James E. Morehouse

December 23, 1937 - February 20, 1993
James E. Morehouse, 55, West Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 20, at his home.

He was born Dec. 23, 1937, to Lawrence M. and Josephine Martin Morehouse, in Tippecanoe County. His mother is at Heritage Healthcare in West Lafayette. He was married to Mary Kerr, and she died April 7, 1984. He then married Mary Burns Swisher, on Dec 31, 1990, and she survives.

He owned and operated the Morehouse Body Shop in Brookston, from 1971-1989.

Surviving with his wife and mother are two sons: Steve of Battle Ground and Mike of Brookston; two sisters, Mrs. Michael (Theresa) Brown and Mrs. Cory (Cheryl) Weston, both of Lafayette; two stepdaughters; Mrs. Cindy Cox, Buck Creek and Mrs. Tina Sanders, West Lafayette; a stepson, Tim Swisher, Owensboro, Ky.; three brothers; William of Stockton, Calif.; Richard, Battle Ground and George, Lafayette; seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

The funeral was Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Bill Murdock officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in Brookston.

Albert W. Newberry

October 19, 1931 - July 18, 2003
Albert W. "Wally" Newberry, 71, of Brookston, died Friday, July 18, at 2:30 a.m. at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born, October 19, 1931, in Barren County, Kentucky. He was married June 27, 1959, to Linda J. King in Lafayette, and she survives.

He worked for Peerless Wire Goods Co. for 23 years and then for Alcoa, where he later retired. After retirement he worked as a driver for Bartlett Ford for three years.

He was a member of the American Legion of Chalmers.

He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and he liked to fish, travel and ride his snowmobile.

Other survivors include a son, Steven W. Newberry, Brookston; a daughter, Tracy E. (Fred) Peters, Brookston; a brother, Stanley (Barb) Newberry, Monticello and a sister, Linda (Don) Smith, Lafayette; four grandchildren.

A brother, Marvin Newberry, preceded him in death.

Graveside services were Monday, July 21, at the Brookston IOOF Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds officiating. Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Edward Lee Patterson

November 5, 1928 - April 12, 2002
Edward Lee Patterson, 73, of West Lafayette and formerly of Chalmers died Friday, April 12 at Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette.

He was born at Lafayette on November 5, 1928, to Richard and Gertha Hargis Patterson.

He graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette.

On December 31, 1955, he married Elizabeth May Evans in Lafayette. She died April 3, 1994.

He was a former owner of Patterson Farmhouse Restaurant in Brookston from 1989 until 1994.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until 1955 with the Test Squadron 6570 Ordinance as an airplane mechanic, Staff/Sgt.

He was a member of the Country Lane Baptist Church.

Other survivors include daughters Valerie (Steve) Fessler of Sedona, Arizona; Lisa (Randy) Skidmore of Lafayette; Shawna (Jason) Meyers of West Lafayette; a son, Randy (Carla) Patterson of Mesa, Arizona; brother, Clifford Patterson of Lafayette; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

His brother John Patterson preceded him in death.

Funeral services were today at Hartzler Funeral Home with Randy Skidmore officiating.

Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery in Brookston. Memorials ma made to the Indiana Veterans Home.

Robert E. Vanderbilt

April 17, 1914 to October 28, 1994
Robert E. Vanderbilt, 80, West Lafayette, died Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:22 a.m. at Home Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient since Sept. 25.

He was born April 17, 1914, to Byron and Anna Kassabaum Vanderbilt, in Brookston and he never married.

He graduated in 1931, from Brookston High School.

He retired in 1980, from Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Co., Lafayette.

He was a member of the John Purdue Club.

Surviving is a brother-in-law, Chester May, Brookston; four nieces and four nephews. Two sisters and three brothers are deceased.

The funeral was conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Loren Shuman officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Jerry Alan Pals

September 4, 1958 - October 28, 1988
Jerry Alan Pals, 44, of Monon died Thursday, June 19, 2003.

He was born in Harvey, Ill., on September 4, 1958, to Marvin E. and Myrna Tiltges Pals. He married Christine Shide in Rensselaer on October 28, 1988. She survives.

He attended Thornton High School.

