Stephen R. Young
November 26, 1953 to November 21, 1996
Stephen Robert Young, 42, Brookston, died Thursday, Nov. 21, in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette.
He was born Nov. 26, 1953, in Lafayette, to Herbert and Florence Mills Young, who survive.
He graduated from Frontier High School in 1972 and attended Purdue and Ivy Tech. He was married Aug. 14, 1976, to Roberta Beaty, in Kendallville, and she survives.
He farmed with his father on R.2, Brookston and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Lafayette.
Surviving with his wife and parents are two sons, Jason and Joel and a daughter, Daniel Young all at home; two brothers, Dave, West Lafayette and Larry, Hastings, Neb.; and a sister, Mrs. Jim (Kathy) Griner, new Port Richey, Florida. A brother, Randy is deceased.
Services were conducted Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, Lafayette, with Pastor Daniel May officiating.
Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Contributions may be given to the American Heart Association.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was charge of services.
Glen Youngstedt
July 12, 1921 - April 25, 2002
Glen Gordon Youngstedt, 80, of West Lafayette, the father of a Brookston resident, died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.
He was born July 12, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Gustavas Adolf and Hannah Westin Youngstedt. He married Lois Anderson on September 1, 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio. She died September 2, 1993.
He graduated from Boardman, Ohio High School and attended Aviation Technical School for two years.
He worked at Purdue University from 1964-86 in the carpenter shop, and was facility manager at Harrison Hall on the Purdue Campus.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lafayette; Masonic Lodge #123 F&AM, Lafayette where he was a Past Master. He received the Boilermaker Award for Outstanding Student Service from Purdue University.
He is survived by a son, Glenn (Diane) Youngstedt of Stevenson, Michigan; two daughters, Glenna Otis of Mt. View, California and Carolyn (Tom) Shultz of Brookston, and two sisters Dorothy (Chuck) Fike of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Judy (Doyle) McDermott of Crown Point, Ind. Eight grandchildren also survive.
A brother and four sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston on Monday with Rev. Peg Nowling officiating. Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Memorials may be made to the Purdue Foundation (Southwest Michigan Scholarship Fund).
Betty Marie Zarse
June 17, 1950 to March 12, 2000
Betty Marie Dodds Zarse, 49, of Chalmers, died Sunday, March 12, at White County Memorial Hospital. She was a victim of a house fire.
She was born June 17, 1950, to Edward M. and Evelyn Frances Smith Dodds, in Shelbyville. She was married August 24, 1968, to Leonard C. "Butch" Zarse Jr., in Greenwood. He survives.
She graduated from Center Grove High School in 1968.
She lived in the Chalmers community since 1968.
She worked at Payless Super Market in Lafayette for 10 years. She was presently employed as the assistant manager of the bakery at the new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Monticello.
She was a member of Brookston Federated Church.
She was Past Worthy Matron, OES, Brookston; past president of Psi Iota Xi sorority, Chi chapter; and a member of the Prairietts Home Demonstration Club.
Surviving with her husband are a son, Cory Zarse, Indianapolis; a daughter, Amy Zarse-Randoiph, Indianapolis; two brothers, Thomas E. Dodds, Indianapolis and Robert S. Dodds, West Lafayette; and a sister, Barb (Faye) Dodds Crowell, Spiceland.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am. Thursday at Brookston Federated Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.
Burial will be at Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Brookston Federated Church.
Sharon Rosa Melton
December 7, 1947 - June 5, 2003
Sharon Rosa Melton, 55, of Rensselaer, died Thursday, June 5, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born at Jasper County on December 7, 1947, to Herbert Jr. and Alice Louise Mitchell Melton.
She was a 1965 graduate of North White High School.
She was a life long resident of the Monon community and had lived in the Lee area.
She was employed at Bryan Manufacturing for five years and was employed at Northway Products in Rensselaer for 23 years.
She was a member of the former Lee United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge, Rensselaer.
Survivors include her mother, Alice Louise Mitchell Melton of Rensselaer; a brother, Herbert Jeffrey (Julia) Melton of Medaryville; sisters, Karen (Russell) Morris, Joan (Marvin) Jeffrey and Cathy (Robert) Walker, all of Rensselaer and her fiance, Raymond Anderson of Rensselaer.
