip E. Young, Lafayette; daughters, Martha (Church) Weiderhaft, Boulder City, Nev. and Marian Moelhman, Lafayette; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Two brothers and four sisters are deceased.

Funeral service was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Larry Dimick and the Rev. Glen Hulbert officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Memorials may be given to Congress Street United Methodist Church.

Katherine J. Young

June 1, 1901 to September 4, 1994
Katherine J. Hart Young, 93, 920 S. 15th St., Lafayette, died Sunday, Sept. 4 in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center where she had been a patient since Aug. 28.

She was born June 1, 1901 in Pittsburg. She lived in Benton County at Route 3, Fowler before moving to Lafayette in 1968. She graduated from Brookston Academy and attended Valparaiso Normal School.

She married Hanson Young, Dec. 31, 1923 in Valparaiso. He died Sept. 29. 1953.

She taught school in White County for three years and helped her husband operate a farm. She also was a homemaker.

Surviving are three sons. Robert of Oxford, Herbert of Rt. 2 Brookston, and John of Scottsburg: 15 grandchildren. 32 great grandchildren. 11 great-great grandchildren and a daughter-in-law Colleen Young of Brookston.

She was preceded in death by a son. Kenneth, 2 grandsons, Randall and Blaine Young, a brother and a sister.

Services were Sept. 7 at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, Pastor Jean Brindel officiated.

Interment was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Dr. Larry Dale Young

September 13, 1950 to March 3, 1997
Dr. Larry Dale Young, 46, 839 N. Lexington, Hastings, Nebraska, formerly of Brookston, died Monday, Mar. 3, at his home. .

He was born September 13, 1950 in Lafayette, IN to Herbert and Florence Mills Young. He married Deborah Cook on January 29, 1972 and she survives.

He graduated from Frontier High School in 1968. He attended Purdue University and received his Masters and PhD from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. He did his Post Doctorate at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In March 1976 he was employed at MARC as a research geneticist. He was active in National Swine Improvement Federation since 1977 and served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of American Society of Animal Science and the Council for Agriculture Science and Technology. He served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Animal Science during 1988-1991 and Sheep Journal since 1985. He was a member of Industry Liason Committee for ASAS from 1984-1986. He was currently serving as an Adjutant Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, and Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi Fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters Sarah and Amanda Young and son Adam all at home; his parents Herbert and Florence Young of Rt. 2, Brookston; a brother Dave Young of West Lafayette; and a sister Mrs. Jim Griner of New Part Richey, FL.

Two brothers, Randy and Steve Young, are deceased.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Friends may call at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, on Friday from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi with Father Peter Vanderkolk and David Bourek officiating Burial will be in IOOF Brookston Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Larry Young Memorial Fund.

Melvin A. Young Jr.

January 23, 1917 to August 18, 1995
Melvin A. Young Jr., 78, formerly of 219 N. Prairie St., Brookston, died Friday, Aug. 18, at 7:40 p.m. at Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette. He had been a resident of Heritage Healthcare since January.

He was born Jan. 23, 1917, to Melvin and Mary Young Sr., in Flint, Mich. He was married Oct. 1, 1983, to Jean Bever Silverthorn, in West Point. She survives.

Since 1981 he had lived in Brookston and had also lived at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette.

He graduated from Central High School in Flint, Mich., in 1935. He attended Butler University for two years and also attended several trade schools.

He was a retired truck driver. He was a pilot in the Army AirCorps during WW II. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 777.

Surviving with his wife are two sons; James of Flint, Mich. and Melvin of Millington, Mich; two daughters, Mrs. Matt (Ruth) Cassiday, Grand Blanc, Mich and Tressa Steiner, Flint, Mich.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A son, Robert, a brother and sister are deceased.

The funeral was Monday, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Cleo Ewing officiating.

Burial was in Green Bay Cemetery, Newtown.