He served as a UPS supervisor for 12 years, then was a self-employed truck driver for 5 years.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Other survivors include his father, Marvin E. (Ruth) Pals of DeMotte, mother Myrna (Bill) Hall, of Las Vegas, Nev., daughters Abigail and Katlyn Pals, of Monon; brothers, Steve (Julie) Pals of South Holland, Ill., and Kenny (Dawn) Pals; sisters, Marla (Mike) Gregory of Monticello and Lori (Kevin) Strayn, of Las Vegas, Nev., step-brothers, Wade (Amy) Zeilenga of Allendale, Mich., and Tim Zeilenga; and a step-sister, Tammy (Stan) Kalwitter, of Joliet, Ill.

Funeral services were Monday at Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer with Rev. Leonard Kostka officiating.

Interment was at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Martha A. Ward

September 8, 1908 to May 25, 1987
Martha A. Knapp Ward, 80, Brookston, died 9:25 a.m. Monday in St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, Delphi.

Born Sept. 8, 1908, in Cass County, she had lived in Brookston since 1938 and moved to the healthcare center May 6. She was a 1923 graduate of Lucerne High School.

Mrs. Ward was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi; Altar and Rosary Society; Brookston American Legion Auxiliary; and the former Get Together Club.

She was married July 7, 1926 to Albert Lee Ward, in Kewanna. He died April 24, 1865.

Surviving are three sons: Richard, John and Dale Ward, all of Brookston; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Mary) Guiffre of Detroit, Mich.; one brother, Thomas Knapp of Logansport; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Basser of Logansport and Mrs. Esther Sprinkle of Walton, Indiana.

Also surviving are 23 grand children, 18 great grandchildren. One son and a grandson preceded in death.

Services were 10 a.m. this morning in St Joseph Catholic Church, Delphi, with Father Donald Hardebeck officiating. Interment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette. Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of services.

Robert E. Ward

January 17, 1910 to September 15, 1999
Robert E. Ward, 89, formerly of Monticello, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Twin Lakes Village, Monticello, where he had resided since August 1996.

He was born Jan. 17, 1910, to Silas and Blanche Brewer Ward, in Delphi. He was married May 1, 1933, to Louise H. Klinkhammer in Rensselaer. She died May 4, 1998.

He had lived in Monticello since April 1992, moving there from the Wolcott area, where he lived from 1957-92.

He retired from farming in 1970. He worked for the Tri-County School Corp. from 1970-75.

He was a member of Wolcott Baptist Church.

Surviving are six sons, Robert Jr., Donald and Joe, all of Monticello; Charles of Monon, Fred of Chalmers and Rick of Leyden, Mass.; three daughters, Mrs. Dick (Ella) Bulington of Kentland, Mrs. Robert (Judy) Waymouth of Walton and Mrs. Ed (Joan) Mitchell of Monticello; a brother, Charles of Texas; 23 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; nine step grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild.

A son, John, four brothers, three sisters and a great grandchild are deceased.

Funeral services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.

Burial was in Meadow Lake Cemetery, south of Wolcott.

Memorials may be given to the Council on Aging.

Harold S. 'Hal' Wargo

December 20, 1919 to January 4, 2000
Harold S. "Hal" Wargo, 80, of Knox, the father of local residents, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 20, 1919, to Stephen and Agnes Kubeck Wargo, in Whiting. He was married Dec. 23, 1943, to Vera Mae Ehrenhardt in Whiting. She died Dec. 17,1995.

He was a graduate of Clark High School and Northwestern University.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a First Lieutenant in Manila.

He was chief state ranger for the Catholic Foresters Insurance for the past eight years.

He had served as a police officer for the City of Hammond and then was employed for 32 years at the Ford Motor Co. Assembly Plant in Chicago, in industrial relations until his retirement in 1978. He was also the financial manager of the Chicago Auto Employee Credit Union.

He was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Knox.

He was an avid Ford car enthusiast and baseball fan and an accomplished violinist.

He was a member of Knox VFW Post No. 141.

He is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Larry) Redlin, Monon; a son, Stephen Wargo, Delphi and seven grandchildren.

A brother, Robert V. Wargo; a grandson Benjamin; and a great grandson, Peyton Briar, are deceased.

A funeral mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Knox.

M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox was in charge.

Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox.

Memorials may be given to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