Funeral services were Friday at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon with Pastor Tom Bennett and Pastor Russell Morris officiating.
Burial was in Milroy Cemetery, Rensselaer.
Helen L. Besse
February 8, 1912 - September 21, 2002
Helen L. Adwell Besse, 90 of Monticello died Saturday, September 21, 2002 at Home Hospital, Lafayette. She died during surgery for repair of a broken hip suffered earlier in the day.
She was born February 8, 1912 in Benton County to Harry and Harriet Steely Adwell. She married Louis 0. Besse on April 11, 1931, in Fowler. He died January 30, 1967.
She was a graduate of Pine Township High School.
She moved to Montice1lo from Brookston in 1972.
She was a homemaker, and a avid bridge player.
She was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church.
She was a former member of Psi Iota Xi sorority, Chi chapter, Brookston.
Surviving are daughters, Nancy (Robert) Foster and Susan (Joe) Raub both of Monticello; two sisters Wilma Adwell and Evel Halstead both of Tucson, Ariz., and three grandchildren.
A sister, Eva Franklin, is deceased.
Services were Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Lelan MeReynolds officiating.
Burial was in I.0.0.F. Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials may be made Brookston United Methodist Church.
Max E. Brown
August 26, 1920 - July 21, 2003
Max E. Brown, 82, of Monticello died Monday, July 21, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.
He was born August 26, 1920 in Newton County to Hollis D. and Leota Dirst Brown.
He married Viona J. Foulks on March 11, 1949, in Jasper County. She survives.
He was a 1938 graduate of Morgan Township High School in Porter County.
He had worked for 33 years as a purchasing agent for Bryan Manufacturing Company and five years as purchasing agent for Tru-Flight Arrow, both of Monticello. He retired from Tru-Flight in 1985.
He was a very active member of the Zion Bethel Church in Monticello.
He and his wife had wintered at Buttonwood Bay in Sebring, Florida for the past 18 years.
Other survivors include a son, Jerry L. (Cheryl) Brown of Floyds Knobs; a sister Doris (Lewis) Hoover of Rensselaer; four grandchildren.
Funeral services were at Zion Bethel Church on Thursday, July 24, 2003, with Rev. Jeff Messer officiating.
Burial was at Bedford Cemetery, Monon.
Steve Grubor
March 17, 1925 - February 8, 1991
Steve Grubor, 65, 1005 S. Prairie St., Brookston, was dead on arrival at 11:16 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. He had been in poor health since November.
He was born March 17, 1925, to Tony and Mary Kenezovich Grubor, in Terre Haute. He was married March 17, 1989, to Helen Barrett, in Brookston. She survives.
He moved from Terre Haute to Indiana Veterans Home, West Lafayette, and in 1989 to Brookston.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in Europe. In 1979 he retired from the A&P Tea Company. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 290 at Rosedale and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1154, Lafayette. He was an avid bowler. Surviving with his wife are two sons, Steven, Plainfield and David, Terre Haute; two stepsons, Floyd Shassere, Terre Haute and Jim Barrett, Brookston; four step daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Moran, Bonita Springs, Fla., Mrs. Dick (Linda) Harner, Rt.5, Monticello; Mrs. Larry (Sue) Haines, North Vernon and Mrs. Rick (Ruth Ann) Weiderhaft, West Lafayette; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Euriga and Mrs. Betty Gottardi, both of Terre Haute; and 19 grandchildren.
The funeral was Monday in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Steven Agal officiating.
military graveside rites were conducted at Brookston IOOF Cemetery.
Mable Heiny
May 26, 1907 - March 14, 1993
Mable Heiny, 85, formerly of Monticello, died Sunday, March 14, in Milner Community Healthcare Center, Rossville. She had been in failing health for two years.
She was born May 26,1907, to Alva and Effie Tam Hunt, in White County. She was married Feb. 17, 1926, to Merle J. Heiny, in White County, and he died Feb. 11, 1979.
She had lived in Monticello since 1977, moving there from a farm north of Idaville, where she had lived for 53 years.
She was a member of Pious Chapel Church near Idaville.
Surviving is a son, Donald D. Heiny, Kokomo; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald R (Patsy A.) Schmierer, Brookston; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven great grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Wednesday at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, State Sen. Steven Johnson officiating.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.
